On the 28th of April, 2011, Ed Balls got a Twitter account. He decided (as most people under the spotlight do) to attempted to look up his own name. However, all he did was tweet “Ed Balls”. This, for some reason, got retweeted by THOUSANDS of people. On a global scale. And because he didn’t know you could delete a tweet it stayed. Every year since then,the 28th of April is Ed Balls day.

I think this is a really important thing for people to understand in the wake of everything happening in the world. People have been criticising Kendrick for not doing more, and it's like Josh says - "all these things that you saw on tv that you thought were revolutionary, they were all approved by a corporate lawyer". He then goes on to say that all the actual revolutionaries have written books before they died, and that these books are available for free because "they are so confident you won't read them they put them in libraries". This is connected to this idiotic trend of holding public figures in absurdly high esteem when it comes to politics and social issues, and relying on these millionaires to provide you woth guidance on how to act, what to think, who to vote for, instead of actually delving into thr topic matter and educating yourselves on history and politics and society and the fucking world you live in. And that is insane. That is dangerous and that is disingenious and that just demonstrates your own lack of critical thinking skills, your own lack of social, class, political consciousness and your own complacency with the state of the world. Putting celebrities on a pedestal and expecting them to fight for you or to be "the chosen one", just. Fucking ask yourselves some basic questions - if your morality and ethics are tied into what a multi-millionaire endorses, who are you actually benfitting? What do you even know?

Josh makes a really good point about entertainment here, and I think it's really prudent and really important in the times we live in to understand that you can, and in fact should separate entertainment and direct action/activism/social consciousness and your actions about aforementioned.

I've seen this rampant virtue signalling in the fandoms, especially the sport ones, where liking a club or a team or a sportsperson is automatically taken as some indication of your character to an unrealistic, unfathomable degree, and even worse, taken as a fact of your person by people who are desperate to like the "right" people and "right" teams. In this context, right may mean a lot of things but it usually has to do with "morally right", and that is one of the most absurd and most damaging things I've seen in my life. It breeds complacency to such a degree that just because you're a fan of the underdog you somehow consider yourself, and are considered, exempt from any criticism and immune to any bigotry. This can not be further from the truth; being a part of a minority or, even more nonsensically, being a fan of someone or something that advertises itself as "morally right and pure" does not innoculate you from being a piece of shit.

Another part of this is the complacency in actions. Global action is needed everywhere and communities have to be built in the wake of rise of fascism and nazism everywhere in the world, and I'm really sorry to say, but you being a fan of "the right thing" does absolutely nothing except make you feel morally superior and prone to patting yourself on the back, which means nothing. Action is needed, in whichever way that is possible and plausible for every individual person, and spending your time proving your superiority on the internet by putting your likes and dislikes of media as a "character endorsement" means less than shit.

To explain: West Saxon and Anglian are both dialects of Old English. West Saxon was the politically dominant dialect, but Anglian was the more popular spoken dialect. So a lot of Old English texts are written in West Saxon, but what we know as Middle English and Modern English descended more from Anglian because it was spoken by more people.

So grey (the Anglian word) shows up when authors are describing everyday stuff. Like in this sentence describing a grey beard from Holy Boke Gratia Dei: "The hed of Petir is a brood face with mech her on his berd and that is of grey colour be twix whit and blak."

Any Middle English text you read, you'll find Anglian grey is the word the author prefers to describe everyday things. Grey wool, grey feathers, grey stones, grey horses.

By contrast, gray (the West Saxon word) shows up when authors are describing the qualities of light.

A gleaming gray sword, a deep gray lake, a misty gray morning, cold gray marble, sad gray eyes. Like in this sentence from The Siege of Jerusalem: "They glowes of graie steel that were with gold hemmyd." More often than not, gray describes an impermanent or glimmering quality of light.

There's even an instance where a Middle English author uses both, and you can see how one spelling is more about the quality of light while the other is more about the color of the animal: "The cerkyl or the roundel off the eye ys sumtyme graye lyke the ey off a catte, sumtyme blak grey lyke the eyn off doggys."

("The circle or round of the eye is sometimes gray like the eye of a cat, sometimes black-grey like the eyes of dogs.")

I've seen Twitter users say that leaving is the wrong move because it's abandoning a platform to nazis but that's acting like all messages across that platform have the same reach which isn't the case. The algorithms are rigged. These are now propaganda machines. You will not be able to fight back whatever content is on there, you're just gonna get yourself exposed to more right wing, conservative, fascist stuff, and just pure misinformation.
