Nice dinner out (◍•ᴗ•◍)
wuko getting perceived by 40 million people cus of that hbomberguy video is still so insane to me
The female tributes of the 50th Hunger Games, Louella McCoy and Maysilee Donner (and Lou Lou)
Given the dangerous and deeply false stereotype that children are unsafe around queer and black people (because they’re viewed as predators), I thought it was so heartwarming how Mike, Will, Lucas, and Robin were the main ones who were protecting the kids, and how gentle they were

okay lets actually get into it. i am once again obsessed and devasted by squid season three's futility of hope. how pointless it becomes to hope for things, to wish for the games to stop, to want to go home. the futility of hope sits at the cornerstone of this season because, by the end of the season, that pointlessness has finally found its purpose. its found it's meaning.
constrast hyunju's death with the birth of the baby and this all makes sense. we're told in season two that all hyunju wanted was to finish her surgeries and move to thailand. she wanted to live a fulfilling life fully as herself in a place where she feels that she can do that. same with the mother and son. they wanted to go back to their house and have dinner with everyone, clear the son's debt then just live simply, maybe open a shop if im not mistaken.
but then season three happens and all of that hope becomes pointless. hyunju literally finds the exit in the hide and seek game, she steps on the threshold, she's almost right there, but then she remembers. she remembers the others and that baby. so of course she goes back for them because there's no man left behind, and in doing that she's killed. she was right there, she was almost out, she had her dreams within reach, her hope hit the ceiling then it was gone. pointless. except not really because there is a baby. and i know that people have mixed feelings about the baby but you guys literally need to understand what symbols are for. the baby is new hope and purity. something that, at the time is untainted by the games, by the greed of the people in power. whereas every other player has been. they've fought and killed for this money. they've done everything they could for the money. they're soaked through with the blood of greed, with lives of everyone who died before them.
so it makes perfect sense that people would die for the sake of the baby. for the sake of new hope. the old lady mother literally kills her son for the baby. it doesn't matter if she just met this baby and the mom only days ago, it's still a baby. the baby hasn't done anything to anyone. the baby is an ushering of hope. the baby kills the futility of fighting against the system.
gihun's silence in the first couple of eps spoke volumes on how pointless the fight against the system had become. he'd forfeit his votes and nothing would change. they were still stuck there, they were still trapped. and so to see all of that change with the baby is brilliant, im sorry. to see gihun find new hope and purpose in a character who is literally the symbol of new hope and purpose is the most direct metaphor in current media. to see gihun die for the baby is exactly what i would expect him to do.
hope in squid game is futile and pointless until it is not. which is to say fighting against a system might be futile and pointless but our ancestors did it for us. and so would we not do it for the next generation? is that not then our purpose?
i constantly think about how, upon recognition that she was dying, lenore dove immediately turns to haymitch to try and get her final poster out. This girl, with such a feverishly rebellious spirit, needed to make the final thing she said to haymitch matter. And it was incredibly desperate, because haymitch at the time had no real way of stopping the reaping, but still, she makes him promise, promise to stop that sun from rising on another one; and 25 years later, this promise directly leads to the dismantling of the systems she ached to bring down so much.
The Reluctant Victor, inspired by The Reluctant Bride by Auguste Toulmouche - I just thought that this painting was SO perfect for Katniss and I had to draw it!
A lot of people have asked me to talk about Prim holding the crown, so here's a general deep dive into the characters I picked and their placements!
Starting with Prim. She was reaped, which led to Katniss volunteering to save her. It's, of course, very unlikely that Prim would have won the Games like Katniss did. Prim innocently playing with the crown that could have never been hers is also a reference to how excited she was when Katniss' wedding was happening, how she looked at it with children's eyes, impatient for her to try on the dresses. But she's also not as naive or helpless as Katniss believes, which is why her expression is grave and not cheerful.
Asterid is kissing Katniss' forehead in a very motherly gesture. Katniss is unmoved, though she still takes her hand. This is a reference to Katniss' resentment towards her mother when she stopped caring for them after Burdock's death, but also to Katniss' attempts at forgiving her in Catching Fire.
Effie is sitting at Katniss' feet, holding her hand. This represents the sincere -yet sometimes misguided- dedication that Effie has to Katniss. It also felt like an interesting placement, as Victors are often idolized by Capitol citizens.
Katniss, of course, is at the center. She's the reluctant victor, in her fire dress (with a lot of orange in it to reference Peeta, shhh). I hesitated to give her the wedding dress Snow forces her to wear instead, but felt that her fire dress was more recognizable and striking, and better represented how she is seen by the world: the girl on fire.
The doubling of tribute numbers. The miscarried Abernathy twins. The Donner sisters who Haymitch carries a fascination for as consequence. Louella being replaced by Lou Lou, a name that only mimics the first half of her name, and a girl who matches her in appearance only. The Appalachia legends of mimics. Tam Amber’s set of pins, one dropped down a well, the other discarded. The two versions of the games: the one that Haymitch remembers and the edited, falsified version of them without the real content. The two bags of gumdrops. The fraternal affection he feels for Louella and Lou Lou, the artificial twins, and Maysilee’s offer to be his sister—the second one she gives in the book. A bond with a real twin, both pairs healing the sisters he never did know. The split between what is natural and what is manufactured or forged, bonds that that grow on their own, or are forced into existance. And if the distinction makes any difference to the person it impacts.

haymitch says himself katniss is like him, but luckier.
katniss realized the berries were nightlock before peeta ate them.
just saw young haymitch fanart of him with white skin and blonde hair and it threw me off so much😭😭 i truly forget that’s how he’s probably going to look in the movie it’s so heartbreaking
i just had a very unrealistic wish that i desperately want fulfilled in sunrise on the reaping… what if the epilogue is set post-haymitch accomplishing everything he wanted to, i.e., the revolution, meaning we get to see him as he was at the end of mockingjay. Katniss talks about how he finally opens up and contributes 23 years of tributes whom he mentored and then were killed by the capitol, so what if instead we see that from haymitchs perspective? of him living his life after everything he’s been through, and showing us whether he ever truly found peace? (as much as he could, anyway)
LOLL the way this ended being exactly what happened😭😭😭 don’t know why i was so convinced that this wouldn’t happen, i guess i just didn’t think she would show everlark again
Long shots
well, i just finished sunrise on the reaping, at sunrise, and. The first thought to immediately strike me as the tears flowed was, how many people have died fighting, and waiting, for the sunrise of liberation to come? how many people are still dying, right now, to fight for it, or just as collateral? The epilogue was beautiful but also heartbreaking to read because we are still very much in this fight in our world, and will likely be for a long time.

"Uhmm, says the comic book nerd who collects trading cards in her spare time."
the chances of the SOTR epilogue being of Haymitch, Katniss, and Peeta just raised exponentially for me
they're giving that man a NORMAL and PROPER birthday !!
