Sweeter Than the Cake
The midday sun was beating down on the deck of the Going Merry, but for once, the crew wasnât fighting for their lives, dodging marine cannonballs, or navigating a sudden, violent waterspout. Instead, they were occupied with something infinitely more serious: eating cake.
Sanji had completely outdone himself. It was a massive, three-tiered masterpiece covered in thick, fluffy white icing and stuffed to bursting with fresh, tart berries gathered from the last island. Naturally, this meant the galley had instantly devolved from a peaceful dining room into an absolute battleground.
[Reader] sat at the wooden bench, actively defending her slice with her fork like a skilled swordsman holding off an invading army. To her left, Zoro was completely ignoring the sweets in favor of a heavy bottle of sake, though his single eye was tracking the chaotic display with a look of mild amusement. To her right sat Luffy.
Luffy didnât simply eat cake; he completely inhaled it. He had already demolished three massive, towering pieces, and his cheeks were puffed out to their absolute limits like a squirrel storing acorns for a long winter.
"Mmhph! Thith ith the betht thign ever!" Luffy muffled around a massive mouthful, a small shower of white crumbs tumbling onto the clean table.
"Don't speak with your mouth full, you rubber idiot!" Sanji snapped fiercely from the stove, though he looked secretly pleased by the absolute, sweeping devastation of his hard work. "And make sure you leave some for Nami-san and [Reader]!"
[Reader] took a delicate bite of her own slice, closed her eyes, and let out a soft hum of pure, unadulterated bliss. It really was incredible. But in her sheer enthusiasmâand the general, frantic rush to eat before Luffyâs rubbery arms could snake across the table and steal itâshe didn't realize that a rather large, stray dollop of thick white icing had migrated from her fork. It landed squarely on the corner of her upper lip, just a fraction of an inch away from her mouth.
She went to take another bite, completely oblivious to the sweet smudge.
Luffy, however, was not oblivious.
His sharp eyes, which had been scanning the table for any tragic remnants of sugar, suddenly locked right onto her face. To Luffyâs brain, food was the ultimate priority, and food left behind on a beloved crewmate was an absolute, unforgivable tragedy. He didnât think. He didn't formulate a plan. He simply reacted with the raw, unchecked instinct of a golden retriever that had just spotted a dropped piece of premium bacon.
Before [Reader] could even swallow her current bite of cake, Luffy leaned heavily across the wooden bench. He didn't just leanâhe lunged forward, stretching his rubber neck just a few extra inches to get the perfect, unimpeded angle. His large hands clamped firmly onto her shoulders to steady his weight, and he planted his mouth right over the corner of hers.
Well, technically, he just swiped his pink tongue out in a quick, sharp motion to lick the dollop of icing clean off her skin.
But to anyone else in the room looking at the suddenness of the gesture, the sheer angle, and the way his wide straw hat completely obscured her face? It looked exactly like Monkey D. Luffy had just forcefully, passionately, and without a single shred of pirate shame, kissed [Reader] square on the mouth in broad daylight.
The reaction inside the narrow galley was instantaneous, violent, and completely synchronized.
CLATTER!
Sanjiâs favorite floral porcelain teacup slipped clean through his trembling fingers, smashing into a hundred jagged pieces on the floorboards. The cook froze entirely, his jaw dropping so low it practically hit the deck, his lit cigarette falling right out of his mouth and landing directly on the leather of his shoe. He didn't even notice the heat burning through his socks.
"L-Luffy...?" Sanji choked out, his voice ascending into a high-pitched frequency that only sea kings could hear. "WHAT DID YOU JUST DO TO [READER]?!"
Usopp, who had been mid-sip of his morning juice, did a textbook-perfect, terrifying double-take and sprayed the entire mouthful right across the table, completely drenching a startled Chopper who happened to be sitting opposite him. "HE KISSED HER! THE CAPTAIN HAS OFFICIALLY LOST HIS MINDS! WEâRE ALL ACCOMPLICES TO A CRIME!" Usopp shrieked, grabbing his curls and pacing the floorboards frantically.
Chopper, now dripping with sticky orange juice, stared with wide, innocent dinner-plate eyes, his little blue-nosed hooves flying to his furry cheeks in absolute shock. "Luffy and [Reader] are getting married?! Is this how it happens?! Do we need to sail to an island with a priest?!"
Even Zoro, the ultimate pillar of stoic indifference, choked heavily on his sake. He coughed violently, slamming the glass bottle onto the wood with a loud thud, his single eye wide with genuine, rare shock. He looked from Luffy, to [Reader], and then straight back to Luffy, his hand instinctively resting on the white hilt of Wado Ichimonji as if trying to figure out if he needed to defend her honor or just run for cover from Sanji's impending explosion.
Nami just sat entirely still at the end of the table, her fork frozen halfway to her open mouth, her eyes blinking in rapid, dazed succession. "I... I definitely didn't see that recorded on the log pose," she muttered blankly to herself.
Meanwhile, [Reader] was entirely, utterly paralyzed. Luffyâs heavy hands were still resting firmly on her shoulders, and his round face was mere inches away from hers. She could distinctly smell the rich sweetness of the berries on his warm breath. The exact spot where his tongue had just swiped was tingling wildly, burning a bright, furious crimson red that quickly and mercilessly spread across her entire face, up to the tips of her ears, and straight down her neck.
Her brain had entirely short-circuited. Did he just... did they just... in front of the entire crew?!
Luffy pulled back casually, smacking his lips with a loud, highly satisfied sound. He looked around the chaotic room, utterly bewildered by the absolute pandemonium that had just erupted over a simple snack.
"What's wrong with all of you?" Luffy asked, his voice entirely light and casual as he tilted his head, his straw hat shifting slightly against his back. "Are we being attacked by marines or something?"
"YOU ATTACKED HER!" Sanji roared, his eyes literally transforming into roaring, swirling blazes of real fire as he kicked his leg violently into the air, ready to launch a devastating kick straight into his captainâs face. "How dare you defile the pure, sweet [Reader] with your unwashed pirate mouth! I'll kick you clean into the Grand Line!"
"Eh? Defile?" Luffy blinked, completely confused as he looked down at [Reader]. He finally noticed the bright crimson flush taking over her cheeks and the wide-eyed way she was staring at him like she had just seen a sea king rise directly from the kitchen floorboards. "[Reader]? Are you broken? Why are you so red? Do you have a sudden fever?"
He reached up naturally, his rough, warm palm pressing flat against her forehead to check her temperature. The casual, unthinking intimacy of the gesture only made her face burn ten times hotter.
"L-Luffy," [Reader] finally managed to squeak out, her voice a full octave higher than it had ever been in her life. "You just... your mouth... on my face..."
"Oh! The icing!" Luffy grinned, a huge, carefree, toothy smile splitting his face with absolutely zero remorse or embarrassment. He wiped his mouth with the back of his sun-darkened hand. "You had a big chunk of it right there! Sanji always says not to waste food, so I helped you out. It was really good icing, too! You should check your other cheek, maybe there's more hidden over there."
The collective, exhausted groan of realization from the rest of the crew was absolutely deafening.
Usopp collapsed right back onto his wooden seat, dramatically wiping his sweaty brow. "Oh, thank heaven. It was just him being a total glutton as usual. My heart almost stopped beating."
"A glutton?!" Sanji shrieked, though the literal fire in his eyes died down to a low simmer. "Thatâs still highly, highly inappropriate! You don't just lick people's faces, you rubber bastard! Use a napkin!"
Nami pinched the bridge of her nose, letting out a long, thoroughly exhausted sigh. "I should have known better. Expecting any shred of actual romance from Luffy is like expecting Zoro to not get lost in a straight, brightly lit hallway."
"Hey!" Zoro snapped fiercely from his corner, though he looked visibly relieved as he quietly went back to his sake bottle.
Luffy ignored every single one of them, completely unfazed by the sudden lectures. He kept his warm hand resting on [Reader]âs shoulder, leaning in just a little bit closer again, his dark eyes sparkling with that stubborn, sweet sincerity that made it impossible for her to stay mad at him.
"Did I hurt you?" he asked softly, his voice dropping into that quiet, surprisingly gentle tone he only used when he was making sure his crew was genuinely okay. "I didn't mean to scare you, [Reader]. I just really didn't want the cake to go to waste."
[Reader] looked directly into his ridiculous, handsome, cream-smudged face, her heart still hammering a mile a minute against her ribs. The lingering embarrassment was definitely still there, but as she looked at himâso completely oblivious, so entirely Luffyâa small, breathless laugh finally escaped her lips.
"No, Luffy," she sighed softly, reaching up to gently swat his warm hand off her shoulder, though she didn't actually step away from his side. "You didn't hurt me. But next time... just tell me I have food on my face, okay? Or use a fork."
"Forks are way too slow!" Luffy laughed loudly, bouncing right back onto his heels and immediately reaching across the table for the last remaining slice of cake left on the platter. "Sanji! More cake! [Reader] needs another piece, look at her, sheâs still shaking!"
"Thatâs entirely because of you, you absolute idiot!" Sanji yelled back, already walking over with a fresh pot of hot tea, though he made sure to place a highly protective barrier of plates between Luffy and [Reader]âs side of the table.
As the galley dissolved completely back into its usual, noisy, comforting chaosâUsopp loudly arguing with Chopper about whether they needed to plan a wedding dress, Nami meticulously counting her Berries, and Zoro beginning to snore in the quiet cornerâ[Reader] gently touched the corner of her upper lip with her fingertips. It was still warm from his touch, and despite herself, she couldn't help but smile down into her teacup, her heart completely refusing to settle down for the rest of the voyage.
