And it sure as hell ain’t a shande far di goyim—they got collection plates instead of membership fees. Same problem, different solution.

I recall some people complaining about being required to pay membership dues a while back. And y’know what, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a few synagogues out there who are really shitty about dues, every group has its assholes after all. But I’ve lived all over this country, gone to many different shuls, and I have never encountered one that didn’t have negotiable rates for poorer members, complete with promises to keep such discussions private so that the members aren’t humiliated by asking for help. Hell, I’ve been one of those members, and all it took was a private conversation with the rabbi. And while events outside of regular davening usually charge for tickets, the price is always nominal, it’s clear that the charge is to cover expenses. How does anon expect a synagogue to function without money for expenses?

Any Shul, or Jewish organisation will have a means to negotiate if you're struggling financially but require continued access to services.
