i don't know if accidentally giving your cat a wig when you cuddle them is a plus side or down side of having long hair
Thermica is the art of manipulating energy. Everything in existence is energy in some form, and those born with the gift can tap into this truth.
The Laws of Thermica
Rule 1. Conservation
Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It must come from somewhere and go somewhere.
Rule 2. Release
Stored energy that isn’t released in time will force its way out violently.
(eg. Example: Kinetic energy may launch the caster into the air.)
Rule 3. Loss
All conversions are imperfect. Every act of magic releases unusable heat, entropy.
Rule 4. Heat Buildup
The more energy a mage channels, the hotter their body becomes. Push too far, and the mage burns alive from the inside.
Rule 5. Efficiency
Practice reduces energy loss, but no one reaches perfection. Most mages plateau at ~90% efficiency.
The Seven Energies:
Casters can manipulate the seven primary forms of energy:
- Thermal – Heat, fire, conduction.
- Kinetic – Motion, momentum, impact.
- Light – Visible spectrum, reflection, refraction.
- Electrical – Currents, sparks, fields.
- Sound – Vibration, resonance, shockwaves.
- Radiant – Broader electromagnetic spectrum (beyond light).
- Radiation – Nuclear and radioactive forces (dangerous, unstable).
Entropy (waste heat) cannot be manipulated.
Risks & Costs:
- Entropy Residue - Every spell leaves behind unstable and unusable heat.
- Overload - Drawing too much energy at once chars the mage from the inside. Corpses are often blackened husks, sometimes ruptured by steam or glowing burns.
- Heat Radiation - Excess energy radiates into the environment.
Social Role of a caster:
- Once viewed as outcasts, mages are now largely integrated into society.
- Many live normal lives with families, jobs, and homes.
- Some serve as “human engines" powering public transport or machinery by channeling their energy safely.
- Training is rare and casters have to rely on trial and error.
Uses & Abuse:
- Everyday Use: Heating food, lighting lamps, powering small machines, cooling drinks, amplifying sound.
- Industrial Use: Public transport, factories, construction work.
- Military Use: Energy manipulation can turn the battlefield into a furnace, collapse buildings with resonance, or redirect bullets with kinetic manipulation.
Edge Cases & Advanced Concepts
- Chaining: Multiple mages can cascade conversions (e.g., sound → kinetic → light), but losses compound quickly.
- Ambient Feeding: Casters can draw from fires, thunderstorms, crowds, or any dense energy source to sustain themselves.
Ethics & Law:
- Draining life-linked energy (like food energy or brain electricity) is considered a crime — often murder.
- Industrial mages sometimes face stigma as “expendable batteries,” though society is divided on whether this is exploitation or civic duty.
:0 v interesting take :) could chemical storage be similar to the energy storage described? Fun to think about sound manipulation vs kinetic manipulation

It is time! The best time! The time when I inflict my cat upon ye via Blaze! Behold! A sweet baby!
i like it when curses have consequences and every spell backfires.
you may have a thousand protective spells on you, but does it matter when everything around you is crumbling and dying, and all you can do is watch?
oh, you can predict the future? so what if you can't prevent it.
maybe you've been blessed with a power your mother only could've dreamt of? well, this power is too destructive to be useful anyways.
even if you can have insight into the mysterious events of the past, you can't make sense of the voices, each telling you their own version, talking all at once. the shadows of the past kings are everywhere but you can't destinguish them, always lingering in the corner of your eye.
Curses be wilding
(A blessing that will destroy your life)
YIPPEE WAHOO EYETEST IMAGERY
I'm so in love with consequential magic.
Give me arcana that feels alive, living and breathing and dangerous. Give me magic that will consume you if you aren't careful to train. I want to see battle mages carefully maintaining how much magic they've channeled so it doesn't burn them. I want ambitious wizards who unknowingly let their magic eat them alive. I want scarring that leaves the bearer unable to cast magic from a spell that was too powerful for them to handle. I want good magic users to border on ethereal and succumbing to the arcane because the human body wasn't built to handle such forces but insist on bending them to their will.
One of the dominant models of magic and superheroes is that everyone has their "thing", what I would call a bespoke magic system, but is mostly just a power that sits orthogonal to all other powers. This crops up all the time, because it's really really good for having dynamic fights, for characterizing people through their powers, for having new surprises and twists, and just generally keeping things going.
It's adaptable to all kinds of genres. Superheroes are the obvious one, whether it's canonized as Quirks or just an aspect of the setting. But I'm pretty sure that the basic concept was first invented in anime, with marital arts settings, where every character had their own jutsu or whatever, or the system in theory is all about ki manipulation or equivalent exchange but in practice everyone has their own particular niche. You can slot this into urban fantasy, giving every vampire their own special Power, or you can have some magical fantasy thing where everyone has their own unique Semblance.
So this is all well and good, but it leaves us with a narrative hole, which is progression. Having a unique power is cool, because you can think of new uses for it, have unique matchups, etc., but it doesn't give you that juicy sense of becoming more, and if you're facing down terrifying villains with their own powers, then a god-tier power is just kind of ... random. Luck of the draw, rather than the consequence of a powerful will or keen mind.
You can strip out limitations and amplify effects, and this is cool and good, or you can lean back away from uniqueness and toward uniformity, which I think is sometimes the right call, depending on your narrative needs.
So you say that actually the guy who can swap places with someone and the guy who can cut people from a distance are both unwitting hyperspecialists in the same field of magic or whatever, and that in theory, with unlimited time to train and experiment and explore, each could do what the other does.
This allows for a lot of snazzy narrative stuff. Two intense rivals "learn" each other's techniques, or at least adapt them into their own technique. Maybe the guy who does teleport swaps never learns to cut from a distance, but his teleport swap incorporates a cut into it, slashing at the person he's trading places with. A widower incorporates aspects of his dead wife's power, a mentor passes down elements of his technique to all his students, a young protagonist has some angst about using the aspect he got from his abusive father, etc.
If powers are a reflection of character, then you get to physically manifest a character's relationship with other people.

Dealing with Healing and Disability in fantasy: Writing Disability
[ID: An image of the main character from Eragon, a white teenage boy with blond hair in silver armour as he sits, with his hand outstretched. On his hand is a glowing blue mark. He is visibly straining as he attempts to heal a large creature in front of him. /End ID]
I'm a massive fan of the fantasy genre, which is why it's so incredibly frustrating when I see so much resistance to adding disability representation to fantasy works. People's go-to reason for leaving us out is usually something to the effect of "But my setting has magic so disability wouldn't exist, it can just be healed!" so let's talk about magic, specifically healing magic, in these settings, and how you can use it without erasing disability from your story.
10 Tips for Crafting Authentic Characters
Give them depth: Create characters with multidimensional personalities, including strengths, weaknesses, quirks, and flaws. They should have a mix of virtues and vices that make them relatable and interesting.
Provide backstory: Develop a detailed backstory for each character, even if only a fraction of it makes it into your story. Understanding a character's past experiences, traumas, and motivations will inform their actions and decisions in the present.
Show their emotions: Allow your characters to express a range of emotions realistically. Show how they react to different situations, both internally and externally, to make them feel human and relatable.
Give them distinct voices: Each character should have a unique way of speaking, with distinct vocabulary, syntax, and speech patterns. This helps readers differentiate between characters and adds authenticity to their dialogue.
Create internal conflicts: Give your characters inner struggles and conflicting desires that they must grapple with throughout the story. Internal conflicts add depth and complexity to characters, making them more believable.
Show their relationships: Develop meaningful relationships between characters, whether they're familial, romantic, platonic, or adversarial. Show how these relationships evolve and influence the characters' development over time.
Make them evolve: Characters should grow and change over the course of the story, driven by their experiences and the challenges they face. Allow them to learn from their mistakes, overcome obstacles, and develop as individuals.
Ground them in reality: Anchor your characters in the real world by giving them relatable experiences, hobbies, jobs, or cultural backgrounds. Incorporating realistic details adds depth and authenticity to their portrayal.
Show their flaws: Imperfect characters are often the most compelling. Don't be afraid to showcase your characters' flaws and vulnerabilities; these imperfections make them more relatable and human.
Give them agency: Allow your characters to drive the plot forward through their actions, decisions, and choices. Avoid making them passive observers or mere vehicles for the story's events. Characters with agency feel more authentic and engaging to readers.
Ways to solve the Why Can’t They Use Magic To Fix Everything problem:
•Magic has a cost. The more powerful the spell, the more it drains the caster’s life.
•’We tried that ages ago.The gods grew angry at our arrogance and stripped most of our powers away.’
•Magic is tied to the stars and planets. Its full potential can only manifest on certain astrological events.(And these are once-in-a-millennia type events)
•Only one will a pure heart and selfless intentions can use their full power.
•All magic users are descendants of a (god/spirit). As the years have gone by, the blood has become more diluted, and magic has grown weaker as a result.
•Spell casters can only cast (finite number of spells). They end up using their gift on trivial matters.
•’After the war, we realized the dangers that magic presented. And so we sealed it away, lest it destroy the world.’
•Everyone has magic. Trying to solve one problem is futile as it can be easily undone(often violently and with much destruction)
•inverse of the above: everyone has magic, but their powers are limited and (mostly) harmless.
•Individual, company, or nation has a monopoly on the only substance that can negate magic. As they rule the world, they have installed anti-magic devices everywhere.
•Individual, group, company, or nation has a monopoly on magic. To insure their grip on power, all magic users that do not submit to them are killed.
•An act of good will spawn one of evil. The use of fire will cause somewhere to grow cold and dark. And to save a life, one must sacrifice another.
•The only magic people have access to is Chaos Magic. No one uses it, for obvious reasons.

A customer contacted our team with questions, and then finished their email with: "I am daunted by the complexities and unknowns." I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since.
Reblog if you are daunted by the complexities and unknowns
Relationships that have real king/lionheart energy, that whole “I have sworn myself wholly to you, I am your sword arm, I am your dog” to someone else’s “you are the one person in this world I can rely on, and I am both bolstered and burdened by your absolute faith in me” vibe, but it’s in circumstances that are like. so low stakes.
