Yes, The Blog Has Changed

So many people recommended this book so I decided to give it a shot.

I’m only two chapters in admittedly, but I’m having a hard time with just the writing style and the way that this story is being presented.

The writing feels choppy and stilted, and everything is being told to us exposition wise by the main character instead of being bought up naturally through conversation with other characters. I don’t feel like I’m being immersed in the world, I feel like I’m just being told a story and running through the details.

Furthermore, the FMC seems to have the perfect and most upright thoughts about common folk and the way the kingdom treats them, as if she was raised in a culture completely separate from the one she was raised under. Maybe this becomes relevant later on, but it feels like she doesn’t belong in her own kingdom in anyway, and while I can understand that might be the point, it’s so jarring to see that none of her privilege as a royal or culture within Tundrayn has stuck with her at all.

I’m gonna try to keep through it but for now, it’s very meh.

I know we all know the classic depiction of Odysseus and Calypso, but I’ve been thinking many thoughts about it.

What if Calypso’s only reference for marriage was Zeus and Hera, and so she figured Zeus’ dalliances outside of the marriage was just part of it?

What if Odysseus taught her adultery was not the correct way, and she realized her mistake?

What if Odysseus contemplated leaping from the cliffs of Ogygia, but stopped when he realized that both of them were trapped, and seeing him end his own life would scar her?

What if Calypso did everything in her power to help Odysseus enjoy his time there?

What if they cooked pineapple, built sandcastles, had foot races, fished, told stories, explored parts of the island?

What if they were friends, and when Odysseus was given the chance to go home, Calypso didn’t protest?

If she let her only friend, who struggled so hard and only wanted to see his family?

Because his happiness mattered more than not being alone?

It’s actually name is The Darkness Has Teeth, but I love the name Apolyocalypse for joke reasons
