This is one of the (dum)best Simpsons discussions to have because it involves episodes from what people no longer consider the "golden era" but I would argue that both episodes clearly show that, despite the show's supposedly "bad" turn towards the zannier, people are forgetting the series started getting sillier and more surreal since at least season 3 (also that we need to give Mike Scully his flowers more often). --- Like are people forgetting that for seasons 3 to 5 they hired Conan O'Brien and then from seasons 5 to 10 they hired Greg fucking Daniels, two of the silliest motherfuckers to ever step out of Harvard ? --- Or that George Meyer and John Swartzwelder were there from the beginning? The only reason "the silly" got more and more room as the seasons went by was because writers and showrunners kept leaving to do other things, and Mike Scully was often strapped for choices, hence why people like Meyer or Swartzwelder got even more opportunities to indulge in shenanigans-laden fares. --- Anyway my choice is HOMR/Crayon in Brain because, despite me being incredibly anti-IQ bullshit, I think it's one of the better Homer & Lisa episodes and, for better or for worse, we got a lot of those far more often than Bart & Marge episodes as the seasons went on.
