AGAIN, THIS IS A PROBLEM.

As another post put it, when Dead Kennedy’s found out they had skinhead fans pushing Neo-Nazi ideals upon younger, impressionable fans, they wrote a whole song blasting those skinheads and trying to push them out of the scene and inspire others to do the same. This guy’s response of “I’m sickened to hear my name uttered, I’m so sorry to the victims” is utterly pathetic and missing the point. The key message in that Tweet is “I’m upset he used my name”, and is all focused on HIM and HIS feelings and takes no effort to address the issue at hand and tell his fans that he doesn’t approve of that shit and that fans who do can get fucked. Like no one gives a shit about your feelings dude, because your feelings don’t fucking matter. I used to be active on several 4chan boards like back in 2012-2014, around the time the Alt-Right and Incel movements really began to take shape and spread to other sites. I made friends with people who weren’t very political at all, and I watched them become gradually radicalized by /pol/ and /r9k/ through “jokes”. These people intentionally hide their bigotry in jokes because it’s much easier to promote a message through subtle mental conditioning than by outright telling people what to believe. About a decade ago, I used to say that the whole “furry hate” thing started out as “Haha these people are weird we’re going to joke about how weird they are” to people taking those “I hate furries” and “furf*g” ‘’’’’jokes’’’’’ at face-value because of how there’s no tone or emotion in things on the internet so the line between shitty edgelord jokes and actual belligerence is blurred, and you went from people laughing at a subjectively unusual subculture, to people literally tazing, gassing, and pushing fursuiters off catwalks at conventions. It’s the same thing– “edgy humour” was commonplace during the influential years or a lot of Millenials and Gen X’ers, but it’s basically become a gateway drug for people who actually hold bigoted beliefs to push their agendas– when you hear a stereotype enough times you begin to take it as fact. When you hear a slur enough times you might not really think of it as a slur. There’s this prevailing notion from emotionally stunted jackholes like these Youtubers that “”comedy is dead” and everything is too PC; that they can’t joke anymore because everything is ~so offensive~ when really it’s just like… no, you’re just not as witty and respectable as you think you are. They exist in these tiny little internet bubbles where they can spout nonsense to a bunch of yes-men and are completely immune to any personal accountability because no matter what they say, they have a swarm of people stroking their egos instead of holding them to task.
