A power that creates fear and pain and only seems to be used for destruction? I can’t think of anyone who would know what that feels like.

Katara whose first contact with blood bending was also tied into the pain of losing yet another part of her culture (the only other southern blood bender) to the fire nation’s genocide. Katara who had to deal with the moral complexities of someone from her culture turning her very real and very understandable grief and rage towards innocents, and having to also deal with the fact that those innocents were citizens of the imperial colonial regime they were fighting against.

Katara who watched her friends lose their autonomy to this power, and who then lost her own autonomy to this power. Katara who had no choice but to turn against the only other person in the world who could understand her and was like her (a southern waterbender). Katara who was so afraid that she’d become like Hama because she already saw so much of herself in Hama.

Katara who was also a respected savior of the world and who advocated for banning blood-bending because it was so tied into her own trauma that she couldn’t ever see past that and didn’t want to look. And who, in a world where there’s an overall culture of great respect for elders was going to argue with an elder who also saved the world even if they DID think enough about the possible implications of blood bending to use it?

And if they wanted to, did they think it worth advocating for- a skill that is extremely specialized, extremely difficult to learn and beyond the capabilities of many waterbenders to do so even if it weren’t illegal, and only (ostensibly) accessible 12 nights a year? Even if someone in-universe did consider the possible good it could do, it likely simply wasn’t worth arguing against Katara’s wishes. And Katara’s wishes were informed by trauma.

Katara was a very wise woman and an amazing healer. She was able to move on from a lot of her trauma and have a well-rounded, well-informed perspective on the world and the people in it. But this seems to be one thing that she never was able to break down and look past because of the trauma it caused her, and I think that’s very human of her and makes sense.

I am once again begging people to realize that AI checker doesn’t work. it’s never worked. it’s notoriously known to have flagged human-made works as AI and AI-generated works as human-made. and by feeding it people’s works, you are feeding more works to AI, because apparently the machine itself is AI.
