the queen’s gambit where everything is the same except beth keeps in contact with mr. shaibel. she sends him the $10 after winning her first tournament and regularly writes him about her matches and how she gets to skip school to play chess. he tells her he saw her in the chess magazine and to keep practicing the sicilian. one day, as he’s cutting out one of her newspaper clippings, he tears up when he sees that she mentioned him in one of her interviews and said, “mr. shaibel is a fine chess player who taught me chess in the basement”. he pins it right next to the photo of them and is so proud that she kept playing. she manages to surprise visit him at the orphanage once before he passes away and catches him playing by himself. they play a game for old times sake (“wanna play?” he stares at her in shock, because it’s been years since they’ve seen each other, before she says “it’s now or never”). later on, when she becomes a world renowned chess player, he tells everyone he knows that she started playing chess right there in the janitor’s basement.
