Sorry, I know that was insanely long. At least I only post these like once a month. It was also very difficult to write. As you can imagine, there’s a ton I had to leave out, even long as this is. Full entry here.

Art notes and whatnot behind the cut. As an FYI: I will be traveling for about a month and a half, so I won’t be updating very frequently. But for people in Portland: I will be at Rose City Comic Con - and to people in the UK, I will be at Thought Bubble UK.

So, a photoset of my two biggest Jewish moments, me and @shiraglassman at my conversion, and then me and my rabbi at my bat mitzvah.

Hopefully eventually I’ll have a pic of me getting married and first Jewish events with my future kids.

Whenever a gentile offers their unsolicited opinion about Jews or antisemitism* (except in the case when they offer said opinions on behalf of Jews and against antisemitism), they must put at least $1.80 USD* in the tip jar per unsolicited opinion. They also have a history of really gross behaviour, like the British Jews for Jesus movement using Holocaust imagery in their proselytizing ads aimed at Jewish communities.

Oh, and also the local Messianic community for me is being led by a registered sex offender who got kicked out of an Irish Christian movement and promptly reinvented himself as a “rabbi” in East Kilbride.

The modern Messianic movement is probably a majority of gentile Christians, and some ethnic Jewish people who either converted to Christianity or were raised there.

Basically, the gulf between Jewish and Christian theology is so huge and has been for millenia that it's impossible to be religiously Jewish and believe that Jesus was the Messiah. A huge part of rabbinic Judaism is about our duty to prepare the world for the Messianic age that is to come by making it a better place.

Other major theological differences could be how they deal with forgiveness (in Judaism, you can't ask g-d for forgiveness unless you've first apologized to any people you may have hurt and done your best to make amends) and sin (Judaism has no such concept of original sin, and sin is best described as a missing of the mark, something everyone does and as long as you understand what you did wrong and try not to do it again, you're probably ok).

Also, Judaism doesn't have a requirement to believe. In fact, it's actually considered easier for a goy to live a life free of sin, because rather than the 613 mitzvot of Torah, everyone else simply has the 7 Noahide commandments to follow.

That's not to say you can't be ethnically Jewish and religiously Christian. But you can't religiously be both and most Messianics aren't even ethnically part of the Jewish people (semi-closed ethno-religions can make this stuff difficult to explain).

But yes. As soon as the early Christians began attempting to divorce themselves from Jewish communities to appeal to gentile prospective worshipers the rifts started and as both theologies evolved (the Talmud and non-Gospel parts of the New Testament show hugely different perspectives within a few centuries of each other. Now times that by 10 and you'll see how huge the difference are).
