And how to not notice her ? Even as she is curled up on her chair, it's obvious that she is tall. Very tall. Her entire body looks like it is trying to excuse itself for taking so much space, as she awkwardly adjusts her posture when you enter the room.

Her large build contrasts with the acne on her face, and her little pink hairclips. She must be one of the youngest members of the crew, darn, why did they hire someone so young to be copilot ?

Some details about her appearance struck out to you even more, when you compare them to the redhead next to her.

If Orange's uniform is impeccable, so is Pink's. What is strange is how neat it is, when the rest of her is so...messy. Her hair, her skin and even her poorly done nail polish betray a lack of self care. Her shirt, however, looks like it has been ironed a few minutes prior. Even Orange's isn't that perfect.

Speaking of Orange, you can't help but notice that she is wearing white gloves, and not Pink. It would be useful, you think, as you watch her switch her burning hot coffee mug from one hand to the other. Did she lose them ? Or did she just want to show off her nails ? Not that there is anything to show off, really...

You are snapped out of your thoughts by Orange's high pitched voice.

ORANGE: Good afternoon Ma'am Red Ma'am !

She almosts spills her drink as she stands and pose in a perfect military salute. Pink imitates her, failing to retrieve her mug in the same manner. You can't help but feel sorry as you realize the liquid staining her boots is, in fact, hot chocolate.

PINK : G-g...'fternoon, Ma'am Red...

Her cheeks turn red from embarassment. Orange doesn't seem to notice that at all, instead holding out her hand to you with a big smile.

ORANGE: And good afternoon to you, too ! You must be the new manager trainee, nice to meet you ! I'm Orange ! (You shake her hand for what seems like an eternity) I mean, haha, we already met before boarding but it was so quick we might as well not know eachother at all hahaha ! I'm sure you will get used to space travel very soon and-

RED: They will.

As soon as those words leave the manager's mouth, Orange's incessant flow of words stops and she lets go of your hand.

ORANGE: Haha, sorry ma'am. Got carried away.

RED : It's all fine ! Grey and I simply have a lot to go around today. (She turns toward you) As you could have guessed, this is our experienced pilot Orange. And this is...oh...hm. This is a mess.

Pink, who had been holding out her hand this entire time, quickly puts it down and shuffles out of the steaming black puddle at her feet.

PINK: I'm...huhh...I'm sorry I'll go clean this...

ORANGE : Oh my ! (She also turns red) How did you manage that ? Right in front of Ma'am Red ?! Hurry up and-

RED: No need, no need. Yellow will clean this, just make sure not to damage any equipment, alright ?

PINK :Y-y-ye-

ORANGE : Of course Ma'am ! Right away ! (She mumbles to Pink) You heard her ? Hurry up and go get a change of boots ! Now !

The girl walks out of the room without daring her eyes off the floor. Red's stare follows her until she disappears behind a corner. You feel very out of place in all of this.

RED : Alright, Grey, let's go ! Much to see, much to do.

She walks out of the room, in the opposite direction from Pink. You promptly follow, but as you leave you can still hear high pitched blabber :

ORANGE : It's a pleasure to meet you Grey ! I'm sure you will love it here ! The coffee machine is out of order, sorry ! But there's still some in the-

Her voice fades as Red leads you south. You can't help but ask her :

YOU : Is the salute necessary ?

RED : Ha ha ! No. She just does that.

Once again she barely stops to show you the rooms you go through.

RED : So, this is where we keep the shield up to date, this is the computer room...oh, hi Yellow !

As you both enter the office where the only computer is, the girl who was sitting here quickly stands up in front of the screen. Next to her, a neglected mop and bucket.

You are asleep. All is dark, all is calm, all is good.

Until your mind is suddenly jolted awake by words, distant. But awfully close to your ears.

??? : Hello ? Earth to-hm... Space to Grey ! It's time to get to work.

Hearing your name followed by the word "work", you finally come to your senses. Right. This is your first day, and you are napping on the job.

Panicked, you open your eyes and carry your head off the table on which you had passed out. A familiar face greets you.

Two soulless eyes stare at you, accompanied by an equally empty smile. A red suited woman stands tall in front of you. She seems calm, but the tight grip on her notebook makes you wonder for how long she has been standing there...

??? : Ah ! You're finally awake. Good. Let's get to work, trainee.

Crap. This is Red, your manager. Crap. The training. You are doing bad.

Oddly, she doesn't seem upset that she just found you sleeping, alone in the cafeteria. Her eternal smile remains on her face, her notepad proudly held against her chest. Something about that woman...from the moment you boarded this ship, her deep unsettling stare never left you. You wished she would leave you alone, but alas...hard to avoid someone in space.

RED : I'm sure you are well rested now. After all, you were supposed to meet me in the admin office half an hour ago !

YOU : I'm sorry...

RED : Apologies later, work now ! Follow me. You've yet to meet the rest of the crew.

You hurriedly follow the woman as she leaves the cafeteria, without checking behind her at all. She barely stops to explain the contents of the rooms you go through.

RED : So, this is the weapons room, where we get rid of potential incoming asteroids. Then, down there, we have the oxygen...

YOU : Wait wait, shouldn't I know how to do these things ?

Red finally turns back, smiling wider.

RED : Not at all ! You won't have to bother with these lowly manual tasks at all. Orange takes care of the asteroids, for exemple ! She's good at it. Very, very good. Too good even.

YOU : Orange ?

You can only vaguely remember the crewmates' faces, from when you first boarded. The manager stops in front of two closed doors.

RED : Well, funny you mention her. (Wasn't she the one who mentionned her in the first place...?) This is the navigation room, where our pilot and copilot are. She presses a button, revealing two people sitting in front of a panel of buttons.

...so there's a coffee machine, somewhere.

I understand that the most obvious core of this movie was that the lasting grief and pain caused by Lars’ mother dying ultimately culminated in this delusion he grew attached to that felt Safe from Loss.

But beyond that? You have a story about a male lead projecting himself onto a female doll; giving her the same backstory, the same childhood, likes and dislikes. Asking his sister in law if she would mind lending this projection of himself some clothes. Speaking with those around him Through Her. This is how She (Lars) is feeling. This is what happened To Her (Lars). Expressing he wouldn’t mind if She had short hair. Then, as the movie progresses and as Lars goes through the growing pains of putting the delusion to rest - he begins introducing More and More traditionally feminine clothes (pink and florals) into his own wardrobe.

Lars doesn’t start feeling comfortable or expressive until he’s speaking through Bianca. Lars spends the whole movie using Bianca to gain a connection to his family/community and his femininity, utilizing her as an outlet for these things he doesn’t know how to process. Then, gradually, Lars bridges the gap (Bianca) between himself and these connections (notably a clear moment of this was when he asked his brother when he knew he was A Man), before ultimately he (she?) doesn’t feel like he needs her anymore.
