I was told that I’d get used to not having a headphone jack. I still want a fucking headphone jack. I hate that phones don’t have them. It’s stupid and awful and I hate it
I think my issue is that I spent a lot of time this past week with friends. Like I was doing things with people after every work day and on my non-work days. And I got tired and instantly felt really lonely. It’s that thing that happens when you have too much fun without a cooldown, I think. Whatever it is.
Sunday was just work and rest, Monday was 2 movies in theater with four friends (after work), Tuesday was DND (after work), Wednesday was my roommates birthday (after work), Thursday was the furniture store check-in on my couch (after work), Friday was another meeting about my comic and then a third movie at the theater (no work), Saturday was art club (also no work), and more was meant to happen but I stayed home. And then I got SAD. I think it’s not really anything bad, like just unbalanced emotions after seeing friends and family literally every day last week except Sunday. Now it’s Sunday again.

I made 20 bracelets in 2 days but I need to be working on some drawings. Any drawings. My lines are unsteady again but I just need to work through that
Hello! I would like ask for some art advice if you don't mind.
Recently I've been experimenting with my style a little and I've done some monochrome portraiture, so I decided to give it another try today, since I was quite happy with the result last time.
I picked this reference from pinterest. The original was in color but I prefer to turn the picture in b&w to get a better grasp at the values
I do my sketch
And I was pretty happy with it here. Sure, it doesn't look exactly like the reference but none of my portraits do despite my best attempts🫠 So I outline with a blue pen, fill in the darkest areas with a blue marker (like her eyes, her hair, her nostrils, the cast shadow on her neck and at the jawline), shade with a blue pencil and...
And I'm not so sure about it anymore🫠
In my opinion it doesn't look like the reference at all. That's a whole other person to me. Plus I'm not sure about the contrast here, if it needs stronger shadows and highlights. I initially laid down a light base layer and attempted to work my way from dark to light, but for some reason it was turning muddy/blurry, so I laid down a darker base layer, worked on the shadows and used a kneaded eraser and a pencil eraser for the highlights. I do think I did a good job differentiating the planes of the face but that's about it. In my opinion it looks good only if you don't know what the reference looks like (which can be said about pretty much all my portraits). What do you think? Do the shadows ans highlights need more work? Shall I work on the contrast? Did I completely butcher the resemblance with the shading or was the problem starting to arise way earlier? Do you have any tips on how to make the technique work with darker skintones? And if anyone else has some advice too I'm glad to receive it.
Thank you in advance for the help and I wish you, Mr.CBC and Jojo a wonderful sunday.
This is gonna be a question for the Real™ artists- this is not something I can answer! As for why she doesn't look the same, I mean you just didn't draw the same face, but to me you did everything else just fine!
@roses-without-raindrops So many people have already given advice already but to elaborate what I was meaning when it comes to some of the shapes, I’ll use the eyes as an example.
Here I drew a comparison of the shapes between the two images. It really is a very small difference! It does feel like the eye shapes you went for are the slightest bit more symmetrical, which evokes a “forward-facing” feeling, even if the eyes are looking off screen and the placement for everything else is perfect. The eye shapes you drew are just a bit more weighted to the center than in the image, which makes them symmetrical! But in the photo itself, those symmetrical shapes become a bit more warped from perspective. I think probably the biggest detail I’d worry about fixing is that I saw you included slightly more of the eye on the right than is visible in the photo, which adds to the “front facing” feeling, or makes the drawing feel a bit more flat. Overall, I think you’ve done great, though! Hopefully this helps? I’m not an expert in teaching, but this is the way I think about shapes to break a drawing down into easier steps.
Transphobia is about to be signed into law in the UK. We can fight this.
I am begging the UK trans community and its allies to attend the Mass Lobby at Parliament on June 25th, 11am-4pm, organised by Trans Solidarity Alliance.
Last year we broke the record for an LGBT+ mass lobby of Parliament. Will you help us break it again? Join us on 25th June 2026 to demand be
The new EHRC Code of Practice pushes trans people out of toilets, hospital wards, and community spaces. It normalises gender policing based on appearance and stereotypes. It becomes statutory guidance in the UK by the end of June.
Trans people are now legally their assigned gender at birth and must join gendered spaces accordingly, but if they are perceived as their lived gender, they can also be ejected from those spaces. The guidance says: either break the law, or don’t pass too well.
A mass lobby is where you invite your MP to discuss your concerns with you in-person. Ask your MP to:
Demand full parliamentary scrutiny, debate, and use their free vote on the EHRC Code of Practice.
Support any motions rejecting the EHRC guidance. As of June 4th, Labour MP Nadia Whittome has submitted a prayer motion - Early Day Motion 240.
Write to Bridget Phillipson, the Minister for Women and Equalities about our concerns
Your MP does not have to be an ally, they do not have to respond to your email for you to show up and greencard them (details below the cut.) What matters is that as many people as possible show up.
I cannot stress this enough: Showing up in person matters. It is much more effective than petitions, emails, and letters.
It is a horrible, stressful time, and I am so sorry if you're trans and live in the UK. But I was at last year's mass lobby and the line for greencarding alone stretched around the back gates. It was a record breaking mass lobby and made us impossible to ignore. Let's do even better this time. Details under the cut:
Worried about what to say?
Bring your personal worries about transphobia being signed into law, and trans friends being excluded from public spaces. You are a living person who deserves dignity. Remind your MP of that. You will also get guidance and brochures from Trans Solidarity Alliance that outlines our demands. This is mine from last year.
Money issues?
Trans Solidarity Alliance provides a travel bursary that you can sign up for via the link.
Got a refusal or no response from your MP?
Come anyway! You can request a same-day appointment with your MP through a process called greencarding. They will come and see you if they’re already in Parliament. Even if they don’t, they’re made acutely aware of your cause because you showed up in person. This is my greencard from last year.
Here is the EHRC Code of Practice in full. It's a tough read, but some highlights are:
Organisations can’t provide trans-inclusive, single-sex services, or they risk being sued for discrimination.
e.g. domestic violence support for women including trans women, men’s rugby group including trans men (12.68).
Trans people will have nowhere safe to pee.
If you’re a trans man, businesses can't allow you to pee in the men's, and you can also be ejected from women’s bathrooms if you’re perceived as a man. Vice versa for trans women. EHRC suggests a ‘third space’ bathroom, which is discriminatory and unworkable for most businesses. (13.130-133)
Sports organisations must exclude trans people from single-sex competitions (13.73).
A women’s only sports competition must exclude trans women because of their biological advantage or face potential lawsuits (13.74), but a trans man who has undergone testosterone treatment can also be excluded based on fairness rules (13.81).
Trans women are stripped of the legal definition of ‘lesbian’, and therefore no longer have legal protections if they’re discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation. (2.50, 2.92).
Here is the Good Law Project's better explanation of the EHRC Code.
I have also made a PDF printout of QR codes for the government petition, email your MP tool, and mass lobby link to pass around your communities. DM me and I'll send it to you.
