Gabrielle did have a serious case of hero worship. And I imagine she had to spend a lot of time trying to figure out what her feelings actually were.

I seriously doubt that she would’ve married Perdicus if she was completely sure what she was feeling. She spent more time thinking/worrying about Xena than she did the man she just married. And Perdicus did play into her need to be needed. That talk about how he would’ve killed himself if not for Gabrielle was manipulative. 

Xena, however, knew what she was feeling. But with her guilt, she tried to keep it in check. That moment in Is There a Doctor in the House is literally Xena’s emotions taking over. Which was kinda confirmed by T.J. Scott, who directed the episode:
