also I don't think parents "these days" are uniquely terrible, I just think neglect is showing up in new ways as technology progresses. today's ipad kid would've been wandering around in a ditch alone all day and night before. parents not wanting to have to deal with children is not a new phenomenon.

Society hardly acknowledged that child abuse and child neglect existed until the 1960s and since then, they've blamed a new technology or drug or cultural thing for it every decade instead of just acknowledging that parents can be very shitty.

it is of course easier to performatively ban children from social media than to do things like "actually challenge and regulate the abusive tactics tech companies use to extract people's data and money via social media" but if we did the second thing we wouldn't have any excuse to force people to use digital ID :(

I literally wrote a final assignment on this for a master’s level uni course on which when asked by the lecturer who supports social media age bans in Europe all but me raised their hands and I felt like I was going crazy, the lack of critical thinking 😫😫😫 When I challenged the teacher on putting the onus on the children and the irony of appealing to child safety while introducing biometric/surveillance technologies her reply was ”well we already live in surveillance capitalism”. So… because it is here it cannot and should not be fought. This is my Roman Empire. This course. This class. This topic. People. Stupidity.

we seriously need to stop conceding to the personhood trap when it comes to abortion rights. is a fetus a person? thats a spiritual question. i dont care about the answer. should another person dictate what someone can do with their body? simple answer: no.

Also, whether or not a fetus is a person, the person carrying it certainly is!!
