First off, it wasn't remotely "out of the blue." It was very clearly incited by the guy filming deliberately provoking people, and the guy who punched him gave an extremely clear verbal warning of what he was going to do before he did it.
Second, this isn't about differing opinions, this is about human rights and safety. Getting along with people who have different opinions is for stuff like whether dogs are better than cats or whether a song is good; things that you can disagree on without people coming to harm. ICE is not like that. They are kidnapping and abusing people. They are violating rights, making the country less safe for everyone, and are being used as a tool to instill fear in everyone who disagrees with the fascists in power.
More relevant to this video, ICE raids have been creeping closer to schools, including following school buses and occupying school parking lots. And ICE has taken children, so these teens definitely aren't exempt. Once in ICE's custody, people of all ages face horrible conditions and treatment. Going around a school (which these teens are in all likelihood required to attend) saying "I support ICE" is more like saying "I would let a man with a gun into your house" than "I disagree with your opinion."
It's not punching someone that makes this guy a legend. It's the fact that he didn't let a threat of punishment get in the way of standing up to fascism, and the fact that he followed through on his words.
