they are both utterly irredeemable villains and completely insane about it. absolute wackjobs. they will kill you and your whole family and smile about it the entire time. empathy is a stranger to them. love could not fix them. nothing could teach them compassion.

and of course their role in the story they are a part of is that they are both obsessed with a heroic figure—someone they put a great deal of time and effort into manipulating for the purpose of making it more fun to kill later.

zenos, though… he understands himself completely. he knows who he is, he knows how he feels, he knows his motivations. he dies with a smile on his face.

xue yang dies clutching a piece of candy. he dies desperate to get back the thing he ruined. he thinks he understands why he does what he does and he thinks he knows how he’ll feel about it and he is so so so wrong about basically all of it.

That's one of the more heinous parts of AI. Yes, it destroys the planet. Yes, it results in jacked up RAM prices and loud data centers cropping up like weeds in neighborhoods. But it is also literally addictive to use if you're stressed out by work and seeking an easy source of dopamine, reassurance, and companionship.
