What do you mean? Environmentalists have been beating the "golf courses are ecological nightmares on multiple levels" my entire life! I had Ranger Rick comics about the harm caused by their pesticide use back in the 1990's.
Late at night
“The police spend very little of their time dealing with violent criminals—indeed, police sociologists report that only about 10% of the average police officer’s time is devoted to criminal matters of any kind. Most of the remaining 90% is spent dealing with infractions of various administrative codes and regulations: all those rules about how and where one can eat, drink, smoke, sell, sit, walk, and drive. If two people punch each other, or even draw a knife on each other, police are unlikely to get involved. Drive down the street in a car without license plates, on the other hand, and the authorities will show up instantly, threatening all sorts of dire consequences if you don’t do exactly what they tell you. The police, then, are essentially just bureaucrats with weapons. Their main role in society is to bring the threat of physical force—even, death—into situations where it would never have been otherwise invoked, such as the enforcement of civic ordinances about the sale of untaxed cigarettes.”
— An excerpt from Ferguson & the Criminalization of American Life by David Graeber (via actjustly)
since i think many will have had the memory slip with just how many other atrocities have occured in the past 11 years, or are simply too young to remember, the last bit about the sale of untaxed cigarettes isn’t just some hypothetical, it’s a reference to the killing of eric garner
this is the origin of the slogan “i cant breathe”, which was revived in the wake of the killing of george floyd.
On this day, 17 July 2014, Eric Garner was murdered by police enforcing a civic ordinance.

Being like. Post-suicidal is so strange. Like hiiiii everybody im new I spent a good chunk of my life languishing and have like 3 or 4 lived experiences. But now I'm ready to fuck and party or whatever. Can we be friends. Im so happy to be here. Can we be friends
One thing that is bothering me about some of the changes in The Vampire Lestat is that they remove Lestat's agency and recklessness.
In the books he doesn't pretend he's a human playing a vampire, he says he's a vampire and spills vampire secrets in his songs. Most people just believe he's a human cosplaying a vampire from a somewhat popular book.
He seeks out Marius for years, leaving various messages for him before Nicki's death and Gabriella's abandonment lead him to going underground. Marius doesn't dig him up because Akasha told him to.
And in the books Lestat goes to play his violin for Those Who Must Be Kept behind Marius' back, he knows it's a bad idea but does it anyway, he can't help himself. In the show Marius shoves the violin in his hands and tells him to play and Lestat says "I don't know how".
He does the concert because he wants to and because he wants the vampires to redirect their anger from Louis to him. In the show he's doing it for Gabriella. Even the hunting of the wolves in the show is pushed by Gabriella.
Book Lestat rarely thinks before he does anything and if he does the thought is "this is probably a bad idea" before doing it anyway. It's an aspect of his character that I really love and I miss.
Literally so many characters get their agency and complexity diminished in the show it's driving me insane.
Like just spitballing here:
Book Armand cuts off Nicki's hands to keep him in line, they changed that to Nicki self injuring bc Armand getting to be his violent and controlling self wouldn't fit with the uwu sadboi "friendless bottom twink sociopath" they wanted him to be in the show (they also took out Armand mutilating and experimenting on Claudia and Madeline, which I at first understood overlooking since iirc it was mentioned as a throwaway detail in TVA and not in IWTV itself but now it moreso looks like they're trying to make Armand look more uwu and helpless by taking away his more monstrous choices)
Book Marius chose to take care of TWMBK for 2000 years and very clearly found meaning and value in the duty, in the show he's reluctantly forced into the job and pushes it off onto Lestat after just ~20 years. Also like you said OP, he seeks out and exhumes Lestat by his own volition, not bc anyone told him to do so
Book Akasha wakes up when she does for her and Amel's own reasons, in the show it's bc Lestat's a bumbling idiot who feeds her blood (also idk where they got the TWMBK living on ashes thing but it's weird and I can't say I'm a fan lmao)
Book Nicki experienced depression his entire life and it was one of his core personality traits and the explanation for a lot of his choices (including moving to Paris with Lestat in the first place), in the show it's framed as 100% a consequence of vampirism driving him mad (and yes there is a parallel there in the book with vampirism making him first catatonic then extremely manic, but that was vampirism exacerbating his existing mental health issues rather than being the sole cause of them)
Hell even going back to the IWTV show, they took away Claudia's big moment of killing Lestat, one of the only major acts of agency she ever got to have in her short life, and gave it to Louis
Some of these (especially Armand and Claudia) I'm assuming were done to make the characters in question more palatable but ffs I don't want the monsters in my horror media to be palatable and idk why anyone would. I like TVC bc I think it's interesting to see monstrous characters choosing to do monstrous things and still make sense of themselves and their world, but the IWTV and TVL shows seem to have a Twilight-level discomfort with dealing with the fact that vampires are monsters I think they're weaker overall for it. Other characters (Akasha and especially Marius) I think they did this with bc the show was too lazy to spend the time developing nuanced, morally grey characters with mixed motivations. Nicki I think was just garden-variety sloppiness with regards to depicting characters with mental health, like they thought it would be flashier and more dramatic to see someone suddenly driven to madness, SH, and suicide then to develop a character struggling with a lifelong disabling mental illness and eventually succumbing to it due to compounding traumas
need to beam this tweet directly into everyone's minds right now
Tbh there is an overabundance of media about a nonhuman creature's deep desire and journey to become human, and so very few of the opposite
Many of those movies/shows are very good and I like them but the whole time I'm feeling like it's tragic in a way. The thought of a creature giving up its otherness to assimilate into humanity is really fuckin sad to me. Or a human getting the chance to be something else freaking out and rejecting it.
Just makes me feel all the more alienated, y'know. Like "damn why don't I relate to this allegedly universal enthusiasm for being human" and "why is the desire to be anything else always wrong"
I want more stuff where a human chooses to stop being human, and this is portrayed as a reasonable choice, and the person is happy as a result.
God forbid you find Gabrielle's life pre vampirism as sad as Armand's and Claudia's. God forbid you want someone who was raped most of her human life and forced to bear children (most who died at birth) to have an empathetic and complex portrayal. God forbid you care about a woman's pain outside of how it effects and defines the men around her.
Cant even say you think Gabrielle deserves a more empathetic portrayal that captures the complexity she had in the books without getting accused of defending grooming and incest....

gazing upon my dash in horror at all the posts praising the tvl adaptation for properly handling lestat being groomed and abused and how truly despicable and monstrous gabrielle is and realizing holy shit! rolin jones and his writing team really took a character who represents how the burden of living under patriarchal oppression can twist your desires and make inhumanity appealing and who, through vampirism, is able to break free of the roles of womanhood and motherhood in order to live purely as herself, and turned her into an incestuous sex-pest of a boy mom that everyone hates, effectively turning an entire generation of new fans against her character completely
and somehow i just have to live with that, somehow it’s not that deep and being pissed is an overreaction
I think the situation with Gabrielle/a is the perfect example of why introducing sex between vampires is a bloody mistake.
In the books, all the abuse and power play is on a psychological level, which doesn’t make it better, it makes it more complex.
The relationship between Gabi and Lestat in the book is infinitely more complex and interesting than in the show (just like Gabrielle’s personality as a whole). I get they’re making an adaptation and thus changing stuff, but they’ve completely erased what made her interesting.
I think if they focused on Lestat’s abandonment issues and lack of love and self love from the book would’ve been enough, but no, they decided to add incest and sex to just make it eeeeeveeeeen woooooorse, as if the first issues weren’t enough (they are).
Adding sex is depriving the relationship of what made it bad in the beginning because people only focus on the incest and how bad the incest is and sex and oh my god and- no, leaving a child you never cared for when he’s at his most vulnerable is enough, no need to moleste him to appear like a bad person. People need to realise that.
Banana Fish getting kicked off of Prime and immediately receiving 2 (!!) ACTUAL dubs feels like watching a friend get back their spark after a toxic relationship
I saw a post on a terf blog before I blocked it from someone being like "Ummm is anybody else really concerned about the rise of antisocial kinks like pissing" and it made me laugh so hard I almost did a little antisocial kink myself
The notion of pro-social vs antisocial kinks is itself hysterical to me. As though there's no way to be abusive and exploitative in an orgy, as though there's no way to achieve immense intimacy and care by peeing on each other. Nothing needs to be intrinsically anything. Everything is a function of the people involved. And like not to Devil's Sacrament you but how are you even measuring the relative growth of piss kinks at all, I NEVER see that shit
The best part about Gabistat is that Gabrielle lowkey isn't even like that into it, she's just kind of ambivalent, which means Lestat is still being emotionally neglected by his mother that he is literally in an incestuous relationship with.

If you read interviews with homicide cops, two things quickly become clear
It is really not all that hard to get away with murder. A basic amount of foresight and prep will get rid of enough evidence that the police either won't find the killer or will be unable to make the charge stick.
Despite this, most murders do get solved, because someone who decides that murder is the solution to their problems is probably not the kind of person to be levelheaded and careful enough to avoid getting caught.
I think something very similar is true of sockpuppet accounts. It's not that hard to make a convincing sockpuppet. However, people almost always make sockpuppets as a way of defending their egos, of making it look like they have more support than they actually do. And this passionate defense of someone the sockpuppet ostensibly doesn't know and has no reason to care about is a dead giveaway. So if you want to validate a sockpuppet you have to lose an argument to it. You have to get owned. Once it makes you look like an idiot, basically no one will ever suspect it again.
Unfortunately, by posting this, I've burned my only chance to actually do it. From now on, whenever you see me getting dunked on, you'll assume it's staged sockpuppet validation. and you'd be right. i have never lost an argument on this website. every single one was staged. i did not get owned. i did not get owned.
