Iâm sort of a revived Messi fan after some years, I didnât keep up much after the last World Cup but paid attention since the World Cup began again. I was wondering as Messi fans what can we do to prevent the spread of hate towards him because I see it EVERYWHERE. Itâs not like the past when it was some people on social media, itâs widespread now where people are complaining about everything. Thereâs so much disinformation about him like him being a Zionist, FIFA âriggingâ matches for him, people dismissing his entire career due to the performance in the final saying all his accolades are unearned which is outrageous if anyone has kept up with his career at all, even about him going to the ref about the mouth covering situation is criticized when itâs part of the rules. Iâm afraid itâs spreading to normal people who now will dismiss his amazing career, the wonderful person he is and all that he has accomplished. And in general I see so much vitriol against the Argentinian team and the Argentinian people on general and even some celebrities are spreading that hate now.
So yeah I feel very concerned as a fan and idk what to do, but finding your account on here has been really nice because tumblr atleast seems less toxic than other platforms rn for Messi fans.

This is a good question and I kinda answered in a very long way so try to read this if you can, I wanted to help others who may feel hopeless right now. Iâm glad my account has helped you, I have been processing my emotions out loud on here so anything that helps me, I try my best to share to help others.
I really wish I had an answer for you but I have been struggling with this too. This has really gone beyond football. At first I only had to deal with stupid comments from people who watched football but this tournament, Iâve had to deal with comments from co-workers, my family members who know nothing about football and strangers. Itâs crazy, everywhere I look, itâs just lies and fake news about Argentinaâs national team, Argentina as a country and Messi.
I have no words to really explain how confused and frustrated I am about the state of things right now. I also have no idea what we can do as Messi fans. All I can do is share what has helped me recently:
Stop engaging with the hate and misinformation. Even if it is something minor, block and unfollow. I have tolerated absolutely nothing this tournament, I have blocked my siblings numbers for a short period of time until they stopped sending me the fake AI videos, I have unfollowed my cousins for trying to claim that the tournament was rigged. I am choosing to protect my peace and that begins by accepting that you will not be able to change peoples minds.
Next point, the fact that people are falling prey to this propaganda campaign against Argentina is part of a MUCH bigger problem. Bigger than we will ever understand right now. It shows how easily people can fall for fake news to the point where they cannot think logically and become radical about the fake information given to them. You CANNOT help people like that.
Additionally, those people are not worth wasting your breath or time over. They were looking for something to cling to justify their nonsensical hate for Argentina and Messi and the cesspool online was happy to provide all the lies.
There is a saying that is âYou can lead a horse to water, but you canât make it drink.â It means that you can provide someone with an opportunity, guidance, or help, but you cannot force them to accept it or act on it. Ultimately, the decision has to come from them.
I believe in karma and that all of this is happening for a reason. Years from now, people will look back on this moment and be shocked and ashamed that they acted and thought like this and treated Argentina/Messi this way. But it doesnât matter. Even for ugly and evil footballers like R*naldo and Toni Kroos, history will not look back at them kindly the way it will for someone like Messi.
Now what can Messi fans do?
Appreciate the time we have left with him while he is still playing
Amplify positive news about him by liking it and reposting it, whether itâs just stories that are told about him, TikTok videos or tweets, any type of engagement helps to try and change the current algorithm that is punishing him.
Only engage in content that brings you joy (thatâs why I strongly recommend blocking and unfollowing any type of hate). This entire tournament I have been consistently blocking out stuff on Twitter and after the final, I didnât even see anything mean or rude about Argentina and Messi. Only fans expressing sadness about the loss.
Also try your best to find and listen to Argentines directly. They have been very very vocal across all platforms and fandoms. I just found a bunch of Argentine artists on Twitter who have never talked about football who were all of a sudden making these BEAUTIFUL drawings of the Argentina national team and itâs brought me so much happiness. That is the little ways that I choose to spend my time in the internet
Also, we were champions SO recently! Going back to look at all of the beautiful celebrations from 2022. We are so blessed that we experienced the joy of seeing Messi lift the trophy and seeing Argentina celebrate. Back when we lost in 2014, it was like the worst time ever because we didnât know what it was like to win and if we would ever get this far again.
Go and rewatch Messi interviews and highlights, it never gets old for me and he is so well spoken that I constantly find new things to appreciate from his interviews.
Finally, remember that none of these people matter. I remember when argentines used to burn Messiâs jersey on the streets of Buenos Aires and destroy any Messi statue/mural in the country. He is now beloved by his people. The fact that the Argentina fans stayed after the final to chant at the players that they are proud to be argentines is BEAUTIFUL and who would have thought that would be possible 10 years ago in that same exact stadium where Messi missed a penalty and lost Copa 2016? At the end of the day, the most important thing is that argentines are the most connected that they have ever been and this is only going to make them closer and stronger.
Remember that no matter what people are saying now, nothing will ever change the fact that Messi is and always will be the greatest footballer in the history of the sportďżź

Di Maria has a beautiful story about how much it hurt him to miss the 2014 World Cup final (because of injury and Real Madrid), and so him being the saviour for Argentina again was wonderful. He has been Argentinaâs most important player from Messiâs generation and they have a beautiful friendship so I found this quiet moment to be wonderful. Itâs from the Apple+ documentary that they did on Messi/argentina in 2022.
When Messi got injured in the middle of the Copa 2024 final and had to leave the game in tears, the Argentina social media team posted this meme which I found to be HILARIOUS in the middle of all of this chaos.

This was Argentinaâs first match playing at home after winning the World Cup. The Argentine fans welcomed them by singing from the moment they stepped onto the pitch, everyone was so emotional.

And this one, I donât have the exact translation but basically the Argentina football federation had this âaward ceremonyâ where they gave each player a little award for winning the World Cup. They had these people who went viral in Argentina during the tournament for how they supported the team and their story. This little boy named Jorge had this very emotional video that his friend posted online during the tournament and it went viral. He was invited to come to this event and speak to the entire team and he had everyone IN TEARS, even Scaloni. He talks with such maturity and spoke so well and it was just so great. There is an entire video of that award ceremony somewhere but this was my fav part.

The thing about Argentina is that people have this idea of how the country is (usually promoted by some first-world country) and so they already made up their minds about us. We're the villains and we are never not going to be if they refuse to interact and listen to what we say or how we are.
