I made attempts more times than most people realize . . . I lost count, to be honest. For years, I’ve been praised for my big, bright smile and cheerful attitude. No one would ever know how emotional turmoil and mental disturbance lurked/lurks beneath all that. I had an entire ten-year stretch where I thought about suicide constantly. When that ended, I had relapses only here and there. The thoughts still hit me once in a while, but it’s not even close to what it was when no one could get through to me. I share this to say this: be nice to people—always. You NEVER know what people are going through behind the scenes. Let people open up without interrupting them. Most of the time, a listening ear has more success than unsolicited advice. There’s a time and place for both. Also, keep other people’s secrets private. Treat people how YOU want to be treated. If you are the one with suicidal thoughts, please Please PLEASE drop your guard and open up to a confidant. The hardest lesson I’ve ever learned was to be someone I’D want to be around. I’ve spent most of my life as a Negative Ned who would find ten problems for every solution, but I’m finally learning to forget the outcome and focus on the process. Being “transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2) is not an overnight process, but takes steady dedication. Relapse is not a reason to cry, self-condemn, and quit. Take authority over yourself because the reality is that no one else can or will. Your mind is YOUR responsibility. Be honest as you evaluate yourself. Weigh your strengths and weaknesses. Don’t be ashamed to start very small, for as the idiom goes: an elephant is eaten ONE bite at a time. I’m so extra when it comes to making food 😂🤷🏽‍♂️🙈 Last month, I made a commitment to actually go grocery shopping once a week and not eat out as much.
