This #PinkShirtDay, I present to you a #nofilter #selfie. I have been bullied my entire life by family, friends and co-workers. Growing up is hard and can be especially difficult when you are an overweight woman who doesn't really fit in anywhere. I was always too loud, too enthusiastic, too big, too energetic and all around too much. So, over the years I practiced being less to please other people. #Bullying affects you on many levels and continues to hurt based on how much emphasis you give it. And, I have learned to stop giving it emphasis in my life. Each day is a new battle against letting the hurtful words of others destroy my bliss and some days, I win. On days that I lose, I am here to tell all of you that it's not easy but survival is important. Pink Shirt Day started in "Canada in 2007 when two students {David Shepherd and Travis Price) took a stand against homophobic bullying after a new year 10 student was harassed and threatened for wearing pink." "David and Travis bought dozens of pink shirts and distributed them to their male classmates to wear the next day. The word got out online and hundreds of students showed up in pink, some from head-to-toe, to stand together against bullying." If these students didn't a stand against bullying, every person who wore a #pinkshirt thereafter might have missed out on the chance to be seen, heard and understood by their peers. I believe that I can get farther by cheering on my peers and showing my support for others than I would if I stayed silent. Those of you out there looking for an answer, I don't have a single one that is universal and works for every situation. I wish that I did. However, what I can say is that I will always be your cheerleader and if you make it one more day than you thought you would, I am more proud of you than you'll ever imagine.
