I wondered if the next Dr Who Magazine comic would do something new, and it looks like they've started a multi-part First Doctor story set during the Daleks' Master Plan. I wonder if this will be a one-time thing, or if it'll kick off another period of rotating through different Doctors, like what happened in the last wilderness years.

Summary:
There they were, naked as the day they were born, lounging in the woods like a pair of – not nymphs. What was the boy version of a nymph? Satyrs, perhaps. A pair of handsome naked satyrs sunning themselves on the warm grass. It was so very like being inside a painting. He could just see it in the national gallery, pastoral scene with river and naked satyrs.
The afternoon seemed so fragile. He couldn’t shake the feeling that someday soon he’d turn to Steven and say do you remember that planet – with the forest – we played naked in the river like boys and then we lay on the grass and you fed me berries? and Steven would look at him like he was losing his mind.
self reblog to say 1) you don't have to have listened to Oliver's audios to enjoy this (its about 30 pages long in Word and they start fucking on page 15) tho it will help and also 2)
Oliver: the brotherly bond Steven and I share is so nice :) he is such a good friend and I'm lucky to have him. :) I'm so happy that we are true friends and companions and even though he's very handsome I don't want anything else from our relationship :) I am not sad about this at all :)
Oliver, the moment he realises Steven returns his feelings:
"you don't have to have listened to Oliver's audios to enjoy this"
I mean, true, but; YOU SHOULD ABSOLUTELY LISTEN TO THE OLIVER HARPER TRILOGY! It's amazing and he makes such a great addition to the First Doctor and Steven's era.
hands down the best part of the dalek invasion of earth is when barbara hijacks a lorry and drives it through a pack (herd? crowd? someone tell me what the collective noun is) of daleks with no hesitation whatsoever.
in case you have not seen it (you should it's great) i humbly offer you this recreation:
it is my sincerely held belief that if nuwho writers just SLIGHTLY increased the frequency of companions running daleks over with lorries, doctor who would still be on the air today.

He couldn’t tear his eyes off them. It was rude – he knew it was rude. He’d made a point not to stare at any of the canoodling couples dotted around the club. But these two – two men, holding each other and kissing and kissing where everyone could see, he couldn’t look away, and then they shifted slightly and the light from the bar fell upon their faces, and oh, hell, oh bloody hell, one of the men was Steven.

im everyone im planning to post an Oliver Harper fic shortly so im just gonna explain who he is
Oliver Harper is a Dr Who companion who appears exclusively in Big Finish's Companion Chronicles series.
He appeared in 3 Companion Chronicles, all released in 2011:
The Perpetual Bond
The Cold Equations
The First Wave
You can get these for £3.99 a piece from Big Finish. Or you can get them wherever you acquire Doctor Who audios if you are in the habit of Acquiring them elsewhere. I'm not the boss of you.
The Companion Chronicles is a series of (typically) 2-part stories featuring two actors, a Classic Who companion actor who narrates the story and a guest star. The Oliver Harper trilogy are Steven Companion Chronicles featuring Oliver as a secondary narrator.
Oliver has the distinction of being the first companion created specifically for the Companion Chronicles range (odd decision given the whole point of the series is about showcasing pre-existing companions but I am not complaining) and the first Big Finish-exclusive First Doctor companion.
Oliver is a city trader from 1960s London who crosses paths with the Doctor and Steven after stumbling upon an alien conspiracy at his workplace. He decides to run away in the TARDIS bcos, unbeknownst to the rest of the team, he has a Big Secret and due to his Secret he is wanted by the police.
He's played by Tom Allen who is a pretty well known British stand up comedian doing an unusual dramatic turn.
All three stories take place between The Daleks' Master Plan and The Massacre.
The Perpetual Bond is a solid bit of Big Finish. The Cold Equations is the best instalment of the series and a genuinely good time. The First Wave is uhh. Well it's an essential part of the story arc. And it sure does exist.
OK I have some more things to say about Oliver but 🚨🚨🚨it WILL involve spoiling major elements of his Companion Chronicle trilogy. If you are intending to listen to his stories I wouldn't read any further. BUT if you are intending to read my fic about him without having listened to his stories (i know ppl will do that i always have people reading my fics that way) there are some important bits of Oliver Context.
here is the spoiler zone:
Oliver's Big Secret is that he's gay; the crime he's wanted for is, as he himself puts it, 'falling in love with another man'. I'm pretty sure he was Big Finish's first gay companion?
Anyway: its pretty good. Like its a LITTLE bit 'very special episode' but I like the way it delves into an element of 1960s British life in a way the TV show would never have been able to & i like the way it draws attention to the criminalisation of homosexuality in the UK, an issue which in some respects is still ongoing. (There's a Resonance IMO to Oliver arriving thousands of years in the future and finding that, according to the historical record, he is still considered a criminal)
Alas I must move into the next Thing about Oliver:
oh boy. Big Finish used to ahve a bury your gays problem. i THINK they have improved in this regard more recently (im way out of date) but back in the early 2010s it was very noticeable. I regret to report that at the end of The First Wave poor Oliver sacrifices himself to save the rest of the group and straight up explodes.
i was spoiled for this before listening and i remember going in prepared to give it the benefit of the doubt bcos i do actually think it's fine for fictional gay people to die AND i like stories where main characters die but i can only describe the execution as a cruel & unnecessary twist. I don't think I've come across any fans who liked it. boo 🫳🪨🪨🪨<- me throwing rocks at writer Simon Guerrier
ok that's my Oliver Primer now everyone read my fic when I post it
my not-very-well-informed gut feeling is that the fashion for balding men to go Full Bald is relatively recent and that historically men would either get a toupee or just deal with it and i think this is why something about Oliver's appearance has always pinged to me as 'off'
there are a number of worthy contenders for the title 'first gay doctor who companion' but personally i like saying it's Oliver Harper bcos there's just something very funny to me about pointing to well known TV comedian Tom Allen and saying 'he is the first gay doctor who companion'
in all honesty this is an extension of the fact that it's kind of funny to me to point to well known TV comedian Tom Allen and say 'he is a doctor who companion'

Steven yelling at the Doctor and leaving the TARDIS and the Doctor immediately collapsing into his 1 chair in his first ever Lost All My Companions Nobody Care Me depression
Followed up by Dodo coming in, followed by Steven running back in because the cops are coming, and the Doctor immediately using this most tenuous of excuses to kidnap his pet boytoy and a new granddaughter of the month
“Oh it’s so joe-ver” -> #heeheehoohoolife #neverstopneverstopping
the massacre is an all-timer of a doctor who serial. it's a historical, but it's specifically a historical about an event that the vast majority of viewers would be unfamiliar with. william hartnell is there twice but you'd never notice because the entire thing is missing. it has probably one of the greatest confrontations and speeches by both the doctor and his companion in doctor who history. the historical event in question is one of the bloodiest, most violent, most genuinely sickening in french history, and to be honest just history in general. steven suffers more in this one than he usually does, which is really saying something. the doctor just fucking abandons him in one of the most violent periods in french history. dodo is also there
#dear penny Anna whomst I am reblogging this from#I have been seeing posts about the massacre for years#I am not a doctor who fan.#I am a history nerd#Is this about St. Bartholomews day massacre?#Every fucking screenshot I've seen has that doctor guy and his entourage of young men dressed in late 16th century garb#First of all they are slaying but back on topic#What the hell happens. What do we know#Maybe I should correct something#Maybe I am not a doctor who fan. Yet.#I have been asking myself this question for a long time. Please. Anyone. Tell me if it is that masacre
yes, it's the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre. you sometimes see the story referred to as 'The Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve'*
tragically there are not screenshots at all as it's a missing story w no visual record; the images you've seen are photographs taking during the dress rehearsal.
*(some 60s who stories have multiple titles in use)**
**(I think 'The Massacre' is generally preferred as the historical event is not called 'The Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve' on account of it took place on the day itself and not the eve but I think the title might actually be referring to the fact that the events take place on the eve of the massacre given that there is a pivotal scene where the Doctor realises the massacre is going to happen the following day but i digress)
I mean: The Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve is already an incredibly long title... if they tried to make it more technically correct "The Eve of the Massacre of Saint Bartholomew's Day" would be even more OTT in length.
