Madness, Meaning and The Mad Movement. Why should you care?
Matthew Jackman, founder of The Australian Centre for Living Experience
and this is why itâs so much fun to center a journey around recoveryďżź, because to build those plot points to recovery you have to know what recovering actions and experiences look like and what they do, which means you yourself are furthering your own journey towards it.
itâs magic in action.
I always think about that one Judith Herman quote:
âTraumatic events destroy the sustaining bonds between individual and community. Those who have survived learn that their sense of self, of worth, of humanity, depends upon a feeling of connection with others. The solidarity of a group provides the strongest protection against terror and despair, and the strongest antidote to traumatic experience. Trauma isolates; the group re-creates a sense of belonging. Trauma shames and stigmatizes; the group bears witness and affirms. Trauma degrades the victim; the group exalts her. Trauma dehumanizes the victim; the group restores her humanity.
Repeatedly in the testimony of survivors there comes a moment when a sense of connection is restored by another personâs unaffected display of generosity. Something in herself that the victim believes to be irretrievably destroyedâfaith, decency, courageâis reawakened by an example of common altruism. Mirrored in the actions of others, the survivor recognizes and reclaims a lost part of herself.â
thatâs the story. those are all of its beats. thatâs my point A to point B and all the stations leading there.

Fucking Christ.
IF ONLY SOMEONE COULD HAVE FORESEEN THIS.
if only we knew that THE ONLY THING THAT GIVES LONG TERM SUCCESS is human connection and support. If ONLY WE HAD 30+ YEARS OF EVIDENCE.
So sad we don't know that.
I'm really fucking scared that these people went "well this is cheaper" and it caused physical and mental harm. I'm worried that suicide hotlines will also try this and people will die.
I wouldnât put it past those assholes to do this with the fucking intent of killing the poor!
@quixylvre that is very depressing and accurate. I wouldn't at all be surprised if that was their intent.
I'm terrified and unbelievably sad that they will do this again with intent and target marginalized groups.
After working hard for long hours and toughing it out, we at least expect success. However, more often than not, at the end of the day we ar
the basic emotional condition of capitalism is anxiety, fueled by insecurity. one of the most common, yet most effective, rhetorical moves used by the apologists of capital is to present this motive force as aspiration, rather than terror - that is, to disingenuously figure the motion of the system as a running-to, instead of a running-from. it is like if the camera were only ever positioned behind indiana jones, following him as he âaspiresâ to reach the exit of the cave, not once turning around to reveal the colossal stone sphere just inches from crushing him

Therapist: You said you were disappointed with life and how the world operates. What were your expectations?
Me:
Instead of âfight, flight or fawnâ it should be âhope, nope or copeâ
As a child were you the âIâm an alien and I donât understand human thingsâ neurodivergent or the âIâm not supposed to be here Iâm actually supposed to get whisked away to another world where Iâm the chosen oneâ neurodivergent
Doctors could name a disorder "Whiny Bitch Disorder" and I assure you that the reaction in the ND community at large would not be "what the fuck is wrong with the psychiatric field and how they think of mentally ill people, we should not allow that name and diagnosis", but rather "PSA: Please don't use 'whiny' and 'bitch' as insults, that's ableist against people with Whiny Bitch Disorder!"
The level of ignorance in the online nd community from people who parrot + aggressively defend the dsm is staggering ... to the point of accusing people speaking from neurodiversity movement perspective of denying the existence of difference/distress/disability đ¤Śđťââď¸
PSA the neurodiversity paradigm is diametrically opposed to the disorder/disease hypothesis actually. They are NOT compatible.
Disorder (and the DSM) is a subjective term rooted in neuronormativity and by default; colonialism, captialism and white supremacy. If disorder is the lens of the pathology paradigm, neurodivergent is the lens of the neurodiversity paradigm. This is why disorder and neurodivergent are not interchangeable and why, if we are aiming to be neurodiversity affirming and unpack neuronormativity, we need to move away from disorder; a term that reinforces neuronormativity and pathologises anyone who diverges from it. You cannot be neurodiversity affirming until you stop viewing people as having a disorder. If you can do it for Autism or ADHD, you can do it for every other neurodivergence. Disorder isnât neutral. Never has been.

can't help but think that a lot of the issues with how insular online communities conceive of neurodivergence stem from how the discourse necessitates the imagined existence of a mythic group of âneurotypicalsâ cogently and unambiguously free of the social knottiness that certain neurodivergences can entail (âall âneurotypicalsâ experience X,â âno âneurotypicalsâ experience Y,â etc) rather than understanding neurotypicality as an enforced social norm to which we are all expected to comply and fall short of to varying degrees
I have a friend who is a med student of neurobiology and she said that there really is no such thing as a "neurotypical" and the term is extremely unhelpful. There is no "typical," but there is an average, however it's very rare for somebody to embody that average. To put it another way, if one person has 4 apples and another person has 6 apples, the average is 5 apples, however neither of these people has 5 apples. And considering that the brain has millions of factors going on, it's unlikely that any individual would be average along every single one of those axis. What we consider "neurodivergence" is being outside of the commonly accepted range of deviation from the average. What nondisabled people think of as mental disability is when that deviation from the average impacts other people. What disabled people consider disability is when these deviations cause personal distress regardless of proximity to the average and would be distressing even with environmental changes.
She went on to say that even people who fall within that neuro average aren't the ones making the rules for what is typical, and unofficially dubbed them neuropowerful. Once people have power, they can impose their ideas as the standard regardless of whether it's the average or not. They're outliers whose experience (both internally and externally) has been allowed to set the standards by which many (even most) people fall short, even those close to the "average." The same is true for physical characteristics. If more than half the population is "overweight," who determined what the acceptable weight is? Because it definitely isn't *average* to the population. I know a lot of disabled and neurodivergent people flock to each other, but sometimes you realize everyone you know has some kind of major divergence, and nobody is in fact "neurotypical."
This isn't to say that all a "neurodivergent" person needs to be okay is a different environmental/cultural/societal structure. For some, ADHD/Autism are disabling, but for others, it isn't, even if it's the same level of deviation in the same environment. For me, personally, it's a bit of both. I would benefit greatly from shifting cultural expectations as far as being able to meet my obligations, but my ADHD would still hurt me in moments when I want to do something for personal enjoyment and executive dysfunction will not let me get off the couch. I would benefit from a world that is not so depressing all the time, but I would still have days when I struggle to get out of bed because my brain is physically not set up to do serotonin.
tl;dr, human brains are way too complex to fit into categories like "neurotypical," "neurodivergence" is simply a more extreme deviation from the average, and we do not even use the average as the actual standard of what our brains are expected to be.
Makes me think of the 99% Invisible episode about averages, and how they mess with our sense of what averages are.
This is why many in the community have come to prefer the term neuronormative over either neurotypical or neuromajority.
There are more neurodivergent people in the world (globally) than neurotypical people.
Why? Because the normative standard for neurology was determined by wealthy men in western culture. Autistic social theorists have called that normative standard neurotypical.
To codify various mental conditions, professionals sat around tables and voted on traits, classifying things as normal or abnormal, not by any actual scientific evidence but based on whether or not they personally possessed those traits.
The majority of people who exist outside of western culture would be considered neurodivergent because their neurology doesnât match that of the men who decided what was and wasnât normal.
Very very few humans actually have the predominant neurotype, and those humans are not guaranteed to stay that neurotype. Acquired neurodivergence from cumulative stress, trauma, injury, and aging happens all the time.
Neurotypical is the dominant or normative neurotype, not because of numbers but because of who has the power in our society.
Neurodivergent and neurotypical are actually not medical or biological terms. They are social justice terms. The purpose of these terms (according to the people who coined them) is to be able to discuss systemic power dynamics.
These words were coined for the purpose of naming who has the the power and who doesnât. Suggestions that we should stop using these terms because they donât describe a global minority/majority feel disrespectful to the activists who coined these terms and to the struggle for liberation that these terms represent.
