Welcome to the world, white buffalo. Come through.
@wavy-arms !!!
Wow… I’m not Lakota, I’m Diné, but… I’m seriously in tears right now. The other day, I saw an eagle soaring in the sky above me in a place where I’ve never seen an eagle before, and now this. I have this overwhelming feeling like everything is going to be OK. We’re all going to get through this. Things are going to get better. We can do this.

Controversial Truths About Ancient Egypt Masterpost
The pyramids were built by contemporary workers who received wages and were fed and taken care of during construction
The Dendera “lightbulb” is a representation of the creation myth and has nothing to do with electricity
We didn’t find “““copper wiring””” in the great pyramid either
Hatshepsut wasn’t transgender
The gods didn’t actually have animal heads
Hieroglyphs aren’t mysteriously magical; they’re just a language (seriously we have shopping lists and work rosters and even ancient erotica)
The ancient Egyptian ethnicity wasn’t homogeneous
Noses (and ears, and arms) broke off statues and reliefs for a variety of reasons, none of which are “there is a widespread archaeological conspiracy to hide the Egyptian ethnicity”
The carvings at Abydos aren’t modern machines but recarvings over old carvings. Sure they look like them but if you can read hieroglyphs and know that Ramesses II will even usurp the carvings of his own father just to be a little shit
‘No soot on the ceilings and walls of the Dendera temple!’ is actually because of extensive restoration works and not because Egyptians were in on shit like Baghdad “batteries”
While the Egyptians were fine-ass astronomers they didn’t align any of their enormous and/or important buildings to modern star constellations, because constellations look very different now than they did ~5000 years ago
The pyramid is the simplest, sturdiest shape with which to build and many different cultures discovered this in their own time. There were never any weird fish humans/aliens involved
The sphinx of Gizah is only an approximate 5000 years old; the 10,000 year/rain erosion nonsense is proven hokum
Speaking of that particular sphinx, the Napoleonic expedition is not responsible for its missing nose
Akhenaten was not a “heretic” by contemporary standards
Ramses II appropriated a lot of his predecessors’ buildings/reliefs and isn’t really deserving of the epithet “the Great”
The Battle of Kadesh ended in a stalemate (twice)
While they had feline deities throughout their history, Egyptians didn’t actually worship cats themselves. This was a later Greek/Ptolemaeic addition
It was not, in fact, practice to shave off eyebrows after cats died; Herodotus lied about that
Herodotus lied about a lot of things and many misconceptions about ancient Egypt can be traced back to his Greek ass
I can’t believe I forgot my favourite Hill to Die On
Seth was not the god of “evil”, and despite his chaos providing a foil to order, he wasn’t completely villified until very late in Egyptian history, when he became associated with despised foreign enemies
Hats off to the few of you who’re reblogging this with tags saying you’re going to check my claims later. You make me not entirely despair of this hellhole.
Here are some vetted Egyptological books/sources (that are by and large appropriate for a lay-audience) you can find most, if not all of the above:
Lehner, M., The Complete Pyramids
Wilkinson, R. H., The Complete Temples of Ancient Egypt
Hornung, E., The One and the Many: Conceptions of God in Ancient Egypt
Dunand, F. & Zivie-Coche, C., Gods and Men in Egypt
Kemp, B., Ancient Egypt: Anatomy of a Civilization
Bard, K., An Introduction to the Archaeology of Ancient Egypt
Stevenson Smith, W., The Art and Architecture of Ancient Egypt
Kitchen, K. A., The Life and Times of Ramesses II, King of Egypt
Sweeney, D., Sex and Gender (in Ancient Egypt)
McDowell, A. G., Village Life in Ancient Egypt: Laundry Lists and Love Songs
Te Velde, H., Seth, God of Confusion
Guys do me a solid and reblog this version instead of continuously asking for sources on the other versions thanks

New species of early human discovered near fossil of ‘Lucy’
Australopithecus deyiremeda lived about 3.4 million years ago in northern Ethiopia, around the same time and place as Australopithecus afarensis.
Welcome, Lucy’s neighbour. Fossilized jaws and teeth found1 in northern Ethiopia belong to an ancient human relative that researchers say lived around the same time as Lucy’s kind, Australopithecus afarensis, but is a distinct species. The remains of the new species, which has been dubbed Australopithecus deyiremeda and lived between 3.5 million and 3.3 million years ago, were uncovered just 35 kilometres from the Hadar site at which Lucy and other A. afarensis individuals were found. Fossils from A. afarensis date to between 3.7 million and 3 million years ago, so the two species would have overlapped (although Lucy herself may have lived too recently to see one).
The find suggests that several distinct hominins — species more closely related to humans than to chimps — roamed eastern Africa more than 3 million years ago. A third species, Kenyanthropus platyops, lived in what is now Kenya around the same time2. “The question that is going to come up is which taxa gave rise to our genus, Homo,” says Yohannes Haille-Selassie, a palaeoanthropologist at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History in Ohio, whose team reports its discovery in Nature1. “That’s going to be the 64-million-dollar question.”

Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe
Our Lady of Guadalupe can be seen as a symbol, not just as a saint in Catholicism, but as a symbol of Mexican Catholicism in New York City. As a result of immigration, Mexican immigrants reshaped many of the Catholic spaces and churches themselves in NYC. Side note: different populations within the Catholic community have been known to favor certain saints based on what they symbolize to them. This can be seen be the numerous images of the Virgin of Guadalupe displayed in churches all over New York City. She is often called "the Mother of Mexico" and is said to be the patron of the poor, weak, and oppressed. It makes sense that she would become an important figure to the largely marginalized group of people. She embodies the idea that all people are equal in the eyes of the Mother of God and that people are watched over and loved by a divine motherly figure. She is often associated with Tepeyac, a Mexican Catholic immigrant organization that advocates for immigrant rights, services, and legalization.

By definition, a "bruja" is the Spanish word for "witch." Some people draw similarities between modern witchcraft and brujería, but to the practitioners of the latter, the two are very different. Brujería originates within the mixed populations in the Caribbean and Latin America, referring to different spiritual practices in their heritage. Many different separate religions across the diaspora are considered to be brujería such as Vodou and Santeria.
The rituals of brujería (which some would say are brujería itself) are generally passed down from the previous generation. The origins of brujería can be looked at through Afro-Latinx roots through the unification of African, indigenous and some European communities through the experience of being marginalized. Around the 16-th century, many women began to use brujería as a means of balance. When men would abuse their wives and have affairs, knowing that they would get no help from the judicial and religious systems, many brujas turned to brujería to help their situations. Still, due to colonization, brujería became stigmatized in society gaining the stereotype of the "evil enchantress."
In contemporary society, many brujas try to change the public perception of brujería. This has resulted in the controversial popularizing of bruja culture, which some result modern witch culture being a mix of bruja practices. Many young people can be seen claiming brujería as an integral part of their culture, seen by icons like Beyoncé in her tribute to Oshun and a music video by the Afro-Latina rapper Princess Nokia, titiled "Bruja." Everyday brujas themselves say that brujeria isnt something that can be learned from a book, but is taught through oral tradition from family to family, further solidifying authenticity.

Tibetans Under Pressure
So not many know this but there been a lot of problems around the Chinese-Tibet boarder. Around the 1950s, the Chinese invaded Tibet and incorporated it into greater China under the guise of "peaceful liberation" (which is considered by most to be imperialist occupation). By the end of the decade, the Dalai Lama fled Tibet to Dharamshala, India with 80,000 Tibetans to follow, effectively creating the Tibetan Diaspora. (and some of the most interesting resulting cultures, please read Tibetan Diary).
Within the original Tibetan lands itself, the Chinese government has been using the existence of Buddhist monasteries in Tibet in order to profit. They use these monasteries to promote Tibet as a tourist destination. Some monasteries have been forcibly changed in order make more space for more touristic activities like restaurants, hotels and shops (which I believe are discouraged by the religion). In addition, many ethnic Tibetans wish to return to their original homeland as a pilgrimage, which is not allowed under the laws of the Chinese government. In a way, the Chinese government has taken a culture hostage.

Donuts at Hanukkah
So I ended up posting some fan art of Jewish characters from the MCU on my snapchat, and a friend made a comment about how the artist even included jelly filled powered doughnuts.
I thought that was pretty interesting so I did some extra digging. The original tradition of eating sufganiyot (a food similar to a fried jelly doughnut) comes from the miracle of the associated with the Temple oil of Hanukah, hence eating the fried food. As the practice spread out of Israel, the custom changed. Originally from the Jewish communities in New York City, many people have taken to purchasing doughnuts due to the similarities between the foods. According to the New York Times, "… at West End Synagogue on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, families attending a Hanukkah party gathered around a menorah, dreidels and piles of Krispy Kreme doughnuts" (Moskin, 2005). In addition, some Dunkin Donuts in New York have started selling the traditional donuts in their stores, mostly within Jewish communities. This just goes to further show how movement really changes cultures.
