I have switched to using Startpage.com and vastly prefer it. for one thing, instead of displaying an "AI summary" at the top of the search results (unless you turn it off, yes I know), it displays the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article, with link, whenever it finds one that's relevant.

Infinity Search is an alternative search engine with a special focus on privacy

DuckDuckGo is a popular search engine for those who value their privacy and are put off by the thought of their every query being tracked and logged. Uses bangs, ![site] for in-page search (sells your data to microsoft and draws from fucking bing)

WolframAlpha is a privately owned search engine that allows you to “compute expert-level answers using Wolfram’s breakthrough algorithms, knowledgebase, and AI technology.” A data search engine.

Boardreader is a search engine for forums and message boards. It allows you to search forums and then filter down results by date and language.

Based in France, Qwant is a privacy-based search engine that won’t record your searches or use your personal details for advertising. Uses “&” as a bang search.

Another privacy-based search engine is Search Encrypt, which uses local encryption to ensure that users’ identifiable information cannot be tracked. Metasearch across multiple engines. 

Offering unbiased results from several sources, SearX is a metasearch engine that aims to present a free, decentralized view of the internet. Can be self-hosted. 

Gibiru’s tagline is “Unfiltered private search” and that’s exactly what it offers. Requires AnonymoX Firefox add-on for privacy. 

Disconnect allows you to conduct anonymous searches through a search engine of your choice.

Swisscows provides fully encrypted searches to protect your privacy and security. Built-in violence/porn filter cannot be overridden. 

MetaGer offers “Privacy Protected Search & Find” through its anonymised search. A plugin will allow it to be made a default.

Gigablast is a private search engine that indexes millions of websites and servers real-time information without tracking your data, keeping you hidden from marketers and spammers. Variety of filtration and refinement options for searching. 

Oscobo is a search engine that protects your privacy while you search the web. By not using any third-party tools or scripts, your data is protected from hacking and misuse. Has a Chrome extension to allow use in toolbar.

Use old-school searching rather than query-based for the best results.

What makes the villain the villain (inasmuch as it's useful to examine TLT characters through that kind of simplistic lens) is that when the chips are down and he has to choose, his priority is punishing the wicked, not saving the people left behind.

I would invite anyone whose engagement with their cause consists of finding the 'correct' group of people to hate, to consider whether 'evil emperor' is the next career move you see yourself taking, and if it isn't, to gently suggest disembarking from the hate train.

It's all but explicit that he is lying about much of his supposed backstory and especially those of his enemies to make himself look better. At best, he is blatantly skewing things in ways that make his actions seem more sympathetic and justified, and whenever he's caught in the act he brushes it off or worms the conversation away from it.

Even in the most generous interpretation - one that presumes the Blood of Eden really is descended from some vague evil strawman trillionaires who were abandoning everyone else to die - there's absolutely nothing noble or even avenging about what he did. After all his claptrap about saving the world, he immediately dropped everything else to focus on killing a bunch of people for the "crime" of trying to leave without his permission. Despite the fact that the trillionaires leaving didn't actually do anything to prevent anyone else from leaving in other ships, not to mention that they weren't actually hurting anyone by departing. And the very second he gained the power to destroy them directly instead of sending others in his stead, all the bullshit about him being some kinda noble eco-activist went out the window and he gleefully destroyed the world he insists he was trying to save, to the point of violating the very Worldsoul of Earth itself.

And the whole thing is, even worse, indicated to be hypocritical and motivated by resentment over a professional snub. Because John oh-so-casually admits that him and his team were themselves working for those rich people and played a key role in developing the whole "leave the planet on ships" plan to begin with, and the supposed moral feud with the trillionaires "coincidentally" only begins after said rich people pull funding from John's cryo-FTL project and take their business to a rival of his.

John isn't motivated by punishing evil more than caring for the hurt, at least not entirely. He just labels anyone who disagrees with or opposes him as evil and uses that as a blanket excuse for every bad thing he does. He's motivated entirely by his egomania and god complex, but is good at dressing it up in pretty colors.
