but again I've done very little research I just think it could be more interesting than just "this is a mercenary company but we call it a guild for some reason"

Returning from a trip with a sack of goodies, and what would be shop trash, you have to get it inspected and reviewed by the guild ; you can't direct sell things above a town's own level/quality, for the mentioned reasons. You can donate intermediate stuff to the guild for outfitting newcomers. The rare and high power stuff has to be registered with the guild for legal accountability (this comes up relevant to the player because you get caught in the Rare And Legendary desk queue and the Adv in front of you logs a weapon that is Used In A Crime later. You can do a spot/knowledge check when you discover because the weapon does very distinctive damage). The guild also can and will go after your ass for neglecting to register Legendaries if you're spotted using one within X distance of a town
