I think part of Grace already mourned his crew before they died. Like, he knew that after the launch they would be essentially dead. No more communication aside from the Beetles returning to Earth in 26 years in the best case scenario (and they would be dead by then). He knew it was coming. But it’s so much different when it actually happens. DuBois and Shapiro weren’t supposed to go out like that and neither were Yao and Ilyukhina. When he had to grapple with the fact he’ll actually never get to never see them again, (or anyone on Earth for that matter), that he had to put their bodies to rest himself, he was also processing that he would be bound to join them in the grave. When he survives, I think he deals with a lot of survivor’s guilt. But in the end, they planned to die, and he was desperate to live.
