âThatâs a wrap everybody!â Emma calls out. I look at my watch, 9:00 pm. By the time I get home it will be close to 10 and I can definitely go to bed without being too strange. Perfect! I grin to myself.
âEarth to Ali!â Jennifer waves her hand in front of me.
âWeâre going out for drinks, wanna come?â
Well this is embarrassing⌠âJen⌠I canât get into clubs⌠Iâm only 19.â I feel the heat rising in my cheeks.
âI completely forgot!â she laughs. She throws her arm around my shoulders. Fangirling, no itâs just Jennifer, your coworker. But itâs still Jennifer Lawrence. No, I must pull myself together, this is just Jen. âWhy donât we have a night in at my place?â she asks.
I look at Dylan he smiles at me. âIt would be fun, Ali,â he says.
How can I say no to him? âAs long as youâre all up for losing charades.â They laugh. Jen waves at Emma to come. I like Emma, Iâm not sure what it is about her, but she makes me feel very comfortable.
The four of us head to get out of our costumes. As weâre walking, Dylan throws his arm around me. Dear lord donât start hyperventilating. âCharades master, huh,â he says, very casually.
I giggle Oh god, why did I giggle? âWell, I donât know about masterâŚâ
âEven if you arenât a master, Iâm pretty good myself. Maybe we could be a team?â He looks down at me; a crooked smile rests on his face.
âLezz do it!â I say. He laughs. Of course he laughs I said lezz do it. Why can I never act normal?! When we reach wardrobe, Dylan ducks away to get his clothes. I sigh and walk over to the rack I left my clothes on and search for my jeans and plaid shirt. I find and put them on and walk out to Emma and Jen.
âNo,â Jen states, running her eyes over me.
I look down at myself. âWhat?â
âYou have a rockinâ bod and youâre going to flaunt it. Besides, Dylan likes a girl whoâs got it going on.â
I feel the heat rise in my cheeks again. âI-I donât-â
âCut the act, Ali,â Emma interrupts. âNow, weâre going to find you something to wear.â I sigh but follow them back inside to wardrobe.
âYou realize Dylan is probably waiting for us?â
"We donât care,â stated Emma, flipping through the clothes racks.
âWell I do. And besides, he doesnât care what I wear. We arenât even going out anywhere! Weâre staying in.â I try to reason with them.
âYouâre not wearing a manâs shirt, Ali.â
âFine!â I groan. I give in and just let them dress me. I try on shirt after shirt. Still nothing is up to their standards. âCan we just-â
Dylanâs voice interrupts me as it echoes down the hall. âHow long does it take to change?â
âWeâll be right there!â I reply. I look down at myself. Iâm back in my plaid shirt.
Emma sighs, âI guess we have to let you wear your plaid man shirt.â Yes! Comfort wins yet again.Â
We walk out to see Dylan leaning against the wall. He is crossing his arms and I can see his biceps flex underneath his shirt. I freeze. Weâre wearing the same shirt. I am wearing the exact same shirt as Dylan. I am wearing a manâs shirt and he knows. Emma and Jen look at each other and start laughing. As usual, I feel the heat rise up in my cheeks. âHey, Dylan⌠Sorry it took so longâŚâ
He smiles at me, âWell Iâm glad weâll be matching at least, since weâre partners.â
He doesnât embarrass me. I laugh. âThatâs trueâŚâ I look over at Jen and Emma who are wiping tears from their eyes. âHow about we head out?â I ask.
âLezz do it!â Dylan replies. He sends a wink in my direction. Here I go, swooning again. Jen links her arm through mine and we head down the street. I canât help but sneak glances at Dylan. Itâs dark out but the streetlights cast his face into shadows. I hear my stomach growl.
âSorry to interrupt,â Emma stops talking and looks in my direction, âIâm kinda hungry so do you guys mind if we stop somewhere and eat?â
âI have a better idea!â Jen cries out. âWe are going to have a contest. And whichever team loses has to cook dinner⌠using only the ingredients in my house!â
Dylan and I glance at each other. âAnd what will this competition be?â
âWeâre going to have a wheelbarrow race. All the way to my house.â Jen and Emma smirk at each other. That canât be a good sign.
âWait, wait, wait. Neither Ali or I know the way to your house.â
Jen walks over to Dylan and places her arm around his shoulders. She points down the street. âSee that green mailbox?â He nods. âI live in the second apartment buildings down that street.â
Emma looks at me, âSo you ready?â
I look at Dylan and get on the ground. I place my hands shoulder width apart and I lift my feet. Dylan grabs hold of my ankle, just above my sock. His hands are very soft, and warm. No, I have to get my head in the race, I can think about Dylanâs hands later.
 âOkay. On your mark⌠get set⌠GO!â
The race is on. I donât like being on my hands, I keep getting little pebbles in my palms. But I donât complain, because we have to win. âYou good Ali?â Dylan calls down to me.
âYup!â The race continues. Itâs close, but Dylan and I are still winning. I see the green mailbox, but without warning Dylan turns me. I lose my grip and I twist over. Jen and Emma pull ahead. âQuick! Grab my feet we can catch up.â He grabs my ankles and the race continues. I donât think weâre going to win⌠I look up to see Jen and Emma turning. Weâve lost.
âWe won!â Their cheers and laughter reach us. Dylan stops and lets go of my ankles and I get up. He looks at me. His eyes glisten and he smirks.
âDidnât she say to the apartment?â I nod. âThey are just at the sidewalkâs edge.â I nod again. âWe can still win. Come one.â I drop to the ground again, as quickly as possible. My ankles fly up and we move. Iâm moving fast. I didnât know my hands could move this fast! I see Jen and Emma briefly as we fly past them.
âWhat are you guys doing? We already won!â
âYouâre not at the building yet!â He calls over his shoulder. I laugh. Victory is in our reach. I can see the doors, only a few more steps.
âYES!â We reach the doors. I get up and face Dylan. Weâre both grinning. For some reason, I go in for a chest bump. That hurt. Why would I do that? I grimace and start to turn away from him. He grabs my hand and pulls me in. âGood work, partner.â His lips rest gently on my cheek. He lingers there for a second. Iâm fighting the urge I have to turn my head. He pulls away. He smiles. Here we go again.
