Let’s take a look at Martha Jones this Fandom in Color! Appearing as a companion on New Who, she meets The Doctor while attending medical school, and later organizes a revolution to save the planet Earth.

Martha was a somewhat controversial character. Some fans were still recovering from the loss of previous companion Rose Tyler, and because Doctor/Rose was a popular ship, Martha’s one-sided feelings for The Doctor became a source of contention. Some saw her race as a contributing factor to the strong dislike for her in parts of the fandom. For other fans, though, she became a favorite companion in no time.

Fanworks commonly explore Martha’s canon storyline or her time with the Torchwood Institute. Fans ship her with the Tenth Doctor, as part of a polyship with The Doctor and Jack Harkness, and, less frequently, with Rose Tyler.

Doctors offices hang up on pregnant people trying to schedule pre- and post-natal appointments for themselves because their voices or their names aren’t feminine enough. And if they manage to make the appointment, they can get harassed out of the waiting rooms or face medical malpractice behind closed doors.

Charities and benefits made for pregnant or new mothers don’t accept pregnant/new fathers or non-gendered parents. The WIC fund is called women, infants, and children.

If we degender pregnancy and childbirth (and periods while we’re at it) we open up support for every trans and intersex person who needs it. We normalize pregnant people of other genders and sexes, leaving less room for harassment and malpractice and more accountability for those who decide to be assholes anyway.
