the concept and idea of “you can always start trying to be a better person” is extremely important to me both in media and irl and i continue to be deeply deeply disturbed by the trend on this site pushing that these ideas in media are bad writing or even morally reprehensible
because theyd rather someone stay terrible or just straight up die than become a better person
from a compassionate point of view it’s deeply distressing and from a pragmatic point of view it’s outright frustrating
it’s fucked up.
What is the most important step a man can take?
The next.
I think part of the pushback about this is the idea that, to “redeem” bad people, their victims must first forgive them for unforgivable acts.
This is false. No one is obligated to forgive you. You can learn from your mistakes and become the best, kindest person on earth, and the people you’ve hurt still won’t forgive you, and you’ll have to accept that. And that doesn’t mean you aren’t allowed to grow. Because we aren’t just “pure” or “sinful”, we’re complex.
i love being both severely mentally unwell and hideously self aware it's like a free completely useless bonus feature that enhances the experience in all the worst and most mortifying ways possible
every waking moment of my life feels like watching one of those scenes in a show designed to provoke second hand embarassment in the viewer

I think an interesting gap in fiction and consuming it is that sometimes a character’s narrative age doesn’t actually match their canon age. Character age is an interesting point of characterization for a character that can deeply affect them however at times it’s so nebulous that people just don’t believe you when you find out said age. In example for those who watched the violet evergarden anime it’s extremely unlikely one can correctly guess the age of the protagonist as 14 because of the story being told. Another interesting case is when ages are changed, for the original higurashi a portion of the cast was supposed to be older teens in highshool, however at a certain point they got aged down to be middle schoolers which also made sense in different ways for the cast in the sense of “this is how middle schoolers act, I’d believe that this character is like 14.” It’s interesting in how age characterizes and colors certain actions. Also this also shows what the author considers to be a narrative adult even if it is creepy or befuddling. However what I find more interesting is when a character is narratively a child or minor.
Less so in a supposed adult character that isn’t written as an adult because of the authors culturally objectionable tastes with nothing deeper, more on what it generally means to be not an adult or a young adult with less experience in a story.
I’d say for monogatari it’s especially interesting as nisio very much believes the age of adult is 20 (as in accordance with Tokyo law) with true adults being around 24+ (in the sense they have their shit together but as nisio’s aged the age he considers mature adults to be increases as well.) Characters in monogatari don’t only have literal and narrative matching ages. Characters like Koyomi, Tsubasa, Hitagi, and Sodachi who are 18 for a portion of the series aren’t narratively considered adults for their stories, and thus make more sense considering their ages.
Age is an important construct in monogatari essentially, “Sengoku Nadeko, 14 years old” and “Sengoku Nadeko, 15 years old” hold different meanings because of this.

i hate it when i cant even write a poem about something because its too obvious. like in the airbnb i was at i guess it used to be a kids room cause you could see the imprint of one little glow in the dark star that had been missed and painted over in landlord white. like that's a poem already what's the point
you get it. you get the themes. i dont have time to do it justice. just look at it its on the ceiling

Nothing will ruin your 20’s more than thinking you should have your life together already.
Nothing will ruin your 30’s more than thinking you should have your life together already.
Friends, I’ve got news for you about your 40s, you’ll never believe this but…
I wouldn't be surprised if boys like you just as much as girls do.
we are in a media literacy crisis
friendly reminder that characters don't need to be saints to be entertaining. and telling a story does not mean endorsement. art does not need to be all about morally good people.
IDK if this was meant as hyperbole but it's literally true:
Adult literacy is low.
Child literacy is low.
Information literacy has shifted dramatically in the last decade, but reputable information sources like research journals and factual news reporting have been unable to keep pace.
We are genuinely in a crisis of media literacy, with ever fewer genuinely factual resources available in the style and language used by contemporary audiences.
It may sound condescending, but we genuinely need to remind people, or worse, explain to them for the first time that art is not evidence of real world behaviour.
So, thank you, for this reminder. Genuinely.
You're correct:
Art does not need to feature exclusively morally pure characters. Art is not proof of the creator's secret, violent desires.

Imagine my shock as a neurodivergent teen when I first realized that using large vocabulary and eloquent speech doesn't make you less likely to be misinterpreted, rather it adds an entirely new layer of misinterpretation I had never even realized existed in the form of people thinking you're being snobbish or condescending when you're just trying to be specific
