Decided not to reblog a post with tags to avoid getting into an argument, but I just want to say that the post going around about how cozy modern AUs are a symptom of fascism is, I think, pretty condescending about the politics and critical abilities of the people writing these kinds of stories. I think that stories that feature escapism are not just a sort of uncritical, "avoid thinking about the bad things" sheeplike form of media consumption, and they actually reveal nothing about the politics of the people writing them. If anything, I think they could be a symptom of how awful things are in the sense that they reveal an awareness on the part of the media consumers about how short real life falls in comparison to what we want or know we should want. I just think it's pretty unfair to assume the political work being done by these stories is "let's think about and romanticize the good parts of capitalist worlds" rather than "what is it that we are being denied by the world we live in, and what might it look like to let ourselves imagine a world without that"—and yeah, maybe this isn't a deep, ground-up radical form of consciousness-raising, but it's also not the kind of lazy, uncritical media analysis that posts like these imply, even if they don't say it outright.
