A chapter I'm reading for my comps exam mentions El Tio and perpetuates the conflation of him with the Devil. I am incensed and am caught between the need to correct this in my weekly literature review and knowing that if I do, I will have to explain to my committee member why I know so much about chthonic death deities.

It’s so crazy to me that I’ve really finished my first year in my PhD program. I’m interning at a national museum working with Indigenous belongings that have quite literally been forgotten about by the institution and it’s my job to bring them back into the world, possibly reconnecting them with descendants. This is what I live for and I’m ready to defend it.

Hi! I’m a Belgian/Flemish archaeologist (and art historian specialising in Dutch Baroque)!

I did my thesis on the importance of animal mythology in everyday Early Medieval life (Merovingian, Anglo-Saxon and Vendel/Viking). This went from dress/textiles to cookware, woodwork, mythology and animism to intercultural relations.

I’m working half-time as a field archaeologist in Flanders, studying Heritage as a second masters degree part time as well!

I specialize in the Late Formative to Classic period (300 BC - 550 AD) Teuchitlan Culture of the Tequila Valleys of Jalisco, though I do have a background in Maya archaeology. I am working on my PhD while also working full time at a state SHPO office. My research focuses on architectural energetics, labor organization, remote sensing, and GIS.

I try and post a Mesoamerican artifact daily. In addition, I try and share interesting or important Mesoamerican news. Occasionally I make and post memes about Mesoamerica.

I know it’s been a while. I’ve been taking a break from all social media as I adjust back into grad student life.

So funny story, one of my assignments this term is to make an anticolonial archaeology meme. My prof spent 40 minutes trying to explain to other students what makes a good meme. And I’m just sitting there wondering when I should tell him that the example is actually a screenshot of merch I made.
