Humble beginnings don't always constitute a simple life, and it was only grace which carried Ivan Sokolov through his. Born into poverty, he rose out of the snow caked fields of Kasimov to the snow strewn streets of St. Petersburg, young and handsome, with his heart on his sleeve and his hope in his heart. Earning a living at the feet of others, his humility was the cloak upon his back, his sweet face and honest hands the resume which brought him to the Mariinsky Ballet, a realization that was more dream than reality. It was beautiful; the dancers and the ballet, the stories and the way that lovely things died. But the death of true beauty was a terrible thing, and hit twice by two very different tragedies, it was a wonder that he stayed in his feet. One has found him and the other haunts him, but with his suits and ties, such borrowed wealth for a temporary crime, it’s difficult to place the sadness in his gaze and blame it upon any one thing. One look, and it’s almost feasible that this golden-haired stranger with the kind hands and soft voice is reminiscing not upon devastation, but exuberance. Ah, but dorogaya --- that is why he is a conman.

That was supposed to be the end, one life for another...but Carmela Capecchi didn't play by the rules, and Reina found herself across the sea, working not for herself, but for her family. It began with Charlotte, disassembling her perfect life and crushing it to pieces...and now that she's developed an appetite for omnipotence, she wants more than simple vengeance with the man who hurt her most. No, she won't merely tear him down. She'll tear him, and his precious society, apart.

The quieter of the Mallory-Hayes pair, Milo was named by his mother, a tribute to the world that she had left behind when she married into the American dream. Rosie was brass, fun, excitement personified, but he was responsibility, reason, compassion which smoothed out the Texan drawl and the dusty Southern luxury. Football star in the States, rugby wonder in the motherland; jock and gentleman, but more of the latter than the former. He was always pressed into keeping up appearances, always for the campaign, the stardom: but what became of family when it mattered most? Their parents may have fled into the wind at the first sight of devastation, but this boy,with his pride and honor, self-deprecation and confidence -- all those paradoxes...he never left. He stayed to pick up the pieces, and the two of them beat on towards some unknown future. When they donned their wings, she was a bird of paradise while he allowed them to turn him into a raven of the night, undressing for the rich and kissing the heist on its red, lovely mouth. There's a certain level of humility, of loss, that must occur before morality flees and only one thought remains: survive, Milo. Survive.  

Raised between the American South and the British Isles, Rosie Mallory-Hayes' life was always a dichotomy of pushes and pulls, but then again, she was a girl who loved working against the status quo. Brash and bold, a pop of color in any landscape; she was the giggle at the funeral, the Southern belle living in the phrase "go big or go home". Pageant queen, national sweetheart, daughter to politician and his picturesque wife, she believed that her adolescent euphoria would last forever. Why wouldn't it? Pretty, young, and free, the most popular girl in any circumstance, her bright skirts and pale thighs teasing the best of them. It was all dandy. But she didn't know what blackmail was, or bankruptcy, and when her beloved parents pulled the biggest con of their lives and disappeared from existence, she and Milo were left alone to fend for themselves in a world where nothing came without a price. Riches to rags, she's pretending that everything is still dandy, that she doesn't miss her old self and how fearless she had been, how utterly naive. In truth, she's still naive. Refusing to believe that it's all over, laughing too loud and primping her hair up too high, still speaking with that Southern drawl, she might still be in Texas for all they know. One rule of becoming a good thief is to be able to relinquish your identity, but she’s t e r r i f i e d of who she’ll find if she lets her past self go.

While her brother had always been beloved and coveted by the world, Adelaide Rothschild seemed always to be marginalized, her sharp mouth and biting cynicism serving only to distance her from her peers. She was perpetually existing in a shadow: Xanthe's, Hale's -- and when beautiful things are left on the wayside, they begin to rot. It began slowly. It doesn't matter that everything that she ever tried to love has hurt her, does it? It doesn't matter that she's not savvy enough to be a burglar, and not pretty enough to be a distraction, does it? Ask her anything and she'll bite you hard enough to leave a mark...but don't take her for surface value. This girl has been rich all her life, but now it's time for her to shine. Someday soon, she'll find her ambition waiting for her, and they'll go to war together against all that has w r o n g e d her.
