can we bring back the term "fair-weather friend" bc I feel like if fair-weather friends got called that more this whole argument about whether or not you should be there for your friends when it's inconvenient/at what point of personal inconvenience it's ok to bail on your friends would kinda fall apart bc like. we literally have a word for "friend who's only there when you don't need something from them" because the baseline expectation is that a friend should be there even when it sucks. like we used to make fun of people for bailing on their friends.

maybe it's silly when my dialect of english isn't minoritised or endangered but it makes me sad when i realise that the way i speak has become americanised and i've lost a lot of the phrases i grew up with in favour of ones i've picked up online. the other day i found myself saying I would "throw [something] out". it would always have been "throw away" in my family. when did i start saying out instead? "i need to throw that out" = I need to throw it away, in the way i learned to speak. talking about laundry and groceries instead of doing the washing, doing the food shop. "i need to do laundry" where my mum would say "i've got to put a wash on". these are the everyday things, but there are a thousand more tiny details, language flattened and homogenised by media and international conversations
and it's not that the international conversations aren't valuable. and my dialect is not anything special or anything endangered. but language variety and dialect variety matters even when it's boring and everyday, i think. i am trying to remember how to speak with my own tongue again
it's "hahah yeah nobody can ever tell where i from" as a joke until you realise you don't know what it would sound like to come from there
it's "give your characters a distinct way of speaking that says something about them" until you realise they all sort of sound the same, american-flattened british english, everything too distinctive smoothed away to be understood online and everything quirky or unusual disappeared in favour of a more common option

like. i have one of the least minoritised dialects of british english that could possibly exist. i'm from london and the south east. sure you'll rarely see MLE in formal written text but i only have smatterings of that anyway. but i already don't sound like i did ten years ago and struggle to remember the ways i learned to phrase things. (and you won't see MLE in formal written text so i won't learn them that way.) and some of that is a reflection of the places i've lived and the people I've been but some of it isn't and it makes me sad

The new EHRC Code of Practice pushes trans people out of toilets, hospital wards, and community spaces. It normalises gender policing based on appearance and stereotypes. It becomes statutory guidance in the UK by the end of June.
Trans people are now legally their assigned gender at birth and must join gendered spaces accordingly, but if they are perceived as their lived gender, they can also be ejected from those spaces. The guidance says: either break the law, or don’t pass too well.
A mass lobby is where you invite your MP to discuss your concerns with you in-person. Ask your MP to:
Demand full parliamentary scrutiny, debate, and use their free vote on the EHRC Code of Practice.
Support any motions rejecting the EHRC guidance. As of June 4th, Labour MP Nadia Whittome has submitted a prayer motion - Early Day Motion 240.
Write to Bridget Phillipson, the Minister for Women and Equalities about our concerns
Your MP does not have to be an ally, they do not have to respond to your email for you to show up and greencard them (details below the cut.) What matters is that as many people as possible show up.
I cannot stress this enough: Showing up in person matters. It is much more effective than petitions, emails, and letters.
It is a horrible, stressful time, and I am so sorry if you're trans and live in the UK. But I was at last year's mass lobby and the line for greencarding alone stretched around the back gates.
