I live a very balanced life of noticing things nobody else does and not noticing the things that literally everybody notices

the way i don't get the like, specific type of anti-ai sentiment that manifests as people burying their heads in the sand, saying AI can't do stuff, and then endlessly and inevitably having to move the goalposts when they're some day wrong again. like. does it not just feel safer and more encompassing to assume that any time you're unsure about AI's future capabilities, the answer is that it will in fact some day be able to do the thing you're tempted to insist it never can. And I'm not even saying this in a pro-AI way, I'm just saying that this simply seems like the better option for covering all your bases. Because either you end up right, or you're simply wrong in a way you don't have to scramble to correct for, as opposed to getting embarrassingly blindsided by something you kept insisting was impossible. Plus, every time you eventually lose another "AI can't-" argument, that just emboldens and validates a bunch of the completely uncritical tech bro types, and weakens your position. And meanwhile, if you just always assume it actually might, this makes it easier to prepare, and be proactive rather than reactive.

it is impossible to watch a movie. every night i think i want to watch a movie. no movie gets watched. because it's not possible

and yet they keep making movies with the hopes that one day humanity will discover a way to watch them. it's so inspiring

i think people are starting to confuse class analysis with bioessentialism. like... no not all men do this, but Men as a constructed social class do do this. that's still okay to say. that is regular material analysis of the world around us.
