Devil May Cry fandom isn't ready to hear this, but Lady hasn't allowed to exist as a dynamic character or do anything interesting since her introduction TWENTY FUCKIN YEARS AGO.
Like, I get it. She slammed into that story like a meteor, basically eclipsing either twin as far as pathos and complexity goes. She was hot as hell, and when the hero went to kiss her in an emotionally charged moment, she rolled her eyes at him. Lady was the shit in DMC3!!! She became such a fan favorite that she's appeared in more games and spinoffs than anyone but Dante. Yes, including Vergil.
And how has she developed across two more games, an anime, several novels, and two manga?
She hasn't.
While Dante was allowed to age, and change, even mature, she's stuck around as eye candy. While Reuben Langdon refined his performance, her voice and mocap actor changed up every game (along with her cup size). Her manga was canceled. Her personality slowly muffled into "spunky girl".
The most, THE MOST interesting things she's done have been:
act as Dante's information broker
flirt with Trish
The former has been pretty definitively given back to Morrison as of DMCV. As for the latter, like, yeah that's good. But also we already knew that Lady was a huge lesbian with mommy issues. That's the least they could fucking do.
And, like, as someone who is and always will be hyperfixated on this bitch, that kind of sucks actually! It sucks that she was so popular they couldn't not include her, but no one could be bothered to come up for a way to include her actual character, not just her character design.
So yeah, when Adi Shankar has a new idea for the character, I hear him out. And what I saw in that show was a story written by someone who cares about the character as much as I do. I see him setting her up to be a character with agency and dynamism across a much, much longer story. Are they exactly the same choices I would have made? Nah.
But at least he's fucking making them. :)
