i kind of dont post here bc veilguard killed my desire to engage w dragon age bc of how dogshit it was but its actually insane to me how veilguard sucked solas' dick straight through his jorts for the ENTIRE game, and solas fans still cry about how victimized they are and how victimized solas is by the writing. im sorry but none of you would last a day as a fan of any female character in any of the games in the franchise
no matter how weird or bad of a time you're having remember there's always someone in the dragon age fandom choosing to fight battles and die on hills that are stupider and more vitriolic than you can even imagine
it feels like it should be good to think about alistair learning he has family in fiona who did/does love him but it has to come with the context that she knew duncan and from there it gets very bad very quickly for him
it just poisons everything he holds dear by making it immediately obvious that his recruitment into the wardens and duncanās affection for him was also about his family and not him. like everything else. did you know that alistair was recruited after a tournament he wasnāt supposed to be included in, but duncan insisted, and then alistair didnāt even win and was as surprised as anyone else there to be picked. duncan just told him it was because he was seeking not the winner but āa warrior of characterā, and theoretically it could even be true, but come on. after finding out who his mother was how could he ever believe it again
newly recruited alistair in a letter to eamon from world of thedas: ā[the wardens] donāt know anything about me, where i come from, and they donāt care. duncan said i was worthy, and thatās all that mattered. i thought the man must have been insane to pick me out, me of all people, but now... now i donāt know. they say iām learning fast. [...] for the first time, iām a little glad you kicked me out.ā and his lines to the warden about how he kept his heritage secret from them because he wants so badly for them to like him for him. it matters so so much to him with duncan and affects his whole identity and purpose as a warden and it would be so crushing that it was never true. VERY SICK!

thinking about this for no reason at all. genuine question why would this ever be okay
with the disclaimer that this is an imperfect way to measure these statistics: here are the ao3 category breakdowns for each dragon age when you filter out the character tag for the protagonist.
dragon age: origins (left) & dragon age 2 (right)
dragon age: inquisition (left) & dragon age: the veilguard (right)
the ratio of f/m to f/f fics here breaks down as 3.6 to 1 for both da:o and da2, 3.2 to 1 for dai and 6.5 to 1 for datv. besides which you can see across the board that the f/f has category fewer fics than the f/m, m/m and genfic categories in Every Single Game.
genuinely this fandom sometimes makes me feel like we all need to go back to english lit basics.
a character is not a person. i know, thatās your blorbo, thatās your guy (gn), thatās your sweet cheese. or alternatively maybe thatās your beloathed, your nemesis, your sworn enemy for all eternity. but what they are in reality is a Storytelling Device. they are there to tell you something about the Setting and the Themes.
vivienne dragonage is not pro-cop. vivienne dragonage is not a person.
vivienne dragonage is there to explore how the ācourt mageā functions within the framework of chantry & imperial politics. sheās there to explore how a mage who comes from nothing might be able to navigate that system to the benefit of herself and the fellow mages she has taken under her protection.
she is there to complicate the mage-templar dynamics in this setting and to force you to reckon with the question of whether thedas would be ready to accept mage freedom, and whether you are prepared to protect those mages from the reactionary violence that would ensue. that is already ensuing, because the chantry could not handle it.

i havent play DAV in awhile but it really feels like its spiritually the opposite of da2.
da2 had a more sincere story (strangled by development time but it was still very ambitious and executed some elements well) and player freedom but shitty gameplay/level design. DAV's story meanwhile feels fairly heartless in certain areas and hollow, but the gameplay and level design is pretty nice in some areas.
and i would pick da2 over dav anyday
