Writing Myths Busted

One common element whenever human beings gather is the need to talk and share experiences. Often that need turns into something a little more fun, a little more dangerous -- gossip. Gossip is often fun but it can also be dangerous because it spreads quickly (because it is fun) and often distorts or even completely avoids the truth. Gossip creates myths in many fields and professions, and the field of writing is especially prone.

The top five myths about writing are:

Myth 1: Writing is easy for some people. Let me tell you that is just about the biggest myth going. I have been a professional writer for going on three decades now. I also know many other professional writers of various ages, experience, and income. I don't know a writer that will tell you that writing is easy. Writing is brutal, hard work and there are times when I think it would be easier to simply open a vein as Red Smith said. However experience and practice can make many writing tasks easier. There are some writing tasks that I can almost accomplish on autopilot because I have written that specific format and/or topic a lot.

Myth 2: Writing requires talent. I won't lie. Talent can certainly help and talent is what separates the great writers from the good writers. But the truth is that talent is not enough to make a writer great or even good and talent is not a necessary requirement to be a good writer. Writing is a skill that can be learned, developed and honed. If you practice your craft, if you read the writing of others to learn more about your craft, and if you seek and accept guidance and suggestions about your writing then you will improve and grow as a writer. Dedication harnessed with talent can create amazing results but if I had to pick just one then I would go with dedication. You can always increase your skill level through dedication.

Myth 3: Writing isn't an useful skill. I have made my living as a writer for my entire professional life but even if you don't intend to make your living with words you will need this crucial skill. There simply isn't a profession that does not involve writing. Perhaps the form will vary, but written communication is the cornerstone in every professional field. Your writing ability will often impact landing a job as well as advancing in your career. Today written communication is even more crucial in professional and personal relationships.

Myth 4: You can't make a living as a writer. I can remember when I told my father that I wanted to be an English major in college. He was very worried that I wouldn't be able to support myself. The truth is that I have never had trouble finding a job and today I own my own business because of this flexible and important skill. Not only can you make a living as a writer but writing is an essential tool for many other careers and professions.

Myth 5: Writers block is alive and torturing writers as you read this. I'm not dismissing the difficulties inherent in dealing with writers block but whenever I talk with writers purportedly suffering from it they fall within two general groups. The first group actually creates their own block by insisting on the perfect place, mood, or alignment of planets in order to write. This is beyond ridiculous. One of the many benefits I gained from years of newsroom experience is the ability to write in almost any condition or mood. Deadlines will teach anyone how to give writers block short shrift. The second group I have more sympathy for as their problem really is internal in nature. Usually the problem is that the particular story (whether fiction or nonfiction) they want to tell is not yet finished cooking in their brain. In this case, while the writing may be stalled I don't agree that it is blocked. The writer must listen to that inner voice and respond appropriately. Sometimes the idea needs more time to percolate and sometimes more research and/or planning is necessary. Once the proper adjustments are made the writing will begin to flow again.

How To Publish Your Way  To Success

Did you know, self-publishing is one of the easiest ways tomake money on the web. Of course, it requires talent,but it's easier to learn than you might think.

Getting Started:

Choose a subject that interest you. Select asubject you enjoy or want to learn about.  As anexample for this article, we will use "Computer Tips."

Okay, next  collect the information to put in thebook about "Computer Tips".  A good idea to collect tipswould be to use your own knowledge, contacts, friends, onlineassociates, family members, even neighbors.

Contact everyone you know who owns a computer,ask them to share their favorite computer tips with you.

Tell them if you use their tip you will include their name in the book.

After several contacts you should have acquired a stack ofsolid information.

Now, it's time to start sorting the information andseparating it into categories. For example beginner tips,hardware tips, software tips, online tips, troubleshootingtips. Place each category into it's own file. Each of thesecategories will be the chapters in your book.

Next, begin composing your book on the computer.  Don't panic!

It's not that hard. Write a brief intro. Write your name andcontact information, any copyright information, a briefdisclaimer. Publishing date, origin of publishing.

Remember all those tips you collected. Select the besttips of the lot. Now break that down into brief chapters.

Now end the book with a pertinentending sentence or paragraph.  Your name, contactinformation and a link back to your website.

Now the book is ready to publish.. You've read everythingand checked for misspelled words or obvious grammar mistakes.

You are now ready to see the final result of your hard work.

If you publish online you will need an ebook creator, whichcould cost anywhere from $29 and up.  Or you might decideto search online with Google or Yahoo for "free ebookcreation software" and download.

Download the software and take it for a test drive.

Follow the instructions on setting up your files andpublishing.

If your ebook is less than 10 pages you might decide tocall it a report. More than 10 pages would classify as aebook.

Well, alright now. Let's sell that book and make a profit!

One good idea is to call all the people who offered you tipsfor your book.  Price the book around $20.00

Sounds like a deal! Especially for people hungry for helpfultips from a savvy computer expert like you.

Offer all the contributors a discount on your new book. Maybea 50 percent discount. Everyone who contributes would certainlylove to have a copy with their byline (name) included. This iscalled ego stroking sales tactics(works for me!)

Have a website?  Offer the ebook to all your website visitors.

Set up a sales page advertising your book along with orderinginstructions.  You will want to set up a shopping cart to handlesales. Or alternatively use a service like pay pal or clickbankto handle sales without the hassle of needing a merchant account.

Note: Although clickbank cost money to host your book you willattract affiliates who will  eagerly sell your book. Thistranslates to more profits.

Also, consider contacting ezine owners online. Offer them a freecopy of your book in exchange for advertising space in theirpublication. Visit online ezine directories and search for ezinesin a similar category as your book. Contact the editor withpertinent details.

It's amazingly easy to create your very own book online.  There's nohidden secret to publishing.  So called publishing guru's want youto think they have the answers or insider secrets. For most ofthose on the Internet the so called secret is just a good ideaand a way to reach targeted customers.

Every person reading this article has a book inside of them! Thinkabout it. Everybody knows something about a topic that other peoplewould pay good money to learn about. You can be sure!

10 Habits of Frequently Published Writers

Are you ready to sign off on your first project or publish more of what you have already written? Have you been wondering who will publish your work? The publishing industry is changing in the new millennium and doesn't appear ready to stop changing. It is estimated that in the next 10 years, 50 percent of all books will be self-published or published by smaller presses. Even so, it should not exempt us from the pursuit of excellence in our craft through sound writing rules and business etiquette.

With that said the way to more published writing credits is basically the same as Anne Wayman says, "Write well and write often." If you want to get published more by industry respected magazines and even enter into the competition for the attention of traditional book publishers, you may want to examine some of your writing habits. There are some habits those writers who consistently get published share. If you want to join the winner's circle of frequently published writers develop these habits:

Habit #1 Develop and maintain a strong sense of professionalism

Frequently published writers know they are not just creative artists. They know publishing is a business. They realize as a writer they supply a product to the publisher or directly to the customer. The writer that comes to terms with producing their writing as a product develops a professional attitude. He seeks to develop the most excellent product that will satisfy the demands of its consumers. The professional writer follows the basic rules of business etiquette. For example, they use crisp, clean paper for letterhead. They never handwrite letters or manuscripts. They always include a SASE with each query.

Habit #2 Write your best, always.

Unseasoned writers and those who lack professionalism always seem to be saving their best effort for later. Other writers who save their best for the next project often procrastinate themselves out of enough time to do a good job. Some feel the buyer has left them no profit, so they give them what they feel they paid for.

The solution though it may not be quickly is to always do your best. This practice works well with the universal law that says, 'What you give comes back around to you." When you continually give your best – the best is always coming to you – the best assignments, the best rewards, and the best credit. So write your best and expect the best.

Habit #3 Tap your passions and spread your joy to the world

Most writers who publish often are passionate people. They make the most of their passions through their writing topics. As many of you do, the author has varied interests. She has had to streamline and focus more than several times over the years. The greater the numbers of things you attempt to focus on the less effective you become.

Two of her passions have burned brightly in her life in the last decade her writing and web development business. So its no surprise her published credits line up in the writing arena and internet/computer category. Identify your passions and you will rake in the publishing credits. Your joy will be contagious with editors contacting you to publish your work.

Habit #4 Write compelling leads and hook your editors and readers

The lead often called the "hook,' because it hooks the reader – is the first few sentences or paragraphs of whatever you are writing. The job of the hook is to draw the reader in to read more.

Frequently published authors realize strong leads are not just for good journalism. Strong leads are for plain good writing. Use strong leads with everything you write, from non-fiction articles to good stories, from query letters to book proposals.

Use a compelling lead at the beginning of every chapter in both non-fiction and fiction. If you are writing an article, write a strong hook each time you transition to a new idea. A strong hook for an article may make the difference between selling it to an editor and not selling it.

There are different kinds of leads. Stories that set a scene or mood, startling facts, interesting statistics that spark interest are often components of a strong lead. The question lead entices readers to keep reading to learn the answer.

Habit #5 Develop Sizzling Titles and Headings

Successful writers sizzle their titles and headings. They know the title may well be 90% of the pulling power for their project. An excellent title is short. The best selling titles are benefit driven. Don't forget to heat them up with emotion. Use terms your audience can relate to. Use action words and verbs.

Quantify change with ways and time limits. Use one or two word ideas to tell a story. Pledge change. Spark interest. Instead of How to Write an E-book a client author chose the title Ten Secrets to Write Your E-book Like a Winner. She quantified change, sparked interest and branded her title.

Have a meeting of the minds with friends or associates. Let them help you choose the best title from the list. Find out which will make them want to read your project. Pinpoint the sizzling one and the same title may capture your editor's attention as well.

In the beginning, the acceptances are slow and sporadic for the successful and unsuccessful writer alike. But the difference is the successful writer keeps submitting. On a regular basic they see their work published because of their investment and persistence. Start with 1-3, keep submitting, and be persistent until you are invited into the winner's circle of frequently published writers.

Book Publishing Scams:  What Are They and How to Avoid Them

Are you an author who would like to get a book published?  If you are, and if you are currently an unpublished author, you may do just about anything to see your book in print.  As good as it is to have goals and dreams, it is also important to have knowledge on your side.  If you do not proceed with caution, you may find yourself falling victim to some common book publishing scams.

Unless you decide to self-publish a book, you should never have to pay a publisher to put your book in print.  In fact, it should be the other way around.  Yes, most publishers will take a percentage of the money that you make, but that percentage isn't even always talked about.  Most well-known publishers will either offer you a flat fee or an advance payment.  If royalty payments are decided on, a specific percentage will be agreed upon.

Individuals or companies who claim that you must pay to have your book published are likely just trying to scam you.  They are either after two things, your material or your money.  Chances are, your book may never even be published, but if you sign a contract, the individual or company in question may then own the words that you wrote.  For that reason, never, under any circumstances, should you pay a publisher to publish your book for you.

In addition to book publishing companies, it is also important to proceed with caution where literary agents and editors are concerned.  Editors are recommended, as they are likely to find grammar mistakes that you may have missed.  What you will want to do, however, is be cautious of who you do hire.  Never pay someone to read your book that you haven't heard of before.  Since you may not know many editors or any for that matter, the proper amount of research should be done.  Look for editor reviews online or ask other published writers for recommendations.

In terms of literary agents, the same amount of research should be done.  Did you know that many publishing companies avoid working with certain literary agents?  Those who do not properly screen their books or those that misrepresent their books, develop a bad name for themselves.  The last thing that you want is your name and book attached to a literary agent with a bad reputation.

As for the scams that are associated with literary agents, it is important to be cautious with pay.  A literary agent or agency that asks you to pay a fee upfront is a good sign of a scam.  This fee is often called a reading fee.  What you need to know though is that many literary agents take a percentage of the amount of money that you make when you sign a contract with a publisher.  In a way, this can serve as a guarantee that you will be receiving quality, guaranteed results.  Publishers who accept upfront fees may later choose to not accept you as a client or they may just take your money and run.

When looking to get a book published, the above mentioned scams are just a few of the many that you will want to keep in mind.  If an offer, a literary agent, or an editor sounds too good to be true, chances are it is.
