My name is Em, also known as @headache-whumps ! I am a new whump blog focused on all things headaches, migraines, and painful psychic powers my beloved. I’m 22, and use she/her pronouns.

My goal with this account? Well, Tumblr’s horrible search system brings up the same 5 gifs when you search up ‘headache whump.’ I want to change that. I’ll be tagging all my fav gifs with more tags focused on head pain and psychic powers. You can expect to see these favorite tropes of mine:

In the future I plan to get into gif making, especially for shows like DOPE that have basically no content on tumblr, as well as making a spreadsheet of all the headache whumps I know. Stay tuned!

I’ve been thinking about this trope for a while, and I want to ask for people’s thoughts on possibly coining a term for it as a community.

In my head, I’ve been referring to it as “talked about whump.” Not really grammatically correct, as the ‘talked about’ part is meant to be an adjective, not a verb. Anyways THATS NOT IMPORTANT

To describe the trope, it is conversations & words other characters say about whumpee, primarily the whump they are dealing with. Some examples would include non-whumpee characters saying things like….

“He told me his head felt like it was on fire, so I gave him a couple painkillers.”

“If you could stop having psychic visions in the middle of fighting, that’d be great.”

Whumpee can be in the room, completely absent from the conversation, or the person being talked to. Every option’s good. love it as equally as whump. For real. I think it’s just the idea that people care about the whump, and it actually has weight. That weight adds a whole nother layer of fun.

Fav examples have to be in Supernatural when Dean is telling their dad about Sam’s visions. “Started out as nightmares, but then he started seeing things when he was awake.” Or, the Chocobros talking about Noctis’ headaches in Final Fantasy 7. I’m restraining myself to two examples cause the list can go on and on.

The stoic, the tough guy, the comic relief, the carefree one, the mental machine; anybody who’s got some kind of exterior set up with the intention to hide their pain. That all breaks in one instant, and he’s lying in the rubble, dust settling on his pores, in his mouth. His teammate lies in front of him, slowly heaving themselves up.

His breath is shaky— He knows he can’t cough, because if he moves in any way, that horrible sticky feeling across his abdomen is going to switch into pain. He blinks. Reality floods back. Something is starting to sting.

Teammate doesn’t see Whumpee yet. Is that good for Whumpee? Is he thankful for his pain to be hidden? Or does he realize his brain is too foggy right now, and knows that being grateful right now is delusional?

Whumpee looks down. He sees it. It’s worse than he can fully realize; his brain can only drink up so much of the blood at a time. Oh, God.

“Teammate…” He says, but nothing comes out. He coughs to try again, and that does him in.

He groans, a weak little sound. He sounds too young. But it’s all he could manage. Teammate finally looks over.

Depending on the character, they could be asking one or multiple of the following questions in their mind. This will be the determining thought behind the one raspy sentence they’ll be able to get out.

Is Teammate stupid?

Can they not see I’m fucked up?

Am I fucked up, based on how they’re looking at me?

Can they hear me?

Do I need to make it so obvious?

Do I have time to explain?

I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but

“I need help.”

boy did i go on a damn journey trying to watch it. after scrounging the internet, every wabbit hole, the nth page of google, twitter posts, and every streaming site and server i could find, i’ve come to the conclusion that the only way to watch it (if you’re american, or honestly even as far as anyone not in the eastern hemisphere) is with a VPN.

the cool thing about a vpn is that it usually has a free trial! i used surfshark.

now, once you’re connected to Japan with the vpn. i found two sites that stream DOPE; one site has the first four episodes with subtitles, and the other has all episodes, but no subtitles at all. quite a drag, but hey, if you’re in it for the whump, dialogue ain’t thaaaat important ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

anyways, i can message you the sites, as i don’t want to post them publicly and accidentally cause them to get taken down.

Whumpee gets chronic (or magical!) headaches. He keeps them hidden, to not bring attention to his weakness. For the first time Teammate witnesses Whumpee get a sudden, intense attack, and they are a little too under the influence for this.

Teammate and Whumpee are chilling, hanging out together on the couch. Maybe a little high. Maybe a little drunk. After a lapse in conversation, Team Member takes a hit/sip and looks over to see their friend is suddenly very tense. Teammate can actually hear Whumpee’s breathing; his neck is craning slowly downward, his jaw tight, maybe mouth parted, a bit in awe over the sudden burst of pain filling his head. A hand is raised in the air, as if waiting to see whether his head should need it soon.

“What’s up with you?” says Teammate, more taken aback by their friend’s face than they are concerned.

“Ah… goddamn…” Whumpee mumbles. He drops his hand to his knee, gripping his pants.

Teammate thinks this is lightly amusing. “Too much?” he asks. Though, Whumpee hadn’t been coughing before, and they’re usually able to match each other’s pace.

Whumpee cracks a weak smile and huffs. “Yeah. I just need a second.”

“Alright, that’s cool,” says Teammate. They busy themselves with another hit/sip.

The pain has numbed a bit, feeling like a swirling cloud, waiting impatiently to break into a twister. He blinks, and relaxes his body with a sigh.

“You good?”

It’s the urge his body makes to respond to his friend, that one moment of weakness, that does him in.

Suddenly the pain takes back the offensive. Like a shockwave after the explosion, pressure builds, crawling up the back of his neck and scrambling towards any available space it can; inside each fold of the brain, against the walls of his head, swelling and surging with intensity. Whumpee’s face scrunches. He involuntarily cries out. His hand flies to the side of his head, pressing down like it’s an open wound.

Teammate sits up. “Dude!”

Whumpee curls into himself, his free hand gripping the side of the couch. A shaky groan escapes his throat.

“Okay, okay. What’s wrong?”

Whumpee’s breathing is uneven and heavy. His clothes are too warm, everything is touching his skin wrong. “God— my head.”
