No matter how much you insist the canon is superior, they'll never make me unnotice that A.ang never once in the entire series sheds a single word of sympathy for Katara's murdered mom and then preaches to her about forgiving the murderer who ruined her life after giving no indication over the course of 3 entire seasons that he even gives a shit about her grief at all.
No wonder she said "I knew you wouldn't understand," in TSR. Cause he never gave her or the audience any reason to think he gave a shit. The only people that did give a shit were a guy she barely knew (Haru), a guy who later betrayed her (Jet), and another guy who betrayed her (Zuko) and spent most of the series as her enemy but somehow showed her more respect and care for her feelings in 10 episodes than A.ang did in 3 seasons.
It's pretty astounding that when she reveals this fact to Aang he basically completely ignores it.
Then not only does she go on to emotionally connect to several other guys through her loss, but also the one person she relates the entire story to is ZUKO, not her supposed True Love Forever.
Does Aang know that Katara saw Kya and the man who killed her just moments before it happened? I guess we have to assume he does, as it would be WILD for a supposedly loving married couple to not know that kind of stuff about each other, but also we never see her tell him that, and you'd assume that would be an avenue for deeper emotional connection between your supposed romantic leads, but NOPE!
It's a bewildering writing choice, the kind that makes me think that Kataang was truly last-minute and a Zutara (leaning) ending was originally planned.
It really is baffling from a writing perspective. The friction between Katara and Aang during the Southern Raiders episode (friction that is not resolved, because she and Aang never actually talk out their differing opinions or come to an agreement after she walks off following her telling Aang he is wrong and choosing to have an emotional resolution with Zuko instead) also ensures that this will probably be a source of contention in their relationship even if they tried to talk about it, because she shares the story with Zuko because Aang wouldn't listen, because she confronts the man despite Aang's disagreement. There's a large chunk of Katara's emotional life that she just can't include Aang in, and that seems to be the accepted conclusion of the episode. Crazy choice if the writers didn't want me to ship zutara instead.
