#nosebleed

So I’ve been wanting to do this for a bit because over the years I’ve received quite conflicting advice on how to handle nosebleeds, and now I finally have the right answer.

Okay, so first things first, if you have a nosebleed, do NOT stick anything in your nose. This includes tissues, cotton balls, toilet paper, paper towels, literally anything. I repeat DO NOT STICK ANYTHING IN YOUR NOSE. I’ll explain why. Doing so can mess with clotting, as the blood clot will stick to whatever you’ve stuck in your nose rather than just clotting naturally, and thus when you go to take it out or change it you run the high risk of taking the blood clot with you. EVEN IF YOU THINK THE MATERIAL YOU’RE STICKING IN YOUR NOSE WON’T YOINK OUT THE BLOOD CLOT DO NOT STUCK IT IN YOUR NOSE. It’s better to just not do so, trust me.

So you’re probably wondering what you should do instead. This is going to be annoying, but it’s the best way to go about it. You’re gonna have to pinch your nose and face downwards (like eyes to the floor) for 15 minutes. I recommend doing this over a sink or something you can easily clean up. I’d also recommend breathing through your mouth so you don’t accidentally ‘breath’ the blood clot (plus if you’re doing it right both your nostrils should be pinched shut so you can’t breath out your nose anyway). After 15 minutes, un-pinch your nose and see in the blood had stopped. If it’s still going, pinch your nose again and wait another 5 minutes, check again, and repeat this process until it has stopped. Once the nosebleed has stopped, please be careful with your nose for at least the rest of the day. Something as silly as breathing through your nose way too hard can cause it to happen again.

Now, we’re not done yet, as I also have some advice if your nose continues to bleed even after the 15 minutes or if you get frequent nosebleeds. There are some things that may have to be fixed or looked into by a doctor if the previous sentence is true about you.

If your nose continues to bleed excessively even after the 15 minutes, you may have a clotting issue or other blood-related issue. I suggest looking to see if your family has any history of blood issues/diseases such as the inability to clot properly or quickly. Talk to your doctor, they may refer you to an ENT. Tell them about literally anything your family has that could’ve been passed to you, especially if it’s blood related. Even something like ‘oh my great grampa was cauterized’ may be useful. If you have a period, let them know if you bleed heavily/how much you bleed.

If you get frequent nosebleeds, you’ll also want to visit a doctor. They’ll likely advise you to keep your nose moisturized, this is important, but I also recommend you visit an ENT. Sometimes, like with me, there’s a blood vessel toward the front of your nose that just b bleeds at every minor inconvenience (I’m exaggerating but that’s basically what it is from what I remember). Anyway, what they’re gonna do, if that’s the case, is cauterize the blood vessel. This will hurt, but it’s better for you in the long run. Trust me. It’s important to keep in mind which nostril tends to be the one that bleeds so they can find the blood vessel thingy.

If you have both heavy/prolonged bleeding and frequent nosebleeds (like me) follow the advice of both those paragraphs.

I would also like to note I am not a doctor. I’m also not an adult. This advice is based off my own experiences as well as what the doctors I go to have told me/asked about over and over. I made this in the hopes that it would clear up things like I wish someone had done for me significantly earlier in my life instead of me dealing with them on my own the wrong way.
