Tap.
Tap. Tap.
The first thing Marina hears as she’s ripped out of sleep is the sound of a claw on glass, sharp and irritating. Next, is the pulsing pain of a headache not yet fully formed.
Great.
Her eyes open with a blurry intensity— whether from sleep or the fact her glasses are still on her desk she has no clue— and her body protests with cracks and creeks as she sits up. Her eyes find Ethan, lying there with the ragged blanket pulled to his chin, asleep. At least he’s still asleep, she muses self-deprecatingly.
Bright blue eyes find hers, somehow both inhumanly bright and monstrously dark. She hates the part of her that wants to reach out and gaze into her eyes until she can replicate their color on a canvas—though she’s never been particularly artistic. Her heart thumps in her chest— from fear, she tells herself.
“…your gonna wake him.”
Is all she can get out, a breathy whisper. Marina glances behind him, the sky lighting. It’s later—earlier?—than he normally stays out. He just grins, looking ecstatic about the idea of waking Ethan from his slumber. She glowers back at him.
“Why are you even here? It’s about to be day, Alex.” Alex? When did she start calling him Alex without thinking about it? Is she that close to him— does she think she’s that close to it? Alex just smiles and with an almost sing-song, cooing voice, says “I always make time for my darling wife,”
And he’s back on this wife thing, is all Marina can think. Glossing over that, she huffs, “go back to whatever hole you crawled out of. Won’t you like— die in the sunlight? Like a vampire?” She bites out.
“A vampire? Why, you say the kookiest things sometimes, dear. Well, if you want me gone so desperately, I’ll leave,” He tilts his head, smiling. “But, I should mention, that maybe you should come up with a reason as to why your once covered windows, are now lacking blinds. Wouldn’t want someone to.. get in.”
Marina freezes, staring at the monster. Was that a threat? Or a warning?

Authors note: Sorry I haven’t posted in so long, I’ve been super busy. Hope you guys enjoy!
The next thing Marina feels is the sharp feeling of being cold- freezing. It bites into her skin, her eyes flying open, her body feels weighed down like lead as she tries to thrash around. All she can see is murky brown and the stinging feeling of dirt in your eyes.
Where the hell is she?!
Finally, she is able to get her body to move, albeit slowly, moving up for what seems like eternity. When she finally breaks the surface, coughing and gasping, she sees the trees and the sharp sting of sunlight. She must be at the lake..
As she clamors onto the bank, Marina promises herself never again. She’s never going to use that stupid-magical tree ever again! Her clothes cling uncomfortable to her skin, with a groan and a the sharp sting of pain flaring in her lower back, legs and arms, she rolls over to gaze up at the soft blue sky. She can feel the small cuts from running in the underbrush burn as dirt is unintentionally rubbed into them. Staring up at the sky, she feels a wave of triumph. She got away! She escaped, she lived!
For how long is a question that will linger in her mind, distant, but there.
The walk back to the town is hard, the sun blaring on her back, the clothes clinging to her skin, the feeling of rocks and other underbrush digging into her bare feet and the cuts stinging with the stretch of movement. When she finally finds the main road back, Marina felt like she could kiss it.
As she sees the Matthew’s house, she breathes out a sigh of relief. Of comfort.
Marinas mind wanders to the Matthew’s.. are they okay? Angry? Worried? She’s been so worried about herself her thoughts haven’t even grace the realization that she left the door to the house unlocked!! Sure, the cowboy-William?- and redhead- Adam?- were chasing her, but there is more than just them! They could have slipped in behind her and the Matthew’s wouldn’t even know before it was too late!! A sinking feeling hits her gut as she races up the porch stairs and into the house. Nothing. Silence.
…
Surely they’re fine, Boyd and the rest of the town aren’t outside, and there’s no signs of well… death, she tries to comfort, her heart pounds in her chest anyway as she searches around, eyes wide. Marina finds Tabitha in the backyard, washing clothes.
“Oh, Marina! There you are! We were starting to get worried… you left so early this morning!”
Marina forces a smile on her face, staring into Tabitha’s thinly veiled worried expression. “Oh! Yeah.. I just.. decides to take a walk, yknow? Woke up really early..”
She clears her throat, “you need some help with the clothes, Tabi?” The nickname sounds like acid rolling off her tongue, the lie stinging her heart. When did she start lying to Tabitha? To the Matthew’s? She doesn’t want to seem.. delusional or anything but..
✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅๑┈•✦
Tap, tap, tap, tap.
Tap.
Marina thinks she’s going insane. Genuinely, and undoubtedly insane. The redhead has been tapping on the window for the past— what? Hour?
A chill runs down her spine, he’s never done this before.. stared into her room through a crack in the curtain? Yes! Muttered about some weird stuff at times? Also yes! But tapped insistently like he wanted her to lose her mind? No!
Tap. Tap.
Marina finally breaks, flinging back the curtains and glaring with a gaze that could break steal. The red heads soulless eyes stare back.
“What?! What could you possibly want?! You have my suffering, what else?!”
The redhead doesn’t have the decency to look embarrassed as he smiles— wide and uncomfortable on his face, sadistic.
“To see you, why else?”
She stares at him, anger and frustration coursing through her veins, she wants to yell—to scream. But all that comes out is a weak, “why?”. His— or well it’s— smile doesn’t seem to dim, just widens impossibly like he’s enjoying a game only he knows the rules to. He looks away, like he’s thinking. Marina hates that these things are intelligent enough for that. To think. To commit depravity just because they want to.
Not unlike humans, is a thought she doesn’t pay mind to.
“…because our time together is always so limited..”
His smile dims, and for a minute she feels a prick of empathy- not for it but for the feeling of not having enough time with your family.. with your loved ones. That’s something that’s being trapped taught her—she took too many things for granted.
“Why don’t you come outside? I can help you, Nichole.. I can keep you safe and sound, like I should’ve done the first time.. just open the window just a little, darling,”
“For your husband, no?”
Of course. As soon as she feels even the slightest hint of empathy for these things— they try to manipulate her. Give them an inch, they take a mile.
“You wish,” Is all Marina could push out, what else can she say? She could shut the blinds.. try and get some restless sleep.. worry about sleep walking off outside…she doesn’t need to speak to this thing, she has friends here! Like Tabitha… Fatima.. Boyd— she guesses. But there’s something so captivating about speaking to this monster, about speaking to something that won’t judge her— atleast not outwardly.
All he does is smile back, like this is a fun game he knows he will eventually win. “What’s that book you’re reading?”
Marina’s eyebrows raise, her eyes glancing down at her bed stand, where a book— “Then There Were None”— She had found it in the storage space in the diner.. she was never much of a reader but there’s nothing better to do. “..it’s a uh… it’s a mystery book.” Distantly, her mind catches on his speech.. he knows what a book is???
“Mh.” The thing— Alex— hums. Should she just call him Alex? That’s what the cowboy thing called him and well.. he calls her Nicole. But it feels so weird to give it a name, like it’s a dog.. or an actual person. It breeds familiarity, trust. And those are things Marina doesn’t want to even remotely feel around these things, especially him.
The silence feels stifling, harsh, suffocating.
“What’s it about?”
Marina feels the prickling feeling of wrongness as she starts to begrudgingly explain the plot.
What had she gotten herself into?
✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅๑┈•✦
Marina has started to regret indulging the red head in conversation— a momentary lapse in judgement made in a moment of loneliness, she defends to herself.
She stares out into the night, distantly watching the other monsters walk around. She wonders if they can telepathically communicate or they have just been doing this so long that their routines go without saying. The red head gazes at her from his spot just outside, on the road, a big smile on his face. It sends a shiver down her spine, though it doesn’t affect her as much as it used to.
Marina doesn’t want to focus on the fact that she might be getting used to the creature— that she’s becoming used to his presence.
Suddenly, a knock behind her knocks her out of her headspace—
“Marina..Are you still up?” Ethan’s soft voice pipes up. Her gaze lands on the clock— she’s long since stopped questioning how the electronics work in this town— 11:30. Marina’s brows furrow, why is Ethan up at this time?
Her socks slightly catch on the old wooden floor as she walks, opening the door with a soft creak. Her gaze down on the boy.
“Ethan? Buddy, why are you up?”
Marina tries to talk as softly as possible as she sinks down to eye level with the nine year old. He gazes up at her, wide eyed and soft. Marina feels a shot of guilt in her gut, she had been trying throughout her time in the town to pay attention to Ethan, to indulge him with games and stories.
She thinks that with the rest of the Matthew’s focused on well… survival, they have been a bit.. distracted from paying attention to the younger child. With Tabitha focusing on rearing Julie.. or Jim, and Jim off with his delusional plans of ‘finding a way out’, even at the expense of his family— Marina tries to ignore the feeling building that they will never get out of the town, that her hope is dwindling by the day—It’s hard to remember at times but Julie and Ethan are children.
“I had a weird dream… about the boy in white..”
Marina has long since heard about this boy— creature? From Ethan. At first she thought it was a kind of imaginary friend, a coping mechanism. But honestly, she wouldn’t be surprised if the boy is actually real.
Ethan seems scared as he shifts on his feet, his hands tugging on his dinosaur pajamas.
“C’mere buddy,” her hand finds his wrist, softly tugging him in the room. “Why don’t you sleep with me, yeah?”Marina tries to keep her voice soft as she moves to close the curtains, keeping her gaze decidedly away from the red headed creature— did he get closer? Ethan stairs at her from his spot on the bed, a look of curiosity on his face.
“Why are the curtains open? Mom says that the curtains aren’t supposed to be open at night..”
Marina tenses slightly, glancing at him. She smiles softly— awkwardly, and moves to grab her pillow and blanket, setting them on the floor. “I was just.. looking at the stars, Ethan.”
He doesn’t look like he believes her, but he doesn’t say anything as he lays down on the creaky twin bed.
“Goodnight, Marina..”
“Goodnight Ethan.”

Authors note: finally pushed out this chapter! I know things are getting confusing but just stick with me! I’m trying to kind of keep it hidden but also have it heavily applied, yknow? Hope you guys enjoy!
Tw: implied child murder, implied child sacrifice, implied cheating but not really, panic and Marina being stupid.

…………………
The thing stares at her like she’s the weird one, like she’s some animal in a cage that he’s watching to see if it does anything amusing. Her frown tightens and Marina finally forces out the words that have been bubbling in the back of her throat.
“What do you want with me?”
His smile widens to an almost impossible extent, eyes glowing with malevolence- why is his smile so creepy? Marina distantly thinks.. all the other monsters were odd and uncanny, but they all pass for well.. human if you don’t look at them too long. But not this red head, he’s just off. Familiar.
“I just want to spend time with you, can’t a husband spend time with his wife?”
The air goes stale as she stares at the- the thing. Wife? What kind of sick game is it playing at? Anger bubbles in her as it does nothing but smile widely like it’s something that she should already know, already accept while he gloats on her pain. Her fist hits the glass before she can really think about what she’s doing, but by then she doesn’t care. Her eyes dig into the creature- the freak!! As she bangs her hand on the glass, tears streaming down her face. How does it know about that? About her stupid dreams of being normal? Of having a family? Of having a husband and children and being happy? Before this horrid place stole that from her like it steals everything until there’s nothing left but sorrow and anger.
Her fists bang and bang and she screams profanities at it, the redhead monster having the decency to look shocked. The thing to break her out of her trance is hands- hands pulling her back. Tabitha. Marina gasps for air as Tim pulls the blinds shut as he speaks words that she can’t hear, her eyes land to the doorway to see a terrified Ethan and Julie, though Julie is obviously trying to hide it as she grips her brothers shoulder, quickly pulling him away.
A pang of embarrassment and grief hits her all at once as she leans against Tabitha who is trying her best to comfort her.
How did she let that thing get to her? She won’t- can’t let it happen again. No matter what.

A woman struggles on the ground, grasping at dirt as she tries desperately to run- to get away. Her legs useless as she struggles to get up, falling out from under her uselessly.
She has to get away. To tell the authorities- something!!
Distantly, she can hear the noise of a crowd, of the people she used to trust, love.. have a community with. She finally gets her bearings as the crowd nears, racing through the sharp and unforgiving underbrush, not caring how it slices up her ankles and tears at her clothing. She needs to leave, to help.
Suddenly, she feels a arm behind her, familiar but unfamiliar at the same time. How could you know someone your whole life without knowing what theyre truly capable of? To devote yourself to them and hold their hand before god, not knowing the true evil you stand with? She squeals and fights uselessly as she’s tugged to a chest,
“Get- get off of me!! I-I said get off!!!” She screams.
“Shhhh… mellow out, Nicole , babes.. you’re being hysterical,” Adam coo’s behind her, his wedding ring glinting in the light, hands stained red. “It’s just one quick slice, then eternity! Oh, darling.. didn’t you ask for eternity?”
Nicole glowers at him to the best of her ability as tears pool in her eyes, “not like this!!! You- you guys are monsters! Freaks! Inhumane! They are children-“
The last thing she sees is the moon, high above her. Providing just enough light to catch the harshness of a rock and for her lover to grunt out a quick, “you’re being childish, I just hope you know that, darling.” before it all goes black.
✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅๑┈•✦
Marina woke with a gasp, clutching her chest as her heart pounds. What the hell was that?!
She stands on shaky feet, clambering to the door as she pants. Marina needs to go. Needs to get out. Like something primal inside of her is clawing, itching, screaming. Marina barely notices the faint sound of grasshoppers outside as she shakily unlocks the door to the house, slipping out. For a minute she relaxes, the cold air doing wonders to calm her racing heart. Her feet move on their own as she strolls further from the house.
….”wait..”
Marina blinks, like she’s finally coming back to herself after some kind of trance. Looking around rapidly, all she sees are trees, reaching out to her with thin spidery limbs. Her mind briefly flashes to one of her dreams; yellow, an old man, fear.. Twenty days eight hours and twenty six minutes… A red head ‘saving’ her.
How long has she been trapped in this hell again?
Marina blinks that away as she tries to control her breathing, okay. She’s in the woods. Alone. At night. Okay, that’s not too bad! Totally not the worst scenario imaginable. Oh, who does she thinks she’s fooling?
Suddenly, she hears the sound of sticks breaking behind her. Someone is coming- or more, something. She runs faster than she ever thought possible, her feet pounding on the forest floor as she tries desperately to escape whatever monster is chasing her. She’s so focused on looking behind her, she doesn’t look to see what’s in-front of her, maybe that’s why she didn’t notice the flash of red before it was too late.
The red headed bastard grins as he holds her to his chest, she squeaks out a surprised gasp before fighting her hold, twisting and turning. Distantly she pulls parallels between this and her dream. Even more distantly the red head does the same. “Let go of me you- you bastard!!!” She screams, it’s no use and she knows it. She was caught. These things are probably gonna torture her to death and leave her body in some macabre position outside of the police station because these monsters have a penchant for tormenting Boyd but not killing him. She watches as the cowboy monster grins, like it’s a nice Sunday afternoon and not her final moments. He must of been the one chasing her, or more leading her to the red head. Like how a dog leads a sheep to the captive bolt.
Even that would be a mercy, really.
“Seems like you caught yourself a live one, huh? Reckon she always runs back in your arms, don’t she?”
The monster in a cowboys uniform drawls out, she can’t help but notice it seems a little… pointed. Friendly, sure. In the way all the monsters were ‘friendly’ to each-other, but more like he’s teasing with a hint of malice. The red head doesn’t look amused as he grips his nails deeper into her skin.
“Don’t start with this, William.”
The cowboy grins as he holds up his hands, teasing. Cruel. “Now, now. I ain’t mean nothing by it, Adam. But we both know that your old lady was once gonna be mine,” he bites back. The red headed monster- Adam? Stands up straighter with a glare that could cut steel.
“Now we both know, that she wasn’t ever yours. Just because she got a lunch with you one time doesn’t mean that she wasn’t on the make when she and I were together. You two weren’t ever gonna go steady, everyone knew that.” The words were cruel and if she wasn’t worried about being gutted like a fish, she would really think about how they were talking about her… or atleast some lady. Maybe that Nicole girl?
As the two banter.. or argue.. whatever! She looks for a way out, something.. anything! She ignores the shake of her body as she elbows the creature in the ribs.. or where they would be. He lets out an inhuman growl, but with that he loosens his grip on her enough so she can scramble out of his grip and deeper int the trees. She can hear the monsters behind her, but it’s fine because they can’t run. But they do sure sound close…
She veers off to the right and sees a tree, maybe she can hide in there? That’s what they did before the talismans, they hid.
She scrambles into the tree, the last thing she sees before it all goes black is the two monsters, staring at her with chilling looks in their eyes.

Her footsteps echo into the silent night, the trees bent and twisting towards her like they’re trying to drag her into their depths. In a way, she feels like they have. A chill runs down Marinas back as she hopefully goes the direction to get out of- or deeper? The woods.
The faint echos of crunching leafs in the direction she just came from causes Marina to turn around with a barely held in shriek. Who’s there? A monster? While she didn’t particularly think that the monsters all went to the town, she had assumed that they would stay closer to more… high traffic areas. Where people could come from. Like the road?
In hindsight, it was a stupid idea. Of course they would be in the woods!! That’s probably where they live!! Marinas eyes scan the trees, the furthest trees blurry, the fog and her naturally bad eyesight impeding her vision more than she would ever like at the moment. Suddenly, there’s movement!! Her eyes lock onto the figure and as it slowly breaks through the fog.. she takes a step back, then another.. and another.
The figure comes into view….and.. it’s no one she’s ever seen before. A elderly looking man.. in an oddly bright yellow coat. He looks odd… and terrifyingly close to that man in one of those paintings in that basement.
Of course.
Marinas breath hitched as they stare at each other, in a standstill. Her hands tremble as her mind screams at her to run, fight- anything!! But her body seems incapable of doing anything but watching. Who is this man? What is he? Is he the reason she’s out there? Why has she never seen him before if he’s a monster?
Before she could gain the courage to run, he speaks in a chilling voice. “Twenty days, eight hours and twenty six minutes.” her heart drops, confusion taking hold as she stares at him,*
“W…what?”
The man in the yellow jacket grins, his grin creepy in a way only an untrustworthy man can manage. Like he knows everything. Does he?
“Twenty days, eight hours and twenty six minutes.” He repeats. Marinas brows furrow as a dull feeling of anger strikes in her. Why does he just keep repeating it?!
…..
“That’s how long you survived last time.”
The last thing Marina sees is a figure tackling the man, a flash of red hair and long claws before it all fades to black.
✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅๑┈•✦
A soft melody plays through the dinner, Little Darlin’, a new release and a quick sensation. The woman giggles softly, her eyes tracing the red headed man sitting across from her.
She messes with the straw in her drink, the small town seeming so loud in this moment, everyone in the dinner, together. Kids running around, chasing each-other with loud giggles and yelps; adults drinking and gossiping about the latest dramas.
A sherif walks by, patting the man on the shoulder and throwing a grin over his shoulder, close. Together. A community.
Her hand bats away the red headed man’s when they try to grab her drink, glaring at him with bright, knowing eyes.
“Get your own, Adam!! You said you didn’t want one!”
The man’s grin widens, “oh, darling! Cmon! Can’t a man steal a sip of his own wife’s milkshake?”
✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅๑┈•✦
Marina wakes with a frightened gasp, sitting up with a hand clutched to her chest as her lungs desperately try to take in oxygen. The light coming through her… opened..? Blinds do little to stop the sun from bathing the decrepit room with a soft glow.
Marina runs a hand down her face as she throws herself out of bed. She’s barely out the bathroom before she hears a scream downstairs.
What the hell?
✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅๑┈•✦
The sun burns against Marinas back as she tracks up to the colony house, just the look of it sends chill’s down her spine. The house once a symbol of community, now serving as a grotesque symbol of how you can never be too happy in this town.
As she steps through the doorway, the smell of blood and fear hits her, clinging to her sinuses like a second skin. Gross. Marinas head flicks to the side, searching for Donna in the ruins- well, emotional ruins. They didn’t really hurt any furniture in the house.
“Hey Donna… came over as soon as I heard.. fucking bastards..” *i shift,* “do… do you need any help? Cleaning up or something?”
Donna stares ahead at the floor as she scrubs and scrubs and *scrubs*.
Marina takes that as a awnser, picking up a broom and starting to sweep up broken glass quietly.
….
“How do you think they got in?”
Marina wants to facepalm as soon as she says it. Who the hell asks that at a time like this?? Donna’s shoulders tense impossibly tighter as she sighs. “…someone let them in.. don’t know where. All just partying and having a good time and.. some fucking idiot left a window cracked or hell- opened it and boom. All hell breaks loose.”
She grunts as she scrubs harder, the brush creaking under the pressure, “lost fifteen good people. Fifteen. All because of those.. monsters.”
Marina opens her mouth to say something- anything! Comfort or something!! But nothing comes out and soon the moment passes. Curse her for never being able to speak at the right times.
“…”
The once filled colony house, filled with noise and laughter, fades into the faint sounds of scrubbing against hardwood and the scratching of glass against a dustpan.

By the time Marina gets home, it’s sunset. Boyd ringing the bell just as she walks into her room, old and dusty as it’s always been. She’s worried about it’s started to feel like home. Like safety. And safety is something you should never feel in a place like this.
She sits on her bed, facing the window and waits. And waits. And waits. Until, the red head thing comes up to it. However it gets up onto the roof. Maybe it climbs up.. or maybe it has sticky hands or something like a spider that it climbs with, she ponders as they lock into a stalemate. Her body screaming at her to run, to hide, but she ignores it. She wants answers and she’s gonna get them. One way or another.

In the still of night <3 (excerpt) Smile creature x original character
Chapter 1: https://www.tumblr.com/hannibalsdoll/797708847332687872/in-the-still-of-night-smiley-creature-x-foc
Warnings: cursing, violence
Paring: my OC marina x smile creature
Chapter:1.2/8
This is just an excerpt of the chapter I’m working on (yay!!). I’m super excited for Halloween and will hopefully have this out by then!!
✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅๑┈•✦
Her footsteps echo into the silent woods, the trees bent and twisting towards her like they’re trying to drag her into their depths.

In the still of night- Smiley creature x F!OC chapter 1/8
Chapter 2: https://www.tumblr.com/hannibalsdoll/800240648834940928/in-the-still-of-night
Words: 1,665
Reading time: 4-6 minutes
Warnings: creepy behavior, arguing family’s (it’s Jim), neglecting kids- kinda, Cussing
Summary: Marina had spent her whole life going by the books, not doing a thing out of line. So why is it that she’s stuck in this god forsaken town, with no way out and no hope? And why is this smiling freak always staring at her!!
Authors note:
Sorry if this is bad, it’s my first fan fiction in years!! I’ll get better as the chapters go on, hopefully. I wanted to do a x reader with smiley, because FROM does not nearly get enough love as it should, but decided doing a ‘OC’ would be easier for my first writing. This is NOT more accurate and I’m mostly making stuff up in terms of the lore behind the monsters.
This is also posted on AO3 as “In the Still of the Night<3” :3

It was a quiet night when Marina was woken up by a sharp feeling in her gut, like an animal being watched by a predator. A deep, primal feeling.
Her eyes opened with a little too much hesitation and fatigue; then she would enjoy feeling the way she did. The bed frame creaked under her weight, and the sheets clung to her in a way that promised warmth. She fought back the need to sleep for the more dire issue, her arm reaching blindly for the glasses she swore were left on the table right beside her just the day before. Her fingers finally connected with the cold metal, wrapping around it.
With her glasses finally on and her ability to see clearly returned, she groggily looked around the dark room. Marina had just arrived in the town a day or two ago, one of the "lucky" ones to come during the day. Marina barely had time to wrap her head around what was happening before the sheriff or not mayor-mayor of the town- Boyd, was it?-whisked her off into some placement ceremony. The choice between living with a bunch of strangers in a house on the hill or living with- well..still strangers but a smaller number of them-in the town felt like picking between two evils in Marina's humble opinion. How was she supposed to trust that the very people she'd share a home, maybe even a room with, wouldn’t be the same ones to steal her things? Or even worse, let in one of the monsters outside, allowing it to go to town on everyone in the home? She couldn't. She wouldn’t.
She chose the town. Being stuck in some small room in the Matthew’s house was better than faring it out with the horde the colony house fairs with. Even if Jim grated on her nerves, and the pairs daily arguing rang through the walls more than they think it does, they were a kind-if not dysfunctional-family.
Marina's eyes struggled to adjust to the darkness for a few minutes, blinking sleep from her eyes. When her eyes finally landed on the offender, just outside the feeble glass window were a pair of eyes. Striking blue. Animalistic. Though the eyes weren’t what set off a fire in her stomach and a primal fear in her heart, it was the smile. The wide, too perfect, inhuman smile. Like he already knew how this would play out, and he was just happy to enjoy the slow crawl to the end. He was... scarily familiar. She tried to justify it to herself. She couldn't have seen him before because he's simply not human. Not capable of leaving the town. As trapped as they were. But it didn’t stop the clawing at the back of her head, the primal feeling of fear mixed with the comfort of knowing who someone is, with the unsettlement with not knowing where you know them from.
He was staring at... her. That knowledge struck fear in her heart, just like it had the first night here when he came strolling up to her window just as she went to bed. She went to bed early after that, the sound of the bell a lullaby for her most days. But it was clear in her haste to beat the sun to sleep, she forgot to close the curtains. She almost felt disgusted that... that thing, no matter how familiar it felt , watching her sleep like some creep in a bad porno sent ripples of disgust and discomfort through her.
"Fuck..."
Marina's feet hit the floor with a soft thump; the socks on her feet did nothing to protect her from the freezing floor. Before she knew it, she was a few feet from the window, staring at the monster, or, well, his shirt. She grabbed the curtains, and just as she was about to close them, he spoke .
"Don't shut me out, Marina... you always shut me out.”
She froze , her eyes flickering up to stare at him. Did he just fucking speak to her? Of course, she knew they could speak, atleast objectively… But it had never happened to her, let alone saying her name!!
"H-how do you know my name...?" Her voice trembled; Marina tried to ignore how it cracked in the middle of her sentence. Her mind reeling. What does it mean she always shuts it out? Is it talking about the past two days? Why does it even care- let alone Remember!!
The thing just smiled back.
Marina took a deep breath, gathering her confidence. Ignoring her trembling hand as she spoke , "Don't ignore me, you bastard! How-how do you know my name?" She almost felt proud of the force she was able to put into her tone this time around.
She knew better than to ask questions, to even humor the thing. He said nothing the first time. Why would he say anything the second? Her thoughts were abruptly cut off when he spoke again.
"Don't you remember, Nicole? It shouldn't take long for the memories to catch up with you; I'm sure of it."
What the hell was he talking about? Memories? And who the fuck was Nicole? Marina racked her brain for any sign or memory of hearing or seeing a Nicole since she got here. She couldn't. The curtains slide shut with an audible click. Marina rolls her eyes as she slides back into bed, whatever ploy this was to get her to go outside, it wouldn’t work.
Fucking weirdo.

The redhead’s eyes stare blankly at the soft curtain barrier that separates him from marina. Sharp eyes tracing the worn fabric before he walks off. His worn, black Oxford shoes making soft clicks against the roof with each step.
If only she could remember, then he wouldn’t have to play this back and forth game every time.
His sweet Nicole.. why doesn’t she ever remember?
✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅๑┈•✦
The next time Marina wakes up, it’s morning. The distant sounds of the bustling family downstairs disturbing her from her already broken sleep. Staring up at the cracked ceiling with tired eyes, she finally gathers the strength to get out of bed.
The stairs creak softly under Marinas weight, glancing downstairs, she spots Jim and Tabitha at the entrance of the house. They seem to be having a private- and very heated- conversation; With Tabitha giving Jim a look that is becoming all too common now a-days in the house. Tensions are always high between the couple, but it seems like today it’s higher than usual.
Sliding past the couple awkwardly as she stalks into the kitchen, mumbling a good morning as she passes. marina smiles softly at Julia and Ethan as she enters the kitchen.
“Morning..”
The siblings reflect the sentiment as she ruffles through the cabinets for something to eat- or at-least snack on. To little avail. Sighing as she turns to face the kids. “Who wants to go to the diner with me? Maybe we can get in before the breakfast rush,”
Ethan lights up, a smile breaking out across his face. “I do! I do!” Tabitha has a soft smile on her face, offering her own, much quieter- approval for the idea. Probably more due to her parents arguing than an actual want for food. Marina smiles softly, pushing her brown hair out of her face with a sigh, “okay- okay! You’ve made your choice very clear. Go get your shoes and coat on, guys.”
Gosh she hopes she doesn’t regret this…
✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅๑┈•✦
The longer marina stays in the town, the more that.. creature visits her at night; incessantly knocking and speaking cryptic sentences that make no sense. And he’s always mentioning someone called Nicole- whoever that is. Not to mention Tabitha and Jim’s continuous arguing day and night- not to mention the newest addition to the town. A crazy man named “jade” who had spent the last week convinced this was a prank, and since figuring out that this wasn’t a expensive elaborate prank, has been set on “figuring” this place out and “finding a way out”. Hell, he’s even gotten Jim wrapped up in his crazed ideas.
Marina honestly just wants to have a full nights rest without distant yelling between thin walls, or the smiling freak tapping on the glass till sunrise like he was paid to do it.
Not to mention the unsettling nightmares she’s getting. Marina assumes it’s this places weird way of breaking her, if crushing whatever- albeit meager- hope she has left of leaving, or at-least surviving here comfortably. Or as comfortable as one can get in a town full of sadistic, mysterious, Humanoid monsters that may attack you at any slight mistake. The nightmares are.. brutal. But share two single things, she’s always in the town or in the forest surrounding it, and the red headed monster is always in them.
✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅⋯ ⋯⋅๑┈•✦ ✦•┈๑⋅๑┈•✦
When marina wakes up, she’s in the forest in what seems to be the middle of the day. The sun blaring above her like a silent clock, counting down the minutes until her safety of light replenishes. Letting whatever monsters that dwell in the darkness out upon her.
With a quick glance, she can tell she’s lost. Marina doesn’t go in the woods in the first place, it’s like asking for a death wish for one. All the monsters in the woods? No thanks. And she doesn’t have a very good sense of direction. The leaves crunch underneath her boots, echoing throughout the clearing.
There’s a thick fog surrounding her, making anything further than 20 feet in-front of her nonexistent. Shapes and figures dance in the distance, thick masses. She feels a shiver run up her back, her instincts on high alert. How the hell has she gotten here?
