I had a roommate who is as white as I am (which is to say, very) who would take the time and care to pronounce Mexican foods as if saying the word in Spanish (rather than Americanized English) the way a lot of native Spanish speakers might who live in Southern California. Then she made fun of me for pronouncing croissant the way I have my whole life, the way my mother taught me it was pronounced in French (even though we’re a fair few generations in to being American and my mother has only been to France once on a school trip) because I sounded pretentious. She would mock me whenever I said it by imitating Carl Wheezer. I never noticed the hypocrisy while we lived together.

And by roommate I mean we had been friends for over half our lives but now we haven’t been friends for five years and the longer she’s not in my life the more I realize she wasn’t a very good friend, actually. It’s hard having so many good memories tainted by that truth. I used to laugh with her. I used to mock myself.
