𝐀𝐋𝐀𝐒,  𝐇𝐄𝐑  𝐎𝐖𝐍  𝐒𝐔𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘:  it  disturbed  her  prideful  stride  all  too  quickly,  weaving  a  traitorous  note  of  compliance  into  her  solitary  push  forward.  Whether  his  words  were  truly  formulated  with  complimentary  intent  mattered  little  to  someone  so  wholly  devoted  to  the  delusional  whims  of  her  own  self-indulgence;  someone  who  clung  to  every  ounce  of  praise  with  the  persistence  of  a  parasitic  species,  ever  eager  to  bask  in  the  made-up  rays  of  a  spotlight  she  demanded  rather  than  deserved. 

❝   Mmm.   ❞  The  first  indication  of  her  reluctant  appeasement  came  in  the  form  of  a  hum;  a  half-muffled  sound  that  faded  before  it  could  fully  take  shape.  What  followed  was  a  subtle  falter  in  her  steps,  the  sharp  rhythm  of  her  heels  slowing  alongside  her  pace     —     granting  him,  benevolent  as  she  was,  the  privilege  of  catching  up  inch  by  tantalizing  inch. 

Stripped  of  reservations  and  doubts  alike,  her  resolve  bared  its  traitorous  countenance  the  moment  she  slowed  enough  to  meet  his  gaze,  revealing  her  expression  as  one  of  burgeoning  infatuation     —     a  glimpse  of  subdued  warmth  buried  deep  beneath  the  fissure  cracks  of  her  usual  frost. 

❝   I  suppose,   ❞  she  mused,  voice  lilting  through  painted  lips,  ❝   it  wouldn’t  hurt  to  have  you  take  a  look  at  it.   ❞  

A  beat     —     then,  because  she  could  never  allow  him  the  satisfaction  of  an  unchallenged  victory:  ❝   No  sitting,  though.  I  can  stand  just  fine.   ❞  

Still,  trading  barbs  with  her  isn't  his  angle  as  much  as  he  enjoys  them.  Making  sure  her  innards  don't  become  'outtards'  —  that's  the  issue,  he  reminds  himself.  Her  all-too-discreet  change  in  gait  gives  him  a  newfound  chance  to  observe  and  understand.  His  worries  might  just  have  been  a  touch  exaggerated  —  but  could  you  blame  him?  She's  the  type  to  grit  her  teeth  with  a  hole  through  her  head  rather  than  make  even  a  peep.  Can't  complain  too  much,  though.  Under  the  right  circumstances,  she  might've  found  a  box  to  hide  in  before  he  got  this  close.

Oh,  loving  her  might  just  be  more  taxing  than  slaying  any  monster  or  beast.

❝  Didn't  doubt  that  for  a  second.  ❞  Surely  the  thought  of  lowering  herself  to  something  as  WEAK  as  sitting  for  a  couple  of  minutes  would've  been  beneath  her.  Surely.  ❝  Guess  you'll  just  be  abusing  my  poor,  frail  legs  instead.  Brutal.  ❞
