When somebody shares a quote by a famous author like it's something the author personally said and believed, but you know it was actually spoken by a character you're not supposed to like... 😐
one time I saw on Pinterest a cutesy little pink flowery image with the quote “‘as soon as I entered the house, I had singled you out as the companion of my future life’ -Pride and Prejudice” and like
ladies that is a mr collins quote 😭
My favorite example of this (not quite a character but a commonly misinterpreted quote) is Mary Oliver’s quote:
“He is exactly the poem I wanted to write.”
Often quoted as if it’s romantic. But here’s the thing
It was written by a lesbian. About a heron. She was writing about a large wading bird.
I used to occasionally stumble upon people on the Bad Bird Place tweeting the quote from Tigerstar about a Warrior suffering in silence with no context. Desperately keen to know if any of the hundreds of likes those posts got realised that this quote was from a) the bad guy who is b) a tabby cat
I lost this post for months and have been waiting for it to grace my dash again so I can add this wall art from the shop at Lyme Park (in Cheshire, where the ‘95 P&P filmed external Pemberley scenes, lovely place, go if you get the chance)
Yep lads it’s Miss Bingley
That fucking Bingley quote is on the British £10 note
Honourable mention to the "she called it the island as if there was no other island in the world" from Mansfield Park is on the Isle of Wight bus ads. The quote is Fanny Price's cousin pointing out how stupid she is
Damn, someone should take this Jane Austen chick to Lush if she loves Bath this much
finally found a pair of jeans that fit and went to go buy a second pair in a different colour in the exact same size but there is three inches difference in the waistband and the crotch is an inch higher
now the question is have i suffered enough that i will be reincarnated into an axolotl next lifetime or am i doomed to wander samsara via marks and spencers in human bodies for the rest of my incarnations
Thinking about the time when I was about ten and listened to audiobook cassette tapes to fall asleep.
For some reason, I only had chapter fourteen of the lion, the witch and the wardrobe.
For most people, I think that would ruin the story somewhat but BOY HOWDY did I enjoy listening to the ritualistic execution of a talking lion without any fucking context.
Eventually the movie came out and I realised that my favourite short story was actually part of a larger plot.
Has that been one of the greatest influences of my own writing and general tastes in literature for the rest of my life? Who can say.

7x3=21 is literally my favourite, has been since I learned it, look at her, gorgeous
had a dream that I met a wizard and we fell in love and became unhealthily attached to each other so we decided to meld into one single creature together but the process was horrifically slow and painful and most of the dream was us lying in bed holding hands while lesions opened up in our skin and seeped out blue and green fluid and the wizard said "this is going to take a very very long time" and I said "that's ok"
the critics are raving
My tiefling Durge: hello darling Astarion, I'm actually fluent in Infernal, do you need any help translating!? :3
Durge:
do you ever make a drink that is so bad
worst drinks I made in my four month tenure as a Starbucks barista
- a "secret menu" white choco kinder bueno iced latte that had so many additions I forgot to put the fucking espresso shot in it. Just iced milk with white chocolate and hazelnut syrup. My bad.
- one of those orange refresher things with an espresso shot in it. Had to confirm it with the other barista about four times. They're bad.
- not a drink, and I refused to make it, my coworker did. Fill up a small cup halfway with white choco sauce. The other half with pure caramel. Whipped cream. Serve with spoon. Bad bad bad.
"I really don't understand the hype over Astarion" I say to myself, thirty hours into the game when I'm suddenly blind-sided by the memory of one of my first ever crushes being Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer - maybe I do get it.

I just discovered that there was a person who was afab and ended up joining the russian army by the name of Alexander Durov in 1806.
Born a woman, Nadezhda Durova (birth name) ran away from home and joined a light cavallery regiment dressed as a man.
After his identity was uncovered, the russian tsar summoned him to the palace at St. Petersburg, where he impressed the tsar so much that he awarded Durov the Cross of St. George and promoted him to lieutenant in a hussar unit.
He always referred to himself as a man and was upset when people called him a woman.
He signed letters with his male last name.
He expressed feelings of disgust towards his sex and how that worried him a lot.
He never married willingly and adopted many dogs and cats.
He only danced with women when attending a ball.
He asked to be buried under his male name Alexander Andreevich Alexandrov but the church did not agree to that.
I never saw him in "historical transmasculine people" compilations and only discovered his story coincidentally.
Unfortunately, historians still adress him with female pronouns, although he did not want that.
Let's remember him together. We won't allow him to be forgotten.
I'll probably add onto this post later or make a better one but you can read a lot on this wikipedia article:
this is disrespectful
here's another good article about him
god the poor man. being more or less "out" to many people during his lifetime got him misgendered almost constantly, he made his feelings on the matter clear...and scholars still won't stop doing it
Aleksandrov was irate, writing to Pushkin “the name which you called me [his deadname], dear sir Aleksandr Sergeevich, in the preface haunts me! Is there no remedy for my grief? You called me by that name that makes me shudder, and soon 20,000 people will read it and call me by it too!”
pronouns and name expressed in life are the person's correct pronouns and name! respect them!
I bought his memoir the other day. It came with a piece of paper saying it's the review copy, looks like it's never been read. (1988, translation by Mary Fleming Zirin)
What a beautiful piece of queer history, that someone didn't even deign to review.
Pushkin published it, called the book 'The Cavalry Maiden' and rather than anonymising his name or using his chosen name (that he has the Tsar's permission to use), Pushkin used his dead name.
Id love an edition with a better title, the correct pronouns/some queer history introduction. Alexandrov's story really deserves to be told in his own words - with scholars supporting his own words as well.
I know the Goncharov meme is old now but I only learnt this on todays wikipedia excavation. When Alexander Pushkin first saw his future wife, Natalie Goncharova, he wrote these words:
Ah Pushkin! If only you could know, we were all goncharmed for so long
PS - if any Russian speakers see this, pls tell me whether the pun is just as shit in both languages
