Heard from a little birdie (@ladyothelakes) that it's Xena's 30th anniversary... so I had to make a little something for the girls
Xena is my favorite show, and I earnestly believe that we need a hero like Xena now more than ever before.
So… I wrote a Xena movie. It picks up 20ish years after the series ended and feeds directly into a reboot show. I wrote the script around what Lucy, Renee, and Rob have stated they would want in order to come back: less action for Lucy, fun with old castmates, and passing the torch to the next generation. I have a pilot written for a reboot as well that picks up directly where this film ends.
This film respects the canon of the series and puts Xena’s head back on her body, which is what the fans deserve.
But more importantly, I didn’t just write a Xena movie. My film has been selected for the Stunt List.
This means my Xena film will be seen by executives, agents, and producers because it was one of a few scripts chosen this year by working professionals to be hosted.
This also means you can read my movie!
By sharing, viewing, and reading my script via the Stunt List, we can prove that there is a place for a Xena revival in the current market. With Buffy getting revived and the success of Freakier Friday, there is a legitimate chance that if we get this script attention, Xena will return (especially with all of Rob Tapert's comments as of late).
It would be totally rad if my film were made, but this is bigger than me. We need Xena. This new generation needs Xena.
Please check out my script. And if you like it, post about it #XenaMovie.
I’m also happy to chat more if anyone has any questions or if you want to discuss the film in more detail :)
If you’ve read this far, here’s some more information about who I am.
I have an MFA in Dramatic Writing from SCAD.
The show is older than I am.
I have placed in various screenwriting competitions, including PAGE, Final Draft, and Cinequest. My scripts have also received 8s and 9s on the Black List (a site where industry professionals review scripts).
My top 3 episodes: One Against an Army, The Price, Here She Comes… Miss Amphipolis
My first dog was named Xena. My new puppy is named Callisto.
I am currently an English professor.
I have won various awards for filmmaking and directing. I was actually nominated for a Southeast Student Emmy while at SCAD. You can see more of my stuff here.
I attended Xena Con with my sister in 2022.
Gabrielle fights to maintain both her identity and Xena's soul as an old enemy returns, paving the way for Xena's resurrection and
I read your script. It’s good. But I have a question. How do you plan to execute this script if it does get picked up? There’s a lot in this script that simply just cannot be done unless the characters are recasted. Even if it’s a revival and transitions and evolves into a new show, Lucy and Renee would not be able to be the faces of Xena and Gabrielle to pass the torch to the new Xena.
It’s a very good story and premise into a new timeline.
But I do not see how this can be realistically executed…
Unless we give up on the notion of Lucy and Renee reprising their roles as the original Xena and Gabrielle.
And I don’t think any veteran fan is willing to do that.
But we can’t expect Lucy and Rene to commit to a script like this. It would be far too much for them.
Some things are better left alone. I think Xena is one of them. Even if the majority of fanbase hate the ending.
I do think it would be trickier now, but if the main concern is stunts and the physicality of it - you would be shocked what they can do with a double and technology now, such as literally placing the actor's face onto the double's body. That said, this is more of a conversation piece to at least get them thinking more about an actual revival and then discussions could go from there about what is actually possible for them personally to do.
I do think it's inevitable in this period of reboots that Xena is eventually redone in some way, so I would love to give the OGs a proper send-off to pass the torch before just launching into something new.
Understandable but I’m not sure that’s the way to go. Overly-done computer graphics and what not. Plus it would require the budget for all of that to be done to it.
If it’s just a talking piece for what can be possible, then that’s fair enough but I’m pretty sure Lucy and Renee won’t go for it either way because it’s still too much. It’s not just about the stunts and physicality. There’s also the romance factor… and how all the other characters can fit into it because I believe Lucy and Renee have said that it’s all of them brought back or nothing at all.
If it was an animation…That might be a different story altogether and the leads will happily reunite to do that.
But a live-action - even with all the insane things they can do these days - I just don’t think it’s the way to go.
I like the idea of a revival and passing the torch to a new generation. … but it’s executing it that’s the problem.
Have you submitted your script to Rob Tapert?
See what he thinks.
The Stunt List will be pushing the scripts to executives, so hopefully Rob will be able to get eyes on it. Animation is definitely not a bad idea, though animation can be very expensive as well. We'll see what happens.
I mainly just hope if they continue Xena they do so with the fans in mind, which is why I wrote this script.

this will always be one of the funniest recurring things in the show for me. they really gave her the most booked and busy twelve months anyone has ever had in all of human history

funniest title drop ever
Xena really is the best show. Nowhere in the history of television can you experience an episode filled with the complexities of a character dealing with the overwhelming grief of losing her lover and sacrificing a chance to find closure in order to help those she hurt in the past... while also witnessing a bunch of people doing drugs, an intensely filmed staring contest, and a poorly done job of a woman's head photoshopped onto a spider's body. Perfection
Callisto: I’m gonna kill you!
Xena: Oh really? How original. I’ve died so many times my gravestone says BRB instead of RIP on it.
It’s so romantic, isn’t it? - Very.
