Lana Turner’s Hat Collection on Display at Red Rooster in Harlem By Kristen Tauer
Lana Turner’s distinctive style has caught the eye of Marcus Samuelsson. Now she’s lending some of her fashion to the chef’s Red Rooster restaurant in Harlem, decorating the dining room according to her personal aesthetic. Her extensive hat collection was the starting point.
“It was Marcus, who has seen me over the years in hats and going into events,” Turner explained early one morning of the installation’s genesis. “He’s always like, ‘Oh my God, I love what you have on, I love that hat.’ And over that time he’d say ‘Oh, you know, I want to do something at the restaurant.'”
That inkling has come to fruition with her newly mounted installation. Turner, a life-long Harlem resident, estimates that she has over 500 hats in her personal collection, and around 40 were selected for the Red Rooster showcase.
Several curated installations are dispersed around the room, separated by theme: red and gold, orange, white, butterflies. The front wall includes several 3-D printed designs by Brooklyn milliner Heidi Lee; an accordion hat that looks like it was once perched atop Napoleon’s head; two formal designs by a Detroit-based milliner, and a hat that Turner herself created earlier this year for the Lunar New Year. She estimates that around one-third of the hats in her collection are vintage, and a few are sprinkled throughout the room: a topper worn by the late actress Ruby Dee hangs in the main dining room; a helmet-shaped design by Pierre Cardin is propped up next to the bar.
Turner can talk about the history and story of each item with an archivists’ precision, but she stressed that she’s not only a collector — she actually wears everything on display. And while hats are the central theme, they are accompanied by a menagerie of personal items — dresses, shoes, gloves, books, records, plates and photos — that represent her way of thinking.
“They just expected hats when they were asking about hats,” she explained. “I’m like, they don’t understand. This is my lifestyle, it’s not just clothes or just a bag or just a hat. Everything goes together.”
The showcase will be up through October, and Turner expects to rotate several items in and out. The restaurant will also feature imagery from the installation on promotional postcards dropped with restaurant checks.
“I’ve never been a fashion girl, ever. I’m still not a fashion girl,” Turner insists. “What I am is someone who understands her own style.” That day, she had come out to the restaurant donning a brocade jacket, white gloves and a pashmina, topping off the look with a vintage Sally Victor hat.
“I can be many people, and that’s the wonderful thing about hats.”

Teletrece H E I D I L E E, la diseñadora detrás de la máscara de Di Mondo
Vive en Nueva York y su fama se la ganó gracias a la creación del "Endless Echo Hat", nombre del accesorio que utilizó el fashionista en la gala de Viña 2016. Di Mondo sorprendió en la gala del Festival de Viña 2016, con un "tocado" hecho con 8.000 cristales y más de 200 horas de trabajo. Sin embargo, son pocos los que conocen a la persona encargada del diseño de ésta máscara. La diseñadora y artista coreana Heidi Lee confeccionó el "Endless Echo Hat", nombre de la creación que utilizó Di Mondo en la red carpet. Radicada en Brooklyn, Nueva York, Lee creó el "tocado" con su rostro multiplicado varias veces en una impresora 3D. Graduada de la Escuela de Diseño de Rhode Island (RISD), Heidi Lee ganó el premio el 2012 por Mejor Accesorio entregado por el Museo Metropolitano de Arte. Algunos de sus seguidores, según una revista publicada por la RISD, son Lady Gaga, Madonna, Anne Hathaway y Missy Elliot. Su especialidad son los adornos que van sobre la cabeza, intentando darles un look futurístico y funcional. La influencia que llevó a esta diseñadora a crear el "Endless Echo Hat", fue el dios griego Eco y Narciso. El nombre de la marca de Lee es H E I D I L E E. Inside → Start Here #ThoughtsFromTheEditor FACING CHANGE There's nothing new about change - except that it's all about what's new. Ever since the Big Bang (the event, not the show) a mind boggling 13.8 billion years ago, the universe has been in a constant state of change. At an individual level, each of us is changing physiologically every day. Our cells grow, die or mutate and our bodies age, deal with viruses and bloom with bacteria. The very act of living is one of constant change. And yet most people aren't especially open to change or comfortable with it. Most of the political wrangling that goes on around the world centers on either pushing for or resisting change- whether it's confirming the right to same-sex marriage, pushing for a 2°C cap on global warming or striking to impose Sharia law. Change may be inevitable, but achieving it is rarely easy. And historically, it's often contentious, scary, and bloody. Fortunately, change is also both a noun and a verb: It's a thing that happens to us and around us but it's also something we can spearhead, if not control. We can take charge and make change- something artists and other innovators do when they push at the margins. In the spirit of this issue, which revolves around various ways RISD alums spark positive changes, we've introduced a few changes ourselves. As John Waters hammered home when he spoke at Commencement, it's the "job" of contemporary artists to question the status quo and agitate for change. "Refuse to isolate yourself," he told RISD's newest alumni. "Go out into the world and fuck it up beautifully."
#NewModesOfMaking HEADY STUFF Since 3-D printing opened up a whole new world of making for H E I D I L E E 05 GD, the Brooklyn-based designer has been producing fabulous hats that appeal to a wide rage of fans- including Lady gaga, Madonna, Anne Hathaway, G-Dragon, Missy Elliott and Lauryn Hill. Her semi-flexible Vortex baseball caps (popular at this year's Maker Faire in NYC) are the most high-res 3D-printed wearables on the market. Whether working in bamboo, glass or laser-sintered nylon, Lee makes head adornments that are futuristic, fanciful and functional. Her H E I D I L E E Echo Hat (see also page 1) references the ancient Greet myths of Echo and Narcissus while offering a very contemporary commentary on today's tendency to experience the world through the "echo chamber" of social media.
