i can’t talk shit about the pirates of the caribbean films as if elizabeth swann becoming pirate king didn’t hand my entire ass to me and make me the gay i am today
3. avoiding sexualizing elizabeth or the other female pirate characters in the first 3 films by allowing them to wear period-accurate pirate outfits that aren’t tailored to be revealing and impractical for ‘sex appeal’ just because they’re women
4. hans zimmer’s entire score but especially the iconic ‘he’s a pirate’ main theme
5. When the movie came out, morally-gray characters like Jack were actually not really a thing yet in pop culture, and it’s not Pirates’ fault that there are a ton of stupid shitty copycats out there.
6. I run a corseting panel at cons and literally use Elizabeth’s lace-up scene as a video clip of what historical corseting was actually like, because the only thing they got wrong in this scene is that tightlacing wouldn’t be a thing for about another 200 years (and you couldn’t tightlace with the corset style Elizabeth is wearing anyway). It’s one of the most accurate corseting scenes I’ve ever seen.
7. Will’s hat.
8. That scene with all the pirates on the gallows where that little boy starts singing Hoist the Colours? Yeah, that’s fucking legendary. The rest of AWE was kind of a trash fire, but that scene gave me goosebumps.
9. There’s this great shot in the first one where they really drive home the class differences inherent in this time period by having the governor talking about progress and civilization to Elizabeth in their carriage, and then they cut to a shot outside the carriage where a beggar gets splashed by mud from the wheel. It’s a perfect way to underline that everything is not, in fact, a nice little upper-class fairytale, and to give some weight to Will’s storyline, because he has a lot more in common with that beggar than with the governor.
10. For its time, the CGI was fucking amazing.
11. And let’s not forget the work of the makeup department, which had to actually invent new ways of putting on makeup for this movie.
12. The governor’s death scene. Holy shit.
13. They could have gone with a Jack/Will/Elizabeth love triangle, but they didn’t. There are some hints Jack is in love (or at least in lust) with Elizabeth, but he recognizes that she loves Will, and that’s that.
15. The introduction of fantasy elements to historical fiction outside of Tolkein-esque fantasy, and how it contributed to and expanded the Fantasy Media boom we’re still enjoying today.
2. They had a woman pirate right in the first film, when the tradition is to only show male ones (hell, the PotC ride at Disney had a wench auction scene until recently). And it was a female pirate of colour at that!
3. Elizabeth may not have known how to fight in the first film, but she wasn’t helpless either. Her first instinct was to fight, but she also had the brains to recognize when it was best to hide instead. Plus when given the chance she stabbed Barbosa that one time.
4. Elizabeth’s lack of fighting ability was not simply because she was a woman, it was clear it was due to her societal circumstances, since we saw other women of different socioeconomic backgrounds being able to fight (and when given the opportunity to learn Elizabeth took to fighting like a duck on water).
5. The Hoist the Colours scene where we see pirates of multiple ethnicities and their varying flags, reminding us that pirates came in all shapes and sizes and weren’t just white men.
6. One of the Pirate Lords being yet ANOTHER woman of colour. She may not have had much of a speaking role if memory serves, but even her presence is already a big deal.
7. The pirates accepting their King is a woman without much fuss.
I’m pretty sure that female Chinese pirate was a nod to a real, documented female pirate king who was Chinese and had a whole fleet of ships at her disposal but I can’t remember her name rn
My favorite part about the Bretheren Court voting wasn’t that they were against Elizabeth for becoming King as a woman and newcomer. They were pissed at Jack for being a chaotic neutral who broke the decades long tradition of an egotistical stalemate by voting for someone besides himself.
Also, the deleted scenes from Black Pearl and At World’s End that divulge more of Jack’s troubled past, like how he was branded as a pirate by the East Indian Trading Company because he stole a ship full of slaves and freed them.
The CGI looked good because it was used sparingly and worked on hard by a team that was probably paid well.
The ships, most stunts, and people were real.
Davy Jones was 95% Bill Nighý with dots on his face for the tentacles to be added later. All the acting and menacing was Bill.
The skeleton crew in POTC 1 used motion capture, then they took photos of the actors in costume to create skeletons over them.
When it’s raining on the ship: they’re on a real ship on a sound stage with water being poured over them.
When Calypso turned into the million crabs they got “greenscreen” balls to drop on the set and everyone to get the flow of the collapsing mass correctly.
In the 3rd film when Jack was hallucinating miniature versions of himself, they made giant hair for the “miniture” shots for him to hold on.
And when he was surrounded by other “Jacks” they were real people dressed like him with Depp doing the close ups.
These people did everything phycial that they could.
And only when they had to, they turned to CGI.
Also Jack pretends to be a carefree asshole, he’s not. He cares about people. If he didn’t care he wouldn’t have saved the slaves or Elizabeth at the start of the film, or 50% of the stuff he did in the films. And that’s what th3 copycats miss: Jack says he’s an asshole with no heart but his actions speak louder than his words and his actions say he cares.
Also all the wardrobe & like 90% of props and environments were real and really looked like that. And had been meticulously designed and created and embroidered.
Disney can’t make shit like that anyore and it’s sad tbh.

In a footnote to a May 10, 2005, memorandum from the Office of Legal Council, the Bush attorney general’s office argued that restricting the caloric intake of terrorist suspects to 1000 calories a day was medically safe because people in the United States were dieting along those lines voluntarily.
“While detainees subject to dietary manipulation are obviously situated differently from individuals who voluntarily engage in commercial weight-loss programs, we note that widely available commercial weight-loss programs in the United States employ diets of 1000 kcal/day for sustain periods of weeks or longer without requiring medical supervision,” read the footnote. “While we do not equate commercial weight loss programs and this interrogation technique, the fact that these calorie levels are used in the weight-loss programs, in our view, is instructive in evaluating the medical safety of the interrogation technique.”
Another another friendly reminder that the Minnesota Starvation Experiment subjected adult men who were VOLUNTEERS to 1,560 calorie diets and the psychological effects were so profound that one volunteer cut three of his own fingers off and could not remember why.
These men were volunteers who knew exactly what they would be going through and when it would end, and who believed they were doing it for a good and moral reason (the research was used to help rehabilitate victims of starvation and famine at the end of WWII).
And these are the things we are expected to engage in FOREVER to stay at a “healthy” weight.
Reading about the Minnesota Starvation experiment was my wake-up call. It was what kicked me out of my eating disorder. The guy missing three fingers, whatever his name was, he was the last straw for me.
Scared me so fucking bad I stopped restricting my food that day, and never went back to it.
Anorexia has ~16% mortality rate, slightly higher than acted upon suicidal ideation. It’s more lethal than actively trying to kill oneself and this is why.
Remember that “calories” are a measure of the “energy” you get from food and not specifically a measure of fat or sugar or any one thing. A single calorie is the amount of heat it takes to warm water by one degree Celsius. Using it as a measure of a “healthy diet” is batshit gibberish.
Kind of a tangent, but I always cringe when the subjects of the Minnesota Starvation experiments are called volunteers. They were selected from conscientious objectors to the war effort from work camps. So it was… fight in a war you morally disagree with, hard labor in a prison camp, or become a human guinea pig.

"Come here, kiddo."
Tsukishima sits on the step of the genkan calling your daughter. You left for work today, leaving Kei to take care of her because his schedule is free. He sighs as your daughter's taking so long choosing which pair of shoes she wants to wear. She hums in dissatisfaction, a hand on her hips as she looks at her shoes.
"I have no nice shoes."
She mumbles and Kei rubs his temples before patting his lap.
"Okay, c'mon I'll get you new shoes later," your daughter looks at Kei, a big smile on her face. His expression is genuine and soft as he smiles at her, "Now, hurry up."
He really will buy her new shoes, even though you'll probably scold him for spoiling her.
Your daughter looks at the rack again before finally picking out one. She walks up to Kei and places it on top of his large hands. She uses the arm Kei puts out for support to hold onto, as he slips on one shoe, doing the same for the other foot. Your daughter does a little twirl and Kei smiles at her.
His little princess.
He stands up from the genkan and gets her backpack, slipping it on one shoulder before putting his hand out for her to hold. She takes his pointer finger in her smaller hands, looking up at him with a big smile before saying, "Let's go!!" Kei smiles and he opens the door, repeating your daughter's words softly.
"Please be careful!"
Kei calls out your daughter's name as he follows her, who's running full speed towards the playground. He's so worried for her that she might trip and get hurt. He can't have that, oh no, not on his watch. He lifts up his arm to check the time quickly before walking towards your daughter, who found a home in the sandbox. He crouches down, a smile on his face as he watches her play. It's actually quite sunny at the moment and Kei notices that your daughter can't see very well, so what he does is put a hand up to cover the sun that's hitting your daughter's face, shielding her from the harsh rays. He smiles when your daughter stops squinting and he stays like that for the whole time, ignoring the fact that his arm is getting tired. He looks around the playground and sighs.
"Tadashi's late."
He checks his watch again, before looking back at your daughter that's busy making a sand pile. He puts his hand out and helps your daughter make a little mountain, while he talks to her softly about what she plans on doing with it. His ears eventually perk up at a certain voice of a little boy he knows very well, calling for him.
"Uncle Kei!!!"
Yup, he was right.
He looks behind him and sees Yamaguchi carrying his son, Haru. There's an apologetic smile on Tadashi's face, as his son makes grabby hands toward Tsukishima. He calls your daughter's attention and she stands up almost immediately, running toward the freckled father. Tadashi puts his son down, and he runs, arms wide and a big smile as he hugs your daughter. Tsukishima walks up beside Tadashi and puts both of his hands on his hips lazily, as he smiles at the sight of his daughter and his best friend's son.
"You're late."
"I'm sorry, Tsuki."
Kei shakes his head softly, as a small smirk plasters itself on his face.
Some things never change, huh?
"It's been 4 years since we graduated high school and you still call me Tsuki."
Yamaguchi laughs awkwardly as he rubs the back of his neck, "Can't help it. I've been calling you that ever since we were little." Kei smiles at the memory and he can't help but think to himself.
"We were kinda like them, no?"
Yamaguchi hums and your daughter waves at Kei before turning her attention back to Haru. She looks for him because he disappeared, only to see him crouching in front of the bushes. She gets off the swing and skips her way through.
"Haru, what are you looking at?"
"There's a beetle here, look!!" he says excitedly and he motions for her to get closer. She crouches down and her eyes widen. She picks it up and places it on her palm, making Haru screech and run away from her. Yamaguchi and Kei both looked at the kids at the same time when Haru screamed. They saw him running toward them before begging to be carried by his father, making Tadashi pick him up. Kei looks at him confused before turning his gaze to your daughter who's walking with a beetle in her hand. The blond let out a sound of disgust as your daughter shows him the insect.
"Lookie what Haru found!!"
"Very nice, honey. But please put it back where you found it." Kei replies as he crouches down to meet her level, eyeing the beetle. He backs away when she suddenly shoved it in his face, the blond almost falling to the ground. Being a middle blocker sure made his reflexes better as his hands catch and support him immediately.
"Are you scared, Haru?" she asks as she looks up at Tadashi and his son. The boy nods as tears start forming on his cheeks.
"Why'd you look at it then?"
"I only wanted to see it from afar!!" he sniffles and Tadashi gets his handkerchief out to make his son blow on his nose. "I wasn't scared at first, but you picked it up and it got close to me." She tilts her head and Kei sighs.
"Put it back, sweetheart."
He says rather sternly and she mumbles a small okay before going to the bushes, settling it down. She goes back to them and Kei gently gets her hand to wipe it with the hand wipes. She looks sad and Kei is quick to reassure her as he kneels in front of her.
"I'm not mad, okay?" he starts, "Bugs are cool, I know. Your dad works at the museum." He laughs softly before continuing as he wipes your daughter's hands, "But, sometimes you have to admire them from afar. Especially if it isn't needed to touch them, okay?"
She nods and her eyes light up, making Kei's chest feel lighter. He kisses her hands and then forehead when he was done. She walks up to Tadashi and pulls on his shirt, making him look at her.
"Haru, I'm sorry I scared you."
Tadashi puts his son down, as he crouches beside him, rubbing soothing circles on his back.
"I-it's okay," he hiccups, "Let's just play on the slide."
She smiles and Haru takes her hand, leading her to the slide. Kei stands and dusts off his pants, playing with the package of the hand wipes as he walks up to his best friend.
"I'm sorry about that."
Tadashi laughs and waves him off. "It's okay, really. Haru also needs to learn that bugs aren't that scary."
"He's kinda like you though."
Tadashi snaps his head and furrows his brows, making the blond laugh at his reaction.
"I'm not scared of bugs!" he defends.
"Oh, but you cried when a butterfly landed on you when we were 5."
"How do you remember that?" Yamaguchi asks, and Kei only shrugs at that.
They both look at their children, a genuine expression on both their faces as they watch Haru and your daughter sit on the slide, laughing and talking about things kids like. Yamaguchi sighs and hums in agreement. Kei looks at Tadashi and pats his back, making the grayish-green-haired man look at him confused and startled. Tsukishima gives a small smile before walking toward one of the benches.
"C'mon, let's catch up. It's been a while."
Tsukishima listens to Yamaguchi, as he sips on the coffee he bought from the vending machine, always making sure he has his eyes on his daughter every now and then.
"Yeah, it's crazy. Customers at the electronic store can be karens, and it's draining."
Kei laughs softly and shakes his head, "Jeez, good thing I haven't met anyone like that in the museum."
"You would've kicked them out."
"I would've made them into a museum statue."
Yamaguchi gasps and nudges Kei with his arm, laughing about how extreme he is if he encounters someone like that. They calm down and Haru comes up to them, your daughter following suit. But, before Haru can say something, someone interrupts.
"What's this?"
"Oh? What is this, bro. What's this?"
Kei closes his eyes and sighs deeply.
He'd know those voices from anywhere.
He hears Yamaguchi greeting the newcomers as soft snickers come out of him.
"Kuroo... Bokuto."
Kei says nonchalantly as he looks at them with uninterested eyes. There's a shit-eating grin on Kuroo's face as his chest is proudly puffed up. Bokuto has his hands on his hips, while the baby is his carrier just sucks on his pacifier. Kuroo gasps at his former student's expression and complains.
"Oi, why are you not happy to see your very great mentor?!"
"Because you're lame Uncle Kuroo."
A girl, probably two years older than Haru and your daughter comes up from behind Bokuto, as she makes her way to sit in the middle of Kei and Tadashi. Kuroo chokes dramatically and points at Bokuto's daughter.
"HAH?" he shouts, "You brat I bought you your Nintendo switch!!"
He crosses his arms and huffs when she ignores Kuroo, showing the new game she got to Tsukishima. He mumbles with a pout on his lips, "Seriously, she's like Kenma and she isn't even his daughter." Bokuto laughs before patting his back sympathetically, "That's okay. Believe me, she loves you and she's thankful." Kuroo rolls his eyes before he makes his way to sit on one of the playground equipment, rocking it back and forth.
"So, you got married, huh?" Kuroo inquiries with a gleam in his eyes and Tsukishima nods before looking at his daughter, who's asking for a sip of what he's drinking.
"Sorry, sweetheart you can't have this," he bargains and your daughter pouts.
"But, why?"
"Because this is coffee. You're still too young, and this is bad for you."
Kei says in the softest and the most gentle voice, it actually surprises Kuroo at how much one changes just because he's a father and married. She sighs before frowning, making Tsukishima guilty. Kei pats her head before excusing himself, Kuroo waving him off that it's okay, and turns his attention to Yamaguchi and Bokuto's family, listening very intently to Haru, who's talking about an earlier incident with the bug. Kei takes your daughter's hand, walking toward the vending machine. He picks her up, huffing an up we go before he carries her in one arm.
"You can have anything you want here," Kei starts and your daughter's eyes gleam, and this does not go unnoticed by the blond. "But," he pauses, "You can not have the coffee." Your daughter pouts and Kei smiles softly before he looks at the choices and found the closest thing to coffee he can buy, without the caffeine.
"Okay, how 'bout we get this?" He points at one of the drinks and your daughter looks skeptical, but she's considering it.
Just one more push.
"This is like coffee, but without all the bad stuff."
"Chocolate hazelnut?"
Kei hums and looks at your daughter, "Yup. Chocolate hazelnut." She purses her lips and Kei smiles at the mannerism as it reminds him of you. You'd always purse your lips when you're making a decision, and it seems that your daughter picked it up. Your daughter tilts her head, before saying a small okay. He fishes out coins from his pockets before inserting them in the vending machine, clicking the button for chocolate hazelnut. He crouches down as he gets the drink from the machine, walking back to where Tadashi and the others were. He sits down on the bench and places your daughter on one of his thighs, making her sit sideways. She waits patiently as Kei opens the drink before he hands it to her. She takes a sip as Kei slips his arms around her waist, clasping his hands together to prevent her from falling. She smiles and looks up at him, Kei tilts his head and raises his brows as he grins at her.
"How is it?" he asks and his daughter does a little dance, "It's really good." He smiles before kissing her softly in the head. He turns his attention back to the group.
"How 'bout you, Kuroo? Are you married?" Tsukishima asks, genuinely curious about his life. Kuroo shakes his head and waves his hand in dismissal to his question.
"Oh no, I'm not," he laughs before rubbing the back of his neck. "The JVA is really a lot of work so I haven't gotten around to dating anyone." Kei nods slowly, letting out a small oh.
"But it's alright. I'm not really in a rush to get married."
Kei hums and looks at his daughter, who's enjoying her drink. Kuroo smiles at Kei as he observes how gentle he is, his delicate fingers wiping your daughter's mouth because she's a messy drinker, and how he wipes the sweat off her forehead with his handkerchief. It's honestly such a heartwarming sight, the usually sarcastic, mean, and rude Kei is so gentle and close with his daughter, and you can feel the love he has for her just overflowing.
It's like two different people.
Kei catches up with the others as he watches his daughter get off and run up to Haru, to make him taste the drink━
"I heard Sugawara adopted," Tadashi says and everyone in the group let out a sound of shock, except Kuroo.
"It's not surprising?" he states unsure, "I mean he is a teacher, pretty sure he'd like to have a kid of his own." They all hum knowing Sugawara probably doesn't want to get married, but still wanted kids━
"Have you heard from Daishou?" Kuroo asks and Bokuto nods. "Yup, he got married. This baby is actually his."
Kuroo gasps and puts a hand on his chest, the other pointing toward the innocent baby. "You mean to say that isn't yours?!" he says dramatically making Bokuto laugh.
"Yup!"
"And you didn't tell me?!"
"Bro, I thought you knew. He literally looks like Daishou."
"I- No- Why are you babysitting his child??" Kuroo asks, very taken aback by the news Bokuto just dropped on him. Bokuto shrugs and casually says.
"I like taking care of kids."
Kuroo scoffs, "Tch, can't believe that's Daish- BRO I BOUGHT HIM THAT FREAKING CARRIER SO YOU WOULDN'T HAVE TO CARRY HIM AROUND TODAY!!"
"And that's on being dumb," Bokuto's daughter retorts making Kuroo shout, "Oi! You go play with Ha- DID SHE KNOW?!" he asks looking at Bokuto with a very confused and pissed off face.
"I did, hello? Like dad said, he really looks like Daishou."
He hangs his head low, before sighing deeply. They all laugh at Kuroo's misery because he just spent a lot of money on his rival's son. He isn't mad at the kid, of course. It's more of the fact that he bought his great enemy something, and the last thing he wanted to do was buy Daishou an expensive baby carrier to use.
"Bye Mr. Kuroo!!" your daughter shouts as she waves to them, "Bye Mr. Bokuto!!" Kuroo's heart swells as he waves back, one hand in his pocket while walking backward.
"Bye Tsuki's little version!!"
There's a big smile on his face as he waves goodbye, and if it weren't for Bokuto warning him, he would've tripped on the ledge. He turns around before running up to put his hand on the back of Bokuto's daughter, probably saying something about how he'll buy her a new game. Tsukishima picks your daughter up before turning to Tadashi, who's also carrying Haru in his arms, who's fast asleep. They bid goodbye to each other and Kei walks back to the car.
"Did you have fun?" he asks.
"Mhm!! Mr. Kuroo and Mr. Bokuto are really nice."
He's glad she likes them because it means a lot to him that your daughter likes his friends. It just goes to show that Bokuto and Kuroo are good people he can trust.
"That so?"
Kei smiles, a handsome and very wide smile as he looks at his daughter. Your daughter giggles before replying, "Yup! Mr. Kuroo also said he'll buy me anything I want. I just have to tell him." He shakes his head before laughing softly. They reach the car and he opens the door of the passenger side, making her sit on the baby car seat that's on the passenger's chair, securing her very well with the seatbelts. He closes the door before making his way to the driver's seat. He starts the car, checking the time on his watch before looking at his daughter.
"About that, why don't we get you your new shoes?"
Your daughter's eyes sparkles and Kei smiles, the one where he shows his teeth and it's honestly so attractive.
"I promised, right?"
She nods quickly and puts her hands up in the air, celebrating. This makes Kei laugh before he changes the car from park to drive mode.
"Alright let's go," he says cheerfully as he starts to drive the car.
"Let's go!!!" She repeats with much more energy and Kei's heart swells up.
You won't be home in another hour or so, and you can't really do anything about it if he buys her new shoes because Kei loves his daughter and he will spoil her as much as he wants.

I feel so left out. I don’t know why, but I feel as though people don’t actually like me. So I slowly distance myself from people and eventually I have no friends.
