I'm doing a lot of research on writing and novel structure for Punk Rock Sci Fi novel and one of the things that comes up frequently is the need for transformation or change of the main character throughout the novel.
What's interesting, having just finished re-reading the Captive Prince trilogy, is that Damen only...kind of?.... fits that. He changes in the sense of becoming more aware of duplicity around him, but actually the arc I'd name for Damen is learning how to be the SAME person as the world and his understanding of the world changes. At the beginning of the books he is honest, trustworthy, capable, and honorable. At the end of the books, he's still all of those things. What's remarkable is that he continues to be that person through becoming a slave, finding out his brother betrayed him, and throwing in his lot with an enemy he's convinced until almost the end of the series is going to betray him too. Damen holds strong to the person he wants to be no matter how difficult it is.
"Save the Cat! Writes a Novel" (the book I'm currently using for research) also recommends picking as the "hero" the character who changes the most over the course of the novel/series. For the Captive Prince trilogy, that character is definitively Laurent. Yet I think it works so much better for Damen to be the POV character because our view of Laurent through Damen's eyes is way more interesting. It's fun to let Damen be an unreliable narrator about Laurent and for the reader to have to piece together Laurent's intentions from incomplete information. And it gives the trilogy plenty of opportunity for punchy twists as character and plot points are revealed.
There's not really a point to my rambling here, other than that traditional advice about writing has to be interrogated a little bit and held up against examples to see what fits and what doesn't. Captive Prince is delightful because it subverts these structures.
Ok but I cant imagine how badly it must have hurt Laurent to start falling for Damen.
TW: CSA mention
(All of this is just my personal interpretation of Laurent's behaviours throughout the trilogy. If anyone has a different one I'd love to hear it!)
---
Captive Prince
Before Laurent met Damen personally, the image that he had of him in his head was of a barbarian. The person who killed his brother. He probably even thought Damen was just as bad as his uncle or blamed Damen for indirectly causing the circumstances that led to his abuse. Could be a stretch, but this would probably explain why Laurent seemed confused that Damen wouldnt 'perform' with Nicaise in the ring.
---
Prince's Gambit
Then in the second book, Damen shatters this image again and again. He genuinely tries to help Laurent and ensure his survival, and even gets to know Laurent better than he'd like. Damen's changing thoughts about Laurent's behaviours are demonstrated thoroughly throughout the second book, even learning when Laurent is too overcome by emotion to think rationally and when he needs to be calmed down or simply left alone. This probably even leads to frustration because Damen isn't supposed to feel this safe to be around. He isn't /supposed/ to feel this comfortable around his brother's killer.
This frustration is most clearly pictured in these scenes:
Laurent's fluctuating opinion of Damen definitely caused a lot of inner conflict for him. He was angry and he wanted to be angry for his brother, but on the other hand his brother's murderer was probably the first person he genuinely trusted in a long time, and these feelings probably became more complicated when you take into account how Damen reminds him of Auguste. He tries to suppress any semblance of romantic/sexual feelings for Damen because having those emotions at all feels like a betrayal of the one other person he truly loved, but that of course doesn't go very well for him.
Eventually, his attraction to Damen gets too hard to ignore and maybe the reason why he rushes to express these emotions right before Damen is scheduled to leave the Veretian army is because he knows that the next time he faces Damen, if at all, will be as King: the person who killed his brother. It would be easier to get it out of the way and rationalise it while Damen is still a slave rather than grapple with it later. Maybe "Laurent, I am your slave" assured Laurent in it's own way, because as their affection for each other grew, that lie became a comfort for them both; they wouldn't have to face the truth until later.
---
King's Rising
When Damen's identity was revealed to the Veretians and they continued to fight together out of necessity, Laurent found himself with two different ideas of who Damianos is: the one who was loyal to him and the one who took everything he had.
Then they get close again and Damen stops finding comfort in the lie that they built for themselves because he can't anymore. Starts acknowledging his past and wanting for Laurent to take him as he is. And Laurent finally realises that one way or another he has to process the fact that these two Damens are the same people. He has to cope with the fact that he might be falling in love with one of the people who hurt him most.
This brings all of the conflicting emotions that he wanted to suppress back, which is why he reacted so badly when Damen tried to directly acknowledge what he'd done:
I hope you enjoy this post that is absolutely made by a person who likes these books in a normal way. I am so neurotypical about captive prince i like it a little bit

yo dude as someone who grew up with Harry potter and avatar and all these stories about child saviours and LOVED them, reigens role in mob psycho absolutely exploded my brain like BRO. when reigen grabs mob, looks him in the eyes and tells him that he's going to lose playing by the enemies rules, and then, totally sincere for once, tells him it's alright to run away, and all the lines melt away from mob's face, and he gasps with relief because he's a CHILD who's already done enough and was only waiting for someone to tell him that he'd done his part, that the burden of destiny does not belong to a child, that there is no prophecy to fulfill, that his childhood comes before his abilities, that he is no chosen one. dude that slapped
When Riegen stepped up and said “you’re 14. Let the adults handle adult problems. You go handle teenager problems, like dating and lunch with friends.” It HIT
But THEN he turned around to face the ADULTS who had been tormenting children, building this entire psychic evil group - he looked at these people who could rip him apart with their mind, and he really said “stop acting like children, you’re acting pathetic. Stop being selfish and join society to change it instead of throwing a tantrum in your self-appointed special box of “I get what I want””
And fuck me, Reigen is such a flawed person. He’s selfish, he’s a liar and a conman, but he saw one (1) scared child in his office, and again at that confrontation, and he really said “That’s not your responsibility. That’s not your burden. That’s not your fear to hold. It doesn’t matter if you’re more capable - it’s not meant for you. Let the adults handle it.”
He was really the Responsible Adult (tm) that every child hero should have had.
And what does he get?
100% Gratitude.

He’s maybe not a good person, but he’s a GOOD PERSON, yknow?
I love Reigen.
I've said this before but I'll say it again, HARD agree with everything here but I wanna take it a step further. I would argue that Reigen's most special skill of all is figuring people out. it's what he does... he's always done it. he doesn't actually have psychic powers, so that's his real tool of the trade. and built up around this are all these other legitimate skills, like massage therapy or photoshop... stuff that another person might find a more legitimate use for, but that's not Reigen's prerogative.
Reigen services a very specific, very niche clientele. we all joke, but for real... Reigen looks like the most con artisty psychic you've ever seen in your life. and the people who are still going to him in spite of that? are probably pretty gullible. to be honest, that's probably why most of their problems aren't actually ghosts. they're gullible enough to believe that ghosts are what cause their issues, and when they go to a real psychic, all that psychic will say is "that's not really a ghost" and send them away because that shit isn't worth their time. the problem remains unsolved, the client keeps searching for a supernatural solution, and a true con artist would totally have a field day with them. Reigen technically doesn't need to try as hard as he does, and could probably make more money by convincing these people that their problem will return without his routine, paid assistance. if he really was just conning them, what use would he have for a real psychic employee?
deep down, Reigen wants to help people. it's why he felt zero fulfillment from working a stable office job, and why he falls head first into mentoring some random kid who, for all he knew, was just delusional at first impression. and the thing is... for as admirable as that might be, he's still insanely flawed.
Reigen's best and worst trait is that he thinks he knows better. when he actually does, he's brilliant. but when he doesn't... things get tricky. Reigen sees a lot of gullible people filter through his office, and he saves a lot of them from getting legitimately swindled by someone more nefarious than himself. but over time, that can lead a person to be suspicious of the intentions of any and everyone. and it can make him feel like he has the upper hand compared to most people, just because of his skepticism. he sees a wide-eyed innocent kid like Mob, and his first gut reaction is to try and teach him how to be more wise about the world. but Reigen isn't always right. in fact, Reigen has made himself pretty isolated with this mindset.
this is where we see how Mob and Reigen are each able to teach one another. Reigen made the mistake of assuming it was only a one way street, and failed to see Mob's true strength. Mob can be a little naive, sure... but sometimes he trusts people to be good, even before they're ready to be, and they change because he gave them the chance. when Mob is right about a person, he's really right. Reigen himself is proof of that. where would they be if Mob hadn't initially let Reigen have such a big place in his life?
in season one, we saw what Reigen was capable of. I firmly believe he's the only person to have ever "defeated" 100% Mob... by paying attention. he recognized how Mob's emotional state was escalating, understood how upsetting it was to Mob, and did what Mob needed in order to pull him out of his downward spiral. he stopped it before it happened, and in return, Mob gave Reigen all of his gratitude. and that manifested as a stronger power than anything we've ever seen Mob produce on his own. because he would rather give every ounce of his strength to someone he trusts, than hurt anyone. that was season one.
season two features Reigen starting to overstep Mob's boundaries. Reigen tells himself that everything he's doing is for Mob's benefit, because that narrative is convenient for him, but in reality, Reigen needs Mob too. Reigen is beginning to feel isolated... he's starting to feel used by the people who should be propping up his self esteem by needing him. an ironic thing for a con artist to feel. and he projects that onto Mob, trying to fix a problem that Mob doesn't have. ultimately what Reigen needs to learn is that Mob has his own charisma, and he's getting closer to people by being genuine.
in the end, Reigen and Mob both have valuable perspectives, and they absolutely should learn from each other... and they enjoy knowing each other for more reasons than just convenience. they really are friends.
