the cruelty of healthcare bureaucracy lies in the fact that they won't diagnose you or treat you until you get a specific set of results. like you can show every indication of having a problem, even have abnormal results that suggests something is wrong, and have the symptoms of something being wrong - but the policy of the system is that they don't treat you without having the Specific Number they want. so you are quite literally forced to watch yourself deteriorate, and perhaps experience irreversible damage, until you hit the arbitrary threshold for "well now the problem exists" and suddenly your health issues magically become real. does it matter that everyone's bodies will have a different healthy baseline? no. abnormal results are ignored up until the point that they fit a specific, pre approved model. and honestly that is such a soul crushing experience to put people through

My cats are legit part of my grounding strategy for when I have sleep hallucinations. As part of my sleep paralysis, I “see” corpses in the bed next to me on a frequent basis, or shadow men lurking in the doorway; if there is a cat blissfully, softly snoring at the foot of the bed, I know I am safe, despite what my brain is trying to conjure.
